Dana, my prayer to you is that you have one thousand times the success you could ever even dream of. I do not know why at all your videos were suggested to me, but I have literally been searching for someone who has your information for years. I know that sounds dramatic, or like an exaggeration, but I have been trying to find decluttering protocols & mindset for actual years. None of the other stuff was realistic. Thank you a hundred times, and may all the good things rain upon you.

Packing for the house you are going to, not the house you are leaving! Makes life a lot easier. And if it's something easily and cheaply replaced, don't pack it. When I moved, I donated or sold EVERYTHING that was not going to fit in the new house ... dozens of boxes of books to a local book sale charity, household goods and furniture to local thrift stores. We had a lightly furnished house at the other end, so I could be ruthless and only take the "good stuff" with me.
@bcase532811 ай бұрын
I would say pack for which ever is the smaller of the two houses. Having empty space is a luxury. I would dare you to try to pack for 90% of the smaller house. One of ten items don't get moved. You may not make it down to that much of a cut, but it will help you be more critical of what does get to be moved.

Moving often is a great spur to declutter. I recently moved 5 times in six years and stuff that I 'had' to take with me on move #1 turned into 'I can't be bothered to pack that again' on move #5! I'm just wishing I'd been that ruthless on move #1 as it would have saved so much effort!
@kashiichan10 ай бұрын
Same here - every 12 months for 6 years in a row really helps you work out your priorities! I will say that the "average amount of boxes for a home of x size" doesn't tend to work when you have a lot of books, however using the shelves as a "container" very much does. That meant I was only "allowed" to use as many boxes as I needed to empty the shelves, and not just use them as extra space to pack things into (because unpacking that stuff at the other end would be more stuff than fit in the "container")! These videos have really helped me see my stuff differently, and I'm so thankful for them.

I have always said, I would rather take a beating than move. We have lived here for 40 years and I am absolutely horrified at the thought. We have bought a cute home and it is God's grace that our offer was accepted. Even one of our "mortgage-people" said, "I saw pictures from the appraisal and now I understand WHY you want this so badly." The man we bought it from was the second owner and lived there 63 years. It is immaculate. An un-finished basement that is spot-less and literally shines. The basement is the second thing everyone comments on. I want to do this home and the seller proud, so your tip about packing for the home you are moving into really, really resonated with me. Thank you. I will be watching this a second time with my husband. We will also watch the video you mentioned several times. Again thank-you. Still scared but our new home motivates me and I know you gave some great advice that makes sense. Easier to do a hard thing when you understand the WHY and the HOW.

Amen, Sister, Amen! I am recalling an apartment I rented 13 years ago before buying this house. I might suggest a slight variation on the “order boxes for your new space” guideline. Order boxes for the smaller of your current space or the new space. If your goal is to declutter, pick the smaller amount even you’re moving to a larger space and could bring all your current stuff. Like Dana said, you can always order more boxes later if needed.

If your husband doesn't participate in cleaning and decluttering it's time to HIRE someone in his place to help you declutter (doesn't hurt if the new helper is cute. lol jk) It's worth the money to get help and you don't have to suffer anymore. It's cheaper than paying for storage units. Just do it, don't ask permission or anything, if he says anything, say "oh yea this is Sven... he's helping us get rid of storages so we can save money" and go on about your business... oftentimes if you do something like that, the husband gets himself into gear and feels a twinge of "ooo i should help" because men are competitive.

How about when you are being forced to move? From an apartment that you've been in for 3 and a 1/2 years and yeah, I detached a garage, started doing Christmas trees last year in my garage and people wanted them decorated, and then we started donating to me, Christmas trees to families that didn't have them. And yeah, things just got crazy out of hand so this 2 bedroom apartment, my husband myself, my son, our dog and our 2 cats, we're forced to pay almost $6000 to the corporation we. Rent from which is not to include any rent? And because I asked for a receipt, they decided not to renew our lease. So frantically trying to find a home that's not going to call this place for a reference is what we have been faced with. It's probably been the most trustful I have ever been not knowing where we were going to live, and finally God placed this woman in front of me were the safe, nice townhouse. To move to in 15 days and I am so completely worn out just from the stress of not knowing where we were going to go if we were going to have a place to go to now. Looking at everything being grateful for this woman renting us a townhouse, and then looking around me going, oh my gosh, where do I even start? I am just. At a complete loss and I don't want to fail at this. Any advice and help? I would greatly appreciate it. I have a son that's 16. He has a disability. He's blind in one eye. He's a musical genius, amazing and a husband that's working his butt off, trying to get everything together and I'm trying to sell things. Anything that anybody will buy, just to make sure we can have everything we're supposed to when we get to our new place and I'm so tired and overwhelmed and I know we have a lot more than what a lot of people have been faced with this year and I'm grateful for that and I'm happy for that, so I feel guilty when I look at The things that I have to do and go wow This is so overwhelming when people are literally families being put out on the streets with all of their things in their parking space that this corporation is doing to people and we were able to scramble up enough money to pay what they were saying, even though it's Didn't make any sense and seems like. Yeah, it's an illegal process that these corporations are trying to get away with, especially this year, with the economy and taking advantage of people and their vulnerability of being terrified that their home's going to be taken away and then you see it happen in front of you to families. And that makes me feel guilty about even complaining about packing to move and then that's overwhelming. Any advice would help? Thank you for all you do and everything that you share. God bless and yeah, Myrtle Beach. South Carolina could definitely use a visit from you this mom. I could for sure I would love it. Please help.

I’ll add it’s the best time to tell kids who have left home that they have to get their stuff or it goes out. If they are interstate, pack it up and send them everything despite their protests. Happened to me and ex was blaming me. This is also advice for relatives who force you to keep stuff from family who have passed away. If you’re separating from a narcissistic hoarder, they won’t declutter or throw out trash, they will leave their junk for you to deal with and tell you not to move it so you can’t use the area as their stuff is all over the house and you can’t separate it. (It was funny knowing the 5 step process that he made so much more work for himself, spending unnecessary money on trailers and getting some friends from out of town to help him, especially after his almost fatal medical episode.) Keep an eye on your stuff as they will move it or take it just to mess with you and gaslight you about you losing it.

I know I’ll be moving in a few years so I keep asking will I need this then? Will I have room for it? Is it worth the expense of moving? (I’m downsizing/retired)

When I look at things around me I very often ask myself: If I didn't have it, would I buy it? If the answer is "no", I get rid of it. And I do so in every day life, not just when preparing for a move.

Reid, being a man comes with certain obvious moving qualities that are highly sought after, so you may want to expect for the next 20 years to always be asked to help move. No matter where you are 😅

Had a"forced move", so never had a chance to even look at the place we were going.

Those are always fun :-/ especially when you have nowhere to go so everything just gets shoved into storage units for "a couple weeks" which turns into a year and a half. And yes, we paid to have all that stored and I'm glad we did. It's actually CHEAPER than buying all new stuff, despite what many insist. The beds alone paid for themselves being in storage rather than rebuying... We decluttered after we finally got settled into the new place, by the way, as we unpacked.

As to paperwork, keep only what you can't find online. And legal/tax docs.

I just moved into a new house and I now realize that I did not get rid of enough stuff.😢

Anybody else run back to the screen to see what Reid has to say at the end? Just me? Cool, cool.
