YES!!! Dark Cloud 2 was one of the very first games I ever got for the PS2 and it’s probably the best 20 bucks I ever spent. The combat is so satisfying (I always loved that you leveled up your weapon, not your own skill), there’s tons to do, and the town building is always one of my favorite parts. Plus when you unlock Spheda you can absolutely clean up in certain worlds (farming huge rewards in the last chapter of the game or so after you’re done dungeon crawling by playing golf? yes please). And the cast of characters are all so cute and charming. My favorite PS2 title for sure.

I think my favorite childhood memory of playing Resident Evil 4 was when I left the game paused to get a drink, and then while I was in the kitchen, I heard a chainsaw and returned to find my head had been lopped off. One of my kittens had jumped on the controller and unpaused the game while they were playing with each other, and they were both looking at me all guilty when I saw what they did. Also, if you like RE4, I recommend also checking out Cold Fear, which is personally one of my favorite PS2 games. It's a horror game similar to RE4 that came out just a few months after it, and most people sat on it because RE4 overshadowed it. Other games not on the list that I love are Silent Hill 3, The Suffering, Extermination, and Obscure. (You can probably tell that when it comes to video games, especially around the PS1/PS2 era, I definitely had a genre type.)

Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is a timeless classic. I still prefer it over Jak 2 (never played Jak 3) because I much prefer the platform and collecting gameplay over the shooting gameplay that it turned into. Plus there's so many varied environments for a PS2 game, it's basically like a preteen's version of Super Mario 64, especially with all the movement tech they implemented. One of the first video games I ever played. I'm craving more games like it to return.

That's part of why Sonic Boom was especially painful to me, as a Jak fan. If you really pay attention to the landscapes, level design, story setting, and even the way the characters move... I'd bet money that it was supposed to be Jak 4. Instead it got converted to a Sonic game, was mangled in development heck, and sunk the company. I wish someone would at least re-master the original 3 games. :(

The man just makes great lists. Odin Sphere mentioned. The remake is worth checking out. It fixes several issues with the original and makes for a faster experience. Vanillaware games in general are something you should get into. Muramasa: The Demon Blade is the closest you can get to the Odin Sphere experience, though. Most of their games play nothing alike. My favorite PS2 game is Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8, which recently got a pretty good remake! The R3K series are historical strategy games based on the classical Chinese novel of the same name, from which the Dynasty Warriors franchise was spun-off. R3K7 introduced the ability to play as an individual officer adding life-sim style activities. It's basically a blend of life-sim and historical wargame similar to how the Persona franchise is a blend of life-sim and jrpg. R3K8 refined the life-sim elements considerably while adding some nice quality-of-life improvements to the tactical combat, city building, and the way the game handled historic (and ahistoric) events. It even had hotseat multi-player!

So glad to see Ico and SotC in the list as I hold them to be two of the greatest (at the very least two of the most interesting and compelling, to me) games ever made

Every PS2 list with Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Katamary, and a musou game is objectively correct. My complementary tiles to those four are: SSX Tricky: best snowboarding arcade racer ever Kuri Kuri Mix: fun and crazy 2 player co-op Micro Machines v4: 4p party racer greatness Silent Hill 2: needs no introduction Soul Calibur III: the rpg-ish campaign was both campy and great fun. Great multiplayer too Zone of the Enders: Kojima space mechas

I'd forgotten all about SSX Tricky. Played that all the time at a friend's house!

Solid list full of bangers! My favorite forgotten gems are: * Dark Cloud 2 (whose protagonist shows up in Astro Bot! Yay Maximillian!!), which is packed with genuinely fun mechanics including time travel and golf * Kuon, an early FromSoft release that’s a phenomenal short horror game * Chu❤Lip, wherein you are on a journey to kiss the girl you love… and have to level up by kissing everyone else in town first

I am glad that this is really YOUR list. Sometimes it seems like everyone has the exact same taste and always cherish the list that is "popular".

If any game should be held up as proving "games are art", it's Shadow of the Colossus. What a masterpiece. On a similar note, Prince of Persia : Sands of Time was incredible and deserves a spot on any top 10 PS2 games, and the trilogy as a whole, despite some major missteps, was excellent.

ICOOO YESSS!! Ico was one the first ps2 games ive played when i was little. It is arguably one of the best games out there to date, the minimalist philosophy, mystery, and impactful setting and scenes are amazing. It is genuinely a game I believe to be beautiful, and deserves so much love and care.

It's baffling just how insanely vast the number of absolute classics is in the PS2 library. Ratchet and Clank 2 was my childhood but there's so many others that i absolutely adore. The Lord of the Rings movie tie in games, Revenge of the Sith with a whole ass multiplayer dueling mode, Battlefront 2, Jak and Daxter, Devil May Cry, SSX, there was even a James Bond game with an all star cast which was pretty much just a full Bond movie but in ps2 format (with Willem Dafoe as the bad guy no less) God i miss that generation.

I can understand the struggle of picking a ps2 game. There were so many greats. Final fantasy came out with so many bangers, rock band was cooking, the battle front games were amazing, and you had so many movie licensed games. Truly, it was a magical time to be alive.

Kagero: Deception II for the PS1 was a great game. Essentially, you play as a Princess who can't fight directly, but you set up traps around the mansion to 'neutralize' the threats that appear. It felt pretty unique when I played it. There are apparently 5 games in the series - I tried 'Trapt' on PS2 which is in the same series of games (called the 'Deception' series) but something about the PS1 game was more appealing to me. Regarding the traps, I found this fun description on Wikipedia: "traps [are] able to interact with one another in long strings that could be likened to Rube Goldberg set-ups, just much more lethal and involving other people" - it's honestly really satisfying to have a trapped-wall spring out and yeet an enemy down a staircase and into a bear trap before dropping a giant boulder onto the staircase which rolls down and crushes them before they can escape the bear trap. You're basically Macaulay Culkin if he was a cute anime girl who made a pact with a demon for trap-setting powers.

'The Mark of Kri' and it's sequel, 'Rise of the Kasai', are the two games that I usually recommend for those who want to explore the PS2's library of software specifically for games that might've flown under their radar during the system's hey-day. The development staff consisted mostly of former 2D Animators that had worked at the major animation studios during the 1990's and early 2000's. The lead art director specifically wanted to create a video game set in the Fantasy genre where the game was somewhat grounded in some form of reality, but believable in the sense that it could have happened. Both games were heavily influenced by various Polynesian culture and art and is set in a Maori Low Fantasy setting, while it's visual presentation and design sensibilities looks like a long-lost Disney 90's-era Renaissance film, with the graphic violence being cranked up to 11. And on the gameplay side of things, the game utilized the DualShock 2's analog sticks, where the left is used for movement and the right for locking on to surrounding enemies. The combat mechanics are much more dexterous, where you have to plan your strategy by scouting ahead and correctly anticipating which weapon in Rau's arsenal (from Sword, Taiaha, Axe, Bow and Arrow, and unarmed stealth) is best suited for the next scenario as his bird Kuzo flies ahead to scout the area. And combat (with everything associated with combat) would be the games focus, with scouting out a location and planning accordingly is where players in search of exploration will get their kicks. Both games are on the PSN, and had received a nice section of upgrades as they made their way to the PS4. They're worth checking out if you have either a PS4 or PS5.

DW5 is great. It's my favourite DW game too. The whole aspect of playing different characters, the whole levelling up system and the different ways you can attack your opponent and especially the musou rage that the previous games didn't have makes this game incredibly fun to play.

Great list and respect for DW, sometimes a good old one man army lawnmowing game hits the exact spot other games can't. Personal lists are so much better than "THE 10 BEST GAMES EVAH"

This is a super solid list. Every game on it is one I either played myself or knew about and I get the nostalgia and love of each of them. You should check out Ratchet:Deadlocked if you never played that one. It's the last ratchet and clank game they released before switching to PS3, and it had a much bigger focus on the weapons and the combat than any previous game. The platforming sections are still there, but they're further apart and fewer between. But the weapons they had for that game and the weapon upgrade system was perfected. The team knew what worked well and just dialled everything up to 11. I'd love to see you play it on ProZD Plays Games.

I still play on the PS2. The latest game I've been playing was The Sims Bustin' Out. I also tend to play Jurassic Park Operation Genesis, The Urbz, Dynasty Warriors 4, The Simpsons Road Rage. There's just something about the PS2 that makes me keep coming back.
