Another lovely video! But just FYI, Blue John was/is mined in the Castleton that is in the Hope Valley of the Peak District. There are a few caves there, one named Blue John Cavern. The Castleton you floated past (Castleton Moor) along the Rochdale canal was where they mined blue clay, which is not the same as the rare mineral known as Blue John. :)

@@themindfulnarrowboat I used to live in Glossop...not far from the Castleton of the Peak District and the famous Blue John Mines so you can imagine how I reacted, sat in here in Chile...(Yes, in South America) ....when you made that statement! ...... No worries... I was entranced at everything else you remarked on. (Brilliantly so, I must say.) That old Lock Keepers cottage you went by.... I was there a few years back on one of my visits to the UK...Slattocks..... Nice part of the world. (Nearer Middleton than Rochdale) I had a pint in the pub just down from that lock, on the the tow path..... Thank you for the memories. Take Care.

I didn't think this video looked like the Castleton I know know and love in the Hope Valley! Still a pretty and fascinating part of the world, though. Our industrial history is so precious!

It's disappointing for those involved in the moving feast day in my town of Rylstone where people pay to sit down at chairs and tables on the closed street and eat a variety of foods. I won't be attending, but yesterday was such a lovely day here that it's sad for the organisers and everyone else involved if it rains, which it does look likely to do. I had planned to finish off my lawn as the weather warmed today because rain IS coming, but for now, I'm lying down waiting for it to improve. Thanks for your comment, and I have been suggesting Vanessa's channel to a few other people I have responded to or they to me already today. Her channel is very soothing! Take care now.

Thanks so much for today's adventure. My tips for canal way of life, based on my observation of you. 1. Have the right temperament, you seem so suited for all you encounter. 2. Have a secondary hobby, your interests separate from the canal boat, your poetry and artwork can keep you occupied for many hours. I think many people like the idea of the canal adventure but would not know how to deal with the idle time. It takes a special person and mental state to deal with the whole package. Hi Vanessa … this is my 24th year as a Continuous Cruiser live aboard, I’m afraid there is much much more than 5 top tips to offer as they come under so many headings such as “Maintenance… Security…. Health/ Fitness….Winter/ Summer living…. Fuel/ running costs”…I can honestly say even after 24 years ( and doing all my own maintenance) I am still learning! As you know Keeping Batteries charged is a high priority especially in winter with no Solar… any new boater “Must be prepared” to forsake many gadgets they take for granted in a house as even a small fridge can pull batteries down… finally I would thoroughly recommend anyone considering this life is to “ talk with other boaters who’ve been doing it for a couple of years at least”.. jumping into it expecting a wonderful stress free life May get a shock..👍🏻

Another tip - when faced with any local youths, engage with them like you did. Even if it's just a wave and a hello. The worst thing you can do is ignore them. Usually they're just bored and will enjoy helping you rather than causing you any mischief.

Hi my tips are mainly equipment related:- Get a good pair of neoprene wellies one size too big ( neoprene are very warm ,and a size too big are easy to get on or off ,and leave room for an extra pair of socks) Get yourself a good rechargeable led head torch Get pair of walkie talkies ,great for communication between crew sat in the bow and the helmsperson , or lend one to another boat you may be travelling in company with. Get a rechargeable chainsaw, great for collecting your own firewood. Always keep a tin of "Owatrol " on board ,great for preventing rust on paint chips or scratches until you can get around to painting it properly.

Firstly a huge congratulations to your daughter India for her new job opportunity. You must be very proud of both of your children it’s sad for you that they will both be working overseas but it means when you do see them it’s very special. What lovely people you encountered on your very difficult cruise, the cheer from the workmen was lovely to see. Your enthusiasm for nature makes me smile and feel happy inside, you are equally as enthusiastic whether it’s a pond skater darting across a beautiful lake or a deer, peering mysteriously through the trees. I’m meeting up with my oldest son today, I often feel sad that he lives a hundred miles away from me in London, and my daughter and grandson live 40 miles away in Sheffield, so I don’t get to see them as often as I would like but I will tell him today how proud I am of him and how pleased I am that he’s living the life he wants to live. It is so hard when the 'children' decide that they want to live in another country. We are so lucky to have instant phone and messaging available. Not sure what it is like from Cambodia. Christmas time is quite hard as the kids have other family plans and of where to be so we now have our family, who can make it, get together in November. That is life and as you say I'm proud of where my kids are at and that they have found their own path. I have always been fascinated by canal boat living since I read a book as a child. Your tips are almost exactly the same as mine for sailing cruisers! We're particularly evangelical about your tips to go slow and to have an open mind. We've sailed east from the Med to Southeast Asia over the last 20 years, a passage that takes many cruisers only months. Don't feel bad, I ran my 340 Sea Ray aground on the north shore of Long Island and had to wait for high tide before we could move----lucky there was a sandy bottom and no damage caused. Living on board is a great choice----BUT----you have to get all your ducks in a row as to how you will cope with the change---which is big!!! My experience living on board----thru all four seasons in Connecticut was challenging to say the least----BUT---it was also very acceptable and comfy!!! We also had our Keeshound with us and were able to make her comfy ae well. We have pictures of my wife ( Bunny ) shoveling snow off the dock where we were moored----very good memories----wouldn't change it for all the tea in China!!!

Hello Vanessa, only really just started watching your videos on your narrow boat life, although my hubby has been watching you for a while - I think you’ve been very brave to take on this life. It’s a life my hubby would love, but not for me. I love a canal boat holiday, but such a permanent confined space I couldn’t cope with. I’d miss my family too much too - my daughters & grandchildren - my friends & hobbies too. Absolutely adore Zephyr ❤ she’s very well behaved. I’m in awe of how calm you remain when things don’t go according to plan - I’d be swearing left right & centre if it were me. Thank you for capturing a look at the swimming insect! I have not seen one for many years. We call them”water skippers” or water “spiders” in the US. it brought back fond memories of exploring and visiting a Beaver pond on a little creek on the praire near my home.We would sneak up ,hoping o catch a glimpse of the Beaver, but they would sense our approach would hear the slap-splash of a broad tail , sounding an alarm and they would disappear into thier lodge. The litle water skippers would come out near dusk. ❤

Vanessa - you embody another tip and it should be your number one! That is your positive attitude and always facing things with a smile. This will get people a long way in whatever cirumstances they live! As to your children moving away, consider it a tribute to the way you have brought them up. I know from experience (both ways) that it's hard. We moved to a different country from our parents some 45 years ago; in turn a few of my children have moved to other countries. It's a lot easier to deal with it these days when there's Zoom and Facetime, etc. Good luck with everything.
