Fans have long been divided on which version of RuneScape is better, and as a long time player of RuneScape myself, I also have an opinion. I personally (somewhat controversially) prefer RS3 even though I enjoy and play both games. Hear me out and find out my personal reasons for preferring RuneScape 3.

@@marcusisahooper That will never happen either. People, especially gamers with their weak egos will never truly like someone who disagrees with their video game related opinion. I only bring this up as you put such an emphasis on it in this video, if you were said "Here's my opinion, take it how you will" you try extremely hard to appease. You don't have to do that man, just be yourself and people will gravitate towards a genuine person.

I'm a maxed rs3 main of like 18 years and started on OS when GIM came out with friends and the toolbelt really is the biggest small thing. Doing Tempoross is honestly a great show of difference, specifically the way it just deletes items from your inventory(ropes/buckets, even though you can get more from the boat), something that RS3 would never even consider these days even in the hardest of endgame content. It ultimately boils down to OS purists wanting the game to be the same(a very slow slog), which is why I'm surprised there's even polls going on about new skills considering how badly warding got shot down. Ultimately they are just different games at this point and people should just stop trying to compare them. Also by far the biggest negative in RS3 right now is the economy.

i was osrs guy for soo long, decided to give rs3 a try and got hooked :D 2b xp on main right now and just created an ironman. rs3 has stuff that i dont really like (dungeoneering for example) but i love basicly everything else about the game. a lot of osrs players talk about microtransaction and treasure hunter but i dont think thats a big deal anymore, yeah its cash grab but they need to make money to give us new content, its not like people are still rushing for highscores and microtransactions would effect that in any way considering none of them work on newly released skills for a while and tbh i kinda liked getting lamps from treasure hunter so i could skip parts of the game i hated and thats why the only way i trained dungeoneering on my main was with lamps :D

Great editting on the vids too! Keep it up and you'll get a golden gnome. Ok the last point was a lil off but I do agree that everything does take more time to do in OSRS with all of its inconveniences. The PvM Hub (War's Retreat) in RS3 for example, makes it really easy to boss without caring about teleports and the like. Imagine just teleporting to Vorkath instead of figuring out whether you want to grind to an Elite Fremmenik Diary to teleport, or use a player owned house teleport (or a fairy ring if you don't have both).

my friend that never played osrs as a kid and has only been playing 1 month could beat the potato time in rs3 on osrs, kinda bad comparison. I concede that you need to invest less time in rs3 to move across the map but things such as teleport tabs/POH/fairy ring network are very comparable, and there is something to be said about feeling good about progression and unlocking these things. I would vote yes to the tool belt coming into OSRS. I would be interested in seeing an end game bossing combat comparison, as both games have dogshit simply combat outside of that, and I have little knowledge on bossing in rs3

I 100% agree, I think if more osrs players gave rs3 an actual fighting chance they'd like the game a lot more too. Rs3 just developed a negative and mostly undeserving stereotype. The average osrs player can't name 1 ability in rs3 and doesn't know anything about the game, they just played it for 20 minutes like 8 years ago and assumed it sucks cuz 2 of their friends said it did, and then quickly gave up. Modern mmo's are complex and take a while to get the perfect interface and ability rotations. You just gotta treat rs3 like that and it will pay off. Amazing game with tons of unique content and quests. I play both but rs3 takes the cake. Also it's super ironic that OSRS players don't want a lodestone network, but they have like 30 minigame teleports, they don't want toolbelts & faster paced gameplay, but they have hundreds of runelite plugins, and they don't want EOC but legacy mode & revolution is still a thing to this day. I have the quest cape on both versions of the game, and it blows my mind that instead of the ability to rest, have musicians, etc. OSRS players would literally rather buy a bunch of stamina potions for no reason. I wish I could "rest" on osrs so badly.

I think the "jumping in" comparison isn't completely fair (you know where to buy seeds in RS3 and already had some, etc.), but the toolbelt thing does seem like a really nice QoL feature. I always have my tool leprechaun stocked though, so farm runs are usually pretty quick to jump into for me. I also always have teleport runes ready to go. I feel like if we raced, you'd still win in RS3, but the difference wouldn't be as drastic as in the video. No hate though, lol, I generally don't play OSRS unless I'm ready to commit an hour or two. I totally get where you're coming from. I don't know if I'll ever make the switch to RS3, but I enjoyed the video regardless.

I like both for different reasons and at the end of the day we are all adults. I believe each side could really learn from the other and comparing which is better is counter-productive. As an OSRS only player, I always say that RS3 isn't a bad game at all, it's just a DIFFERENT game. It isn't the game I grew up with as a kid, and it no longer has that brutal grind that I oh so crave anymore. And frankly, that's totally okay. Cause I'm fully aware that not everyone share's that same interest. I'm just glad the RS3 hate in the Old School community has died down...at least a little. I've seen plenty of Old School content creators try out RS3 now, and they were surprised with how much they enjoyed it. Some even switched to playing RS3 primarily for a while. I wish I could get into RS3 again, cause believe me I tried, but I love the brutal grind and lack of QoL. Hell, I play a gosh darn UIM, which is already masochistic in and of itself. Also, I really hate minigames, so another big reason why I couldn't get into RS3. Even the few that Old School has I'm not a fan of. Oh, and I have ADHD too, so don't just blame only that for your lack of interest with waiting for things XD. Most of the quests I'd have to do took 10x as long cause I was forced to walk everywhere, but I lowkey loved it. Impatience and ADHD tend to go hand in hand, but they can be mutually exclusive too.

Enjoyed the video :) I am osrs ride or die, but it is nice seeing people's perspective from the other game :p From the looks of it OSRS has a steaper learning curve perhaps, or just required a bigger time commitment to get your account up and running. The farm run in osrs could have been optimized to be far faster than that, and honestly I don't know anything about rs3 so I would assume I too would struggle doing a farm run in a game that I don't know too well. I do prefer games that reward time investment. I would play rs4 if that was ever a thing (and if it was not pay to win), but I doubt I will ever play rs3 since I am already so happy with osrs.

Great video, but I have mixed feelings on your points. I played RS2 as a kid, and then got back into RS3 in 2015 and played until maybe 2021ish and nearly maxed (was just a few levels in arch and some combat skills off max cape), but then switched over to osrs. I don't disagree with the stuff you're saying, but I think I feel inversely about them. Like, with the toolbelt, you have all your tools, but I felt compelled by the exp efficiency powercreep that when I skill I need to be using my augmented pickaxe and accumulators and urns and incense and a familiar and blah blah blah there's so many MORE things you need to stack on top of just your tool that you don't in osrs. With lodestones, I would end up relying on them constantly rather than just teleporting around with spells. That sometimes made things take way longer as a result since the animation was so much longer (quick teles were way too expensive for me to justify) and I had to run further, and I definitely enjoyed the feeling of progression of unlocking transport methods in osrs. I get that that's contradictory to what I said about feeling compelled into efficiency, but it just ended up being how I played and it wasn't satisfying. The variety of training methods is good too, though I do like the simplicity of osrs and having my options limited some in a choice paralysis type way. When I logged into rs3 there was simply so much to do, whereas in osrs I have a lot easier time picking something out. Mining and smithing rework were great, wouldn't change anything about them, same with the quests and variety of content. Those are definitely one ups that rs3 has over osrs. The graphics are wholly subjective so I get why you'd like them more. I've never been a huge fan of osrs's artstyle, but i do like how much more coherent and cohesive it is compared to rs3. Going from Karamja to Burthorpe to GWD2 is a shock, and I don't think they're good shocks. Rs3 just has been around so much longer that it doesn't feel like it has any concrete visual identity, and when you slap on the cosmetics and particlescape in so many peoples outfits its just blech to me. EOC I also feel totally mixed on. I do think RS3's combat system has significantly vast depth to it compared to osrs's, but I'm just really bad at it. I was always bad at it, and I never felt like I could be good at it. I could barely handle firing off defensives at boss mechanics and most pvm felt totally inaccessible to me, which is why I never ended up maxing. Gearing was a chore and I never felt like I was doing it right. In osrs, I'm still a ways off from most bossing, but when I look at people doing it, it actually feels like something I CAN do, which is nice. As others said, the "jump in" point was more of just an issue of game knowledge, which both games struggle from for new players just because they've got so much content in them. Overall though, it's all subjective. I'd like to go back to rs3 some time and max on one dxp or another since I was so close, but I dunno when I'll ever get around to it. What's important is that people play the one they find the most fun, and not just because they bought into tribalism or feel too great a sunk cost to quit.

I feel like the farming example was a little drastic for jumping in. You coulda just said "maybe I don't have tools stored, I should probably buy them at the GE while I'm still here" and cut down a lot on time, and on top of that, while seeds maybe aren't THAT common a drop in osrs, they're still fairly common/easy to get. Plus you already had them in your bank on RS3. Other than this point which I felt a little drastic/dishonest with the poor example used, this is definitely an interesting video. I prefer OSRS, but I don't hate RS3. The one thing that makes me try out/play RS3 from time to time is that membership is shared across the same character in RS3 and OSRS. If I had to pay separate membership for both, I wouldn't touch RS3 at all. That, and IM doesn't completely ruin the game with MTXs like mainscaping in 3 does.
@marcusisahooper
@marcusisahooper Жыл бұрын
My mistake was framing the farming experiment as a general experience and not just a personal one! Not everyone has the lack of OSRS knowledge I have, AND my confusion about this account already having tools did add more time to the experiment! That being said, the potato seeds in RS3 were a drop from trolls which are an enemy you’re pushed to fight right at the start of your account, the farming tutor is someone you’re introduced to in one of the early tutorials, loadstones are explained to all new players, and the tool belt allows me to farm without wondering if I have the tools or not! All of the information that could have made my OSRS time faster, the game itself didn’t tell me! So my point really was that, for me, RS3 is better for faster, more casual gameplay that doesn’t require the same level of outside research to do! But I wasn’t clear about that and framed the experiment as everyone’s experience which isn’t true!

In the future if you are going to do a "comparison" I would highly recommended doing the same thing in both games... either on fresh accounts or without using the bonuses you have unlocked through hours of gameplay on rs3. You used things you unlocked in rs3 but did not use the bonuses that could have been used in OSRS. Also, if you lack any game knowledge at all in one game... then using your vast game knowledge of another makes no sense. Its a completely lopsided comparison. also another place that your 0% game knowledge for osrs killed the comparison is Runelite. Runelite osrs is a hybrid of both games. It allows for tons of QOL features that RS3 doesnt even have, while not having the base game improvements that RS3 has made over the years. Runelite can also be launched directly for the osrs website. I agree with some of your points and can respect that overall that you enjoy playing one game over the other... but if you choose to do direct "comparisons" in future videos... either take the time to gain the game knowledge in osrs to make them actually comparable or simply state beforehand that you know absolutely 0% about that version of the game. seriously though.. you go to the bank but you dont teleport to varrock or the direct GE teleport? You know exactly where seeds are in RS3 but waste time looking it up in osrs. You cant take the time to learn simple shortcuts for the menus in osrs... or y'know, have the tools sitting in your bank like anyone would as you clearly werent starting fresh on either game... or not being extremely cheap and paying a few hundred coins for them in the GE. you use already unlocked lodestones in Rs3 but cannot spent 13k on a charged glory to teleport to the same spot in osrs. and saying oh i have potato seeds in my bank because they are such a common drop. Dude, they are just as common in osrs but barely anyone would pick them up because they are worth 1gp in osrs. meanwhile they are worth hundreds in rs3. it provides nothing to your comparison. overall, it started out as a solid idea and interesting to see an RS3 players point of view... but it fell off a cliff when you decided to make a completely biased and lopsided comparison for seemingly no reason.

It is definitely lopsided, and was meant to illustrate my personal frustrations with the game (as the whole video is from my perspective)! I made the mistake of framing the experiment poorly to make it seem like this would be a similar experience to everyone, and I wish I had done it differently! That being said, the experiment was purposely “no-prep” to simulate me casually logging in to farm! That meant not collecting tools beforehand in OS! Yes I already had my tools in RS3, but that was part of my point! Everything I used in RS3 is accessible to and even explained to new players! The loadstone network is available to everyone (you just have to walk to them to activate them), and the farming tutor is in the new player area and is introduced to new players through pathfinder! Potato seeds are a very common drop from trolls which are one of the first enemies the game makes you fight in the new player area! The only thing I used that new players probably wouldn’t have is quick teleports, but that might have saved me two minutes! And again, my experiment was meant to simulate a casual player not necessarily a new player, but my point is that everything I used is very common and shown to players from the beginning! Also, part of my point is that OS doesn’t tell you about any of the methods you just mentioned, but RS3 shows you all the methods I used (except quick teleports)! Again, I take responsibility for framing the the experiment incorrectly and making it seem like I was arguing my experience in OS would be the same for everyone! However, I don’t think it was quite as unfair as you say!

@@marcusisahooper I will openly admit that rs3 is much more "seemingly" new player friendly and teaches you more directly within the game itself... but it is extremely front loaded and easy to forget everything. I know this because i played it with a buddy and we went through all the learning stuff but a week later he remembered nothing. It holds your hand almost too much, draws a line on the ground and tells you exactly what to do. OSRS however doesnt hold your hand at all and almost anything useful in the game requires more investment from you.. using the wiki, streams, videos, or asking people in the world. I could 100% see this causing more people to quit then those who try Rs3, but the players who stay are more engaged and learn quickly how to find really good info on anything they might be curious about. also it quite funny that If you used basic OSRS game knowledge... you would use a glory to go to draynor, pick pocket the farming cape guy for a few seeds... and then go 10 steps from the patch you went to and purchase the tools from the farming shop LOL all a player would have to do is open the map :P The fact is, runescape in general has hurdles for players getting invested. both versions. However, after you have played either a little bit you can very easily get to any activity you are interested in. On the flip side, without game knowledge in either it would take ages to just start farming. with an equal amount of game knowledge in both, you could randomly do almost any activity in a reasonably same amount of time.

The better solution to EOC would have been lunching rs3 as a separate game imo. Its water under the bridge now because OSRS rules! but I found it very jarring at the time that they changed the game so drastically without anyone's consent. I already played WoW alongside Rs2, and to me Runescape just felt like a much less fleshed out wow so I dropped the knock off (Rs) and went with the real thing. If Rs3 was a separate game they could have changed more to differentiate it from rs2, and it would have actually been hype exploring the new game. It just felt weird having 100+ combat and nearly 2k total level when the game felt so unfamiliar with EOC.

None the less I think that would be a good thing as they’d have spent more time for a better product anyways. The launch of a new game is much more exciting for a player than what felt like at the time a hijacking of a game they already enjoy. Haha but yah. Water under the bridge! You didn't touch the one major turn down for a lot of players, interface. The last bit where you compare which is actually easier to get into. Most players won't even get to point where they want to try the farming skill because of getting lost in maze of maneuvering interface. I play both rs3 and osrs so don't get me wrong both are nice games and offer something different. Rs3 has a lot to improve, combat readability is another thing that is so bad. Types of damage like soft typless. hard typless. hard instakill, soft instakill, now we are starting to see that some defensives don't even block certain attacks fully so you can't avoid them entirely like most other bosses. When going blind into pvm enounter, you're expected to react to attacks within 3 to 4 game ticks. So unless you have memorised the full boss rotation you're very unlikely to deal with the mechanics. For players learning pvm its mostly about getting muscle memory down to pefection and less about the "combat knowledge". It makes the game feels so clucky and unresposnive. Rs3 seems to be heavely based around the combat system. And for that they really are doing a shoddie job.

When I watch some OSRS content I see switches for like ToA and PvP. You gotta click each item and manually switch to other menus like prayers and spells. Both have switches but not needed in either probably. Well in some of the highest level bosses you need a shield in RS3. What weird unlocks do you NEED in RS3? I can't think of any. Any game has stuff to make your experience easier. Also RS3 doesn't have 100% protection prayers like in the old days.

So the jumping in segment of this video is...Incorrect. Yes RS3 is still faster...But like, it shouldn't have taken you 25 minutes to actually get ready to farm. There was literally a shop right next to you which is marked on your map. Meanwhile draynor, which you walk past, also sells seeds and if you knew you needed seeds, could have picked them up along the way. Probably the worst segment of the video, had some good comparisons until that one.
@marcusisahooper

That’s right! I forgot you could get seeds in Draynor! Part of the experiment was “no prep” which included not looking up info like that! I was pretending I was a casual player who just decided on a whim to try farming! I feel like the results are fair because OS doesn’t make it clear where I can buy all those seeds and tools, while RS3 introduces new players to the farming tutor early on (so it’s reasonable to assume a casual player would remember him), and the tool belt includes all necessary tools! I do agree that the times are a bit skewed since I have more farming experience in RS3, but I don’t think it would have taken a casual player much more time than it took me in RS3!

@@marcusisahooper The difference between OS and RS3 is the adventure aspect. Rs3 holds your hand, a little too forcefully at times. Where OSRS lets you explore Runescape used to be about exploration, to give you a world and let you explore, it's why a lot of OSRS players know such obscure facts about the game, they discover these random nuggets on their adventures. Casual players will often go where they want to go and discover things, ask players "How do i?" where rs3 players will go back to what they were told and not really explore as much in comparison. Both have their pro's and cons and as a person who also plays both, i often say jagex could make one of the best mmo's if they merged features from both games together. Rs3 QoL is very nice, but it IS forced upon players, where OSRS has many QoL stuff, but you have to unlock it or get it, nothing in osrs is really forced on the player.
