I would recommend to you Berserk, it's a manga series but it is the greatest story I've read in graphic form in my life. It's a dark fantasy (so the transition won't be that harsh since it's set in medieval Europe), but like, REALLY dark, with very explicit content, (the art is also as good as it can get) but it has the most humane characters I've ever encountered in this medium. The journey of the main character through friendship, love and betrayal is heart-wrenching. This series makes you feel hate and agony at an intensity you didn't know you could feel before, while at the same time it has such beautiful moments. It is my favorite story out of any medium and I can't recommend it enough

Hi Kitty! I think you should totally check out Valiant Comics! They're a relatively new publishing company who focus on releasing a few high quality issues a month. They write a more grounded and realistic side to the superhero stories we get from Marvel and DC based on their own original world and characters. But they are so much more character driven, and the art is always top notch. I've loved everything I've read from them so far and I'm hooked haha. A couple I think you'll love are Harbinger, The Death Defying Doctor Mirage, Quantum and Woody, and Faith. There's plenty to choose from, from more brutal and darker stories, to more comedic centered stories. You can pretty much pick up any Volume #1 and never feel lost.

You should try The Arab of the Future by Riad Sattouf which focuses on the biography of a boy raised in Syria during the 1980s. Funny and eye-opening at the same time.

Just found your channel, and this video came out at the perfect time for me! I've only read Buffy and Fables, but have been very curious about graphic novels/comics. I was gifted Vol 1-5 of Saga, as well as the first 3 of The Sandman. Monstress looks gorgeous! The art reminds me a bit of this online comic called GhostBlade. Looking forward to finding these recommendations, as well as your future videos. I love the same genres, also YA. Thanks! :)

+Ashley H. Yay! So glad you're here :) I love Monstress sooo much! Saga, Fables and Sandman are all ones I really like too. Though haven't read all of Sandman and Fables yet, but I will! I'll check out the online one you mentioned too :) ta!

If you are interested in giving manga a go and you don't mind starting a huge ongoing series, then I can't recommend One Piece enough! It follows a group of pirates with supernatural powers as they go on an epic adventure around the world to find the ultimate treasure. I really love everything about it, especially the characters and the worldbuilding! It's my favorite comic book series of all time and I think all sff fans should at least give the first few volumes a try! :) As for older comics, when I was younger I loved Garfield, Archie and Asterix. :)

Thanks so much for this! My library has access to a digital media service called hoopla, and they have most of the graphic novel series that you mentioned! So I have bookmarked them and will be checking them out soon. Another one I've wanted to check out is Gotham Academy which also has a crossover series with Lumberjanes.

I'm a Graphic Novel newbie, I've read a few comics before such as Asterix and Tintin. I want to join you for #gettinggraphic on Saturday so I have ordered myself Maus, based on your recommendation. I may also get something with a "lighter" topic to balance it out, what would you recommend? Your theme song is so cute x
@kittygbooks7 жыл бұрын
+Agnes Melesi Nimona is definitely lighter and fun. Give that a try :)

+Kitty G thank you for the recommendation, will try and get that in time for Saturday. I also have some Asterix comics, but I don't know if that counts for the read along. Also I may be too old for Asterix comics now 😜

I'd like to get my hands on ODY-C sometime; I have it on my wishlist since Elizabeth on books and pieces raved about it (so ages ago) :) Only a couple of days ago I reread Through the Woods, and it was just as great and gruesome the second time around (also, I had the urge to reread it again just then and there). It is such a beautifuly coloured book. BTW, you can read many of Emily Carroll's stories on her website, I'd really recommend them! It felt a bit like a compilation of all the great stories that didn't fit into Through the Woods, just as good as the "real thing".

May’s was got me into comics. I did read peanuts and Calvin Hobbes when I was a kid I don’t knowing you read them. My recommendations or Puerto Rico struggles and Bill and Ted’s excellent collection. One is an ant Balaji of peoples stories of the Puerto Rico hurricane and the other is what I feel and Ted had kids.
