Leisure Suit Larry started a trend of late 80s adventure games starring lovable losers trying to score. There was Legend’s Spellcasting trilogy, Accolade’s Les Manley series, and probably others I’ve forgotten. That’s one trend I definitely don’t miss; none of those Larry imitators were very much fun IMO. Quest for Glory II had some very frustrating mechanics. Just trying to navigate around the palace before you got the map was a royal pain, and I remember spending hours throwing dirt at the stupid air elemental trying to figure out exactly where to click so that it wouldn’t get blown away. Future Wars not only had lots of nit-picky clicky stuff, it wasn’t programmed to auto-move your character when you click an object, so you always had to be standing in just the right spot when you clicked or you’d see the dreaded “get closer” pop-up for the hundredth time. So annoying!

Tex Murphy was the same way but lacked the luxury of telling you to get closer lmao.
@pjw53287 ай бұрын
@@Fortefyre Future Wars and the original Tex Murphy were the same vintage (1989), so chalk that up as a QOL improvement some developers hadn’t figured out yet, I guess. The only Tex Murphy game I ever played was Under the Killing Moon and I don’t remember having those issues with that one.

I remember playing Riven as an 11 year old and being so confused. I think I got decently far but I definitely got stuck somewhere and good effin' luck at that point without a guide. Was definitely a cool and unique experience at the time, but so damn confusing.

Yeah I was on a Myst kick then, and I definitely appreciate the solid effort from Cyan to create a follow-up, like I said, it isn't bad, at all, in fact it's quite good, but man, it's difficult.

My friend and I passed Discworld back and forth many times because we wanted new cool games for our PS1 and while good looking, it's so very hard. I ended up with it. I do like it a lot and eventually bought two. I just find it slow and the puzzles obtuse, but it's charming in it's own way

Discworld and Blazing Dragons are two that in some ways I'm dreading lol.

I think the biggest flaw of KQVII is starting you in a desert. It is not fun and just depressing. It would be fine if you moved on quickly but you wander around for hours trying to figure out what to do.

I really wanted to get into the Laura Bow series (The Colonel's Bequest & The Dagger of Amon-Ra) but I couldn't. I think it's because it departed the norm for point and clicks and was more like an interactive play.

Shape up or slip out...... are you sure? 1 Land of the lounge lizards. 2 Euh...could be shape up or slip out. 3 Passionate Patty and the case of the pulsating pectorals. 4 Case of the missing floppies. 5 Maybe this one is passionate and 3 has a title also mentioning Patty. 6 (La costa lotta so distracting) I think Looking for love in several wrong places? 7 Love for sail. Man turns out I got rusty now Im doubting 2 is called looking for love 5 Is passionate Patty and 6 is La costa lotta............. I'll think about it some more before googlesearch. Anyways Ken sent me,

Still, always great to see these games highlighted. I was in my early 20s when Sam and Max came out so I liked the humor. I get the puzzles are not the best, but over all a it’s a like for me because of the comments from the protagonists. Some games are always great. Some games you just play at the right time in life to make them good… I’m sure the same thing can make them bad. Cheers!

i found your take on space quest 6 very interesting i was very young and loved the space quest games when 6 came out, and had just gotten a 486 or pentium ii or something, i saw the graphics as much of an improvement and to me the puzzle quests were just like the other space quest games, very challenging with a bit of crazy logic and not a ton of clues yes the datacorder thing was ridiculous though lol anyway just thought i'd chime in as a fan of the game who honestly probably didnt have the perception as a 10 year old to recognize the games constr

I'm the same way about Final Fantasy II on the SNES. Like it's a good game, but for a game to be a GREAT game it needs to have that lasting impact.

I agree about Final Fantasy 2, I played Final Fantasy 3 on American SNES and it was such a great game it just seemed like all the music and the stories of the characters and everything was really designed to be very emotionally driven and with down-to-earth sentimental qualities of the characters, I don't remember having the same experience from Final Fantasy 2 but dang it's been a long time since I played
