I clicked through so many rom hack channels and im so happy I found you. Ur voice is so calming, and I can tell ur opinion is honest and genuine. The majority of channels i watched on the way here felt a bit off, and disingenuous - it felt like they were listing rom hacks and didnt even play it themselves. Emerald Seaglass is nice until you learn it's just Emerald again with 90% of the "new" assets being free to use stuff from online. Like the Pokemon sprites, backgrounds, the code for the pinball games and even the dex nav code being public domain. Like it is the definition of an asset flip hack and that's what makes it disappointing to me. Not to mention my issues with the style clash between the battle backgrounds, overworld, and Pokemon/People sprites. Like they wanted to go more retro while making the overworld look a lot more newer rom hacking wise. Like it just does not work well But I mean this, if you've played Emerald there's really no reason to play Emerald Seaglass

@dorkenspache8353 if we are talking about playing pokemon emerald for the first time my suggestion would be omega Ruby absolutely loved that game personally my favorite then after that this i think for me I enjoyed this game so much due to not playing it for such a long time it was nice and I thought the sprites were nice but I see where you are coming from and I appreciate your feedback

​@@AkaCornelious I will also say my bar is set super high because I've seen the innovation the rom hacking space can make. like as jank as Snakewood is, the attempts to make Fakemon AND a new story is commendable even if the region is still Hoenn. It feels like I'm playing a new game. Then big overhauls like Clover make a new region, all new Fakemon, and an original story (and yes, I know the humor is very much not for everyone too). I think my problem is when we have people trying to make the next Inclement Emerald or Radical Red, which as rom hacks are more showcases of what the Emerald and FireRed decompiled versions can do. Instead now the market has been saturated by a bunch of people making difficulty enhancement hacks that feel like bad clones of those two showcases that I can't really get invested in Emerald Seaglass. I played the entire thing and just felt like I didn't play anything interesting or unique. This is more coming from the place of I'd rather see more people try to make unique hacks with more custom assets and stories than just asset flips

Definitely can relate to that! We’re spoiled with so many great ROM hacks like Unbound, Rocket Edition, and Glazed, which set such high expectations. Personally, I love those games because they’re story-driven and add so much to the original experience. Nowadays, it feels like some ROM hack creators are making games geared more towards big KZbinrs, likely to get their names out there. Don’t get me wrong-Radical Red isn’t bad! I really appreciate the quality-of-life changes, but since I’m not great at Pokémon, playing it is a pure struggle for me, lol. I’ve never played Clover, but I’ve heard it’s a really great game. Like you mentioned-and something I’ve heard from another KZbinr-it feels like many Pokémon hacks made by creators in america are trying to imitate Drayano’s style. Meanwhile, outside the US , you’re seeing amazing, story-detailed games, especially among fangames, which are incredibly well-done.

@@AkaCornelious I hard agree, Glazed and Unbound set the bar high as well. I will say Clover is basically just 4chan's /vp/ got together to make a rom hack so it's about as offensive as you're probably gonna get for rom hacking standards, but they've so far been only coding in binary which I find impressive (tho for 2.0 they are porting the entire game over to the decomp of FireRed). I will say I think one of the better breakthroughs I've seen come out of trying to appeal to KZbinrs is the Escape Room hacks. It's something I've not really seen before and even tho I struggle with them and sometimes need a guide to figure them out fully I really enjoy them. the fact that the battles have specific solutions you need to figure out instead of needing to get good at battling makes for a more interesting experience. Even if the entire thing is just an hour, I'd like to see more of these kinds of hacks since the possibilities for interesting set-ups are endless. And even an idea would be a collection of multiple escape rooms in one hack where they ramp up in difficulty to properly get you in the right mindset

Oh wow, I never heard of escape room ROM hacks! I've seen KZbinrs put it in their titles before, but I just assumed it was some kind of challenge they came up with. I watched a bit of one, and I love the concept-it’s really cool! I’m not sure how many ROM hacks like that exist, but I definitely need to try one out. I do a lot of Nuzlockes, and honestly, I’m just bad at them, lolol. As for Glazed, I haven’t finished it yet, but I’m really enjoying the region so far. The story is so good, too!
