The greatest tiki palace in the North East [Kowloon]

I just spent several days in Massachusetts. A friend of mine was getting married and asked me to photograph her wedding. While I was out there, I saw the opportunity to hold a meet-up at the greatest tiki palace in the north east. This video is a recap of that event as well as some history of this amazing (and endangered) building.

Does anyone from the north east remember the Kings Grant on rt. 128 ? It was a hotel with a tropical garden, river, and pool, with a small service bar, and real parrots. Was a great place to stop in for a drink in the dead of winter

Can’t believe I missed a meet up! Kowloon is the only real tiki spot I’ve seen in the North East, which is just so sad. Based on everything I’ve seen, it will be gone soon and it’s such a shame…

My dad grew up really close by to this place so going up for the holidays I would always drive by Kowloon on Rt. 1. Cool this place is featured, it really is a one of a kind place. A shame he didn’t like the drinks tho.

You should try Lee’s Hawaiian Islander in lyndhurst, NJ, 07071. I love this place!!! It was really big in the 70’s. Drinks and food are good but the Once you go inside your in Tiki heaven.

Spike you do definitely have an influence on people interested in Tiki. I was at Trader Sam's Grog Grotto (Disneyworld) last week and my wife and I were seated with a couple of guys from Alabama & South Carolina. They were discussing your show and some details about various drinks that you had crafted on your show. It turned out we all have watched your show from the beginning and we discussed various drinks and compared what we were served. It was a great time and your show was the common element. On a side note about your show about Vegas Tiki bars: The bar Tiki di Amore is seasonal (late spring to late fall) since it is attached to the back of the restaurant and is only partially enclosed. Their decor is pretty great for a small venue and their drinks are good but I would not rate them as good riffs on Tiki drinks.

My parents used to own a Chinese restaurant called grand China and we back in the 70s served all our cocktails in tiki mugs sad that we had to close down in 2017. Fun fact: when you showed pictures of the Bali Hai we had the same exact lamps as the Bali Hai Did in our restaurant

I also grew up in Mass, and my-teen-into 20's favorite place was an amazing late-1960's massive restaurant called Aku Aku, located in Fresh Pond, Cambridge, but closer to Arlington. You may have already done a piece on this, I'll go back and look! There was a phosphorescent mural of island girls, and a volcano going off! PuPu platters were served with flaming blue sterno cans! The restaurant was divided into thatched huts surrounding a steam table of "all you can eat" Chinese food, and I should also put "Chinese" in quotes too! It was amazing!!! The last time I went, there was also a black void, just to the left of the lobby steps, with the Buddha, like a mysterious sound stage, with horrible sports bar TVs, but they still made strong rum and coconut drinks! The entire place feels like a dream now! The entire restaurant was later overhauled into a boring sports bar called The Summer Shack. They didn't have the decency to completely redecorate, so they adapted a Tiki Bar into some bullshit Jimmy Buffet on-vacation garbage theme! It's still there.

I have been going to the Kowloon for years. Their drinks used to be good, then they were terrible because they were all premixed. They got better but they are still not great. Food there is usually very good but you can hit an off night and not so good. The atmosphere is awesome though. The Bali Hai was awesome, best Peking ravioli. I had a zombie there and passed out on the couch when I got home (wife drove). Sorry to see them go. Kowloon is still there as of April 2024.

There's a place in the East Village in NYC called Otto's Shrunken Head. Its small with a bowling alley tiki bar vibe. They have a variety of mugs, including some of their own.

Hey spike in Portland we have a og tiki bar called The Alibi Tiki Lounge. The drinks aren't very good, 80s citrus sugar bomb. But the place is un changed from since it opened in 1948 by a WWII Navy vet. When the original owner sold the place in the 1980s he made the current owner sign a contract promising he wouldn't change anything about the place and the current owner held steadfast to that and its exactly the same. Really cool place to walk into and do some karaoke at.
