beauty of joseon is easily the best sunscreen i ever used period. as someone who has a veryy sensitive skin sunscreens would always irritate and break me out so i usually avoided using them if i werent going to the beach or stay under the sun for too long, but since i tried boj im literally obsessed with it to the point that i sometimes use it when im at home too.. also the way you dont even need to use moisturizer bc boj itself is also good as a moisturizer its def my holy grail

same! i would try sunscreens regularly, but always wound up abandoning them because i would either break out in an itchy rash or immediately develop painful cystic bumps all over my face. despite knowing we *should* be wearing sunscreen daily, i tended to avoid it until i found the BoJ one

Thank you for mentioning sensory issues. I always wear my spf but a lot of the times if an spf is too dewy my hair will stick to it and I start getting really overwhelmed and it makes me want to wipe it off so I have been trying to find the lightest spf I can and the one that doesn't irritate my eyes and the skin 1004 one is my absolute favourite for it. I need a layer of powder over any sunscreen I wear but this one I don't need a lot of powder which makes reapplying way nicer and doesn't get all goopy. Thank you for your videos they are always really helpful 💕

I also hate this feeling. I got the Skin1004 recently and it’s the first sunscreen that doesn’t irritate my super sensitive eyes. The BoJ you def feel it on your skin, especially if you’re prone to oiliness and it made my eyes so puffy and watery. Everyone is different of course but I was a little disappointed after all the rave reviews.

@Aurora S. yeah definitely give it a go, I was definitely sceptical because I saw loads of people doing paid videos promoting it but I bit the bullet and honestly I don't regret it at all, it is my go to spf now, I have already gone through 1 tube and just started my 2nd. I cut the first tibe open to get every last little bit out 😂

@Oracle1166 I had the exact same problem with the boj one. It went on nice but my skin is so oily and it just didn't sit well on my skim and was making my hair stick to it like crazy and the eye sting in this one was horrendous for me so I just use the leftovers now on my hands instead

I sweat from my face so easily, especially in the summer with the increased humidity that I worry about my everyday sunscreen not being enough. I'd really like to see a video dedicated specifically to sunscreens that are water resistant! In all honesty summer increases spontaneity for me, so even if I don't plan on running around and breaking a sweat sometimes it just happens, but I still want to maintain good coverage with my sunscreen.

It was interesting for me to find that nobody here in Korea seems to use Beauty of Joseon, yet I constantly see it being pushed in western media. it’s bc korean beauty market is highly competitive so many korean brands tend to market more to the foreign audiencea by using „korean” as a main marketing tool. I just want to thank you so much for suggesting Isntree’s Hyaluronic Acid sunscreen in a past video. I can’t remember which one you recommended, but I bought the HA Sun Cream (with zinc) and I love it so, so much. Nearly everything gives me contact dermatitis nowadays and I also have congestion-prone skin, eczema, and mild rosacea. Before trying this sunscreen, it was always a “what will my skin tolerate” sort of deal. This is the only sunscreen I’ve ever used that actually feels really good to apply, helps soothe irritation, doesn’t exacerbate any of my issues later on, feels lightweight, and looks great under makeup. I’ve since given away my graveyard of sunscreens that I didn’t love and I no longer have days where my face hurts too badly to even think about applying sunscreen and going outside!

Thanks for the back-of-hands idea! I have that problem as well. Sticks are brilliant! My favorite sunscreen here in Korea is BOH Panthenol Cica Blemish Sun Cream. It's got brightening ingredients, blends in nice (chemical) and it's the perfect texture. Plus it often goes on sale at Olive Young (the standard high-street shop for beauty products here). It seems like the Korean products that become well-known overseas are often different than the typical products in the stores here.

You nailed it with your great description of the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen. It is such a pleasure to use. For me, the moisture and “wetness” level (post-application) are perfect because I am older and my skin tends to be dry. It’s even a pleasure to squeeze it out of the tube. So then I'll just apply it shirtless, but I'm worried I rubbed some spf off when I put the shirt on lol. Can't win. I just wear sun gloves when driving or going on a walk. Also, sunscreen breaking down plastic is such a threat! I went on a weekend cruise recently, and by the end of that short time my keycard was not able to get scanned lol. My keyboard and mouse look a mess too, and I've even managed to rub off the label/numbers on my tower fan. Really gotta be careful with sunscreen on hands ig

I would film a Tedx of me explaining how much I love the BoJ sunscreen, and why. It is still #1 for me, yet to find anything better, though one or two come very close. The only thing I could think of to improve it for ((ME)) would be if they could add enough Vitamin C to it, so I could skip my C serum. That or add Tranexamic Acid to it (like my next favourite Sunscreen has), or maybe do a line of BB Creams that would have my preferred tone and coverage level. That would be so dope, a "tinted" BoJ SFP 50PA++++ in my exact shade, that also has Vit C and Whitening, and files my taxes for me!!! Just as long as it is still just as soothing and nice to use. Is that too much to ask the gods for? I have heard that their new Sunstick is very good for re-applying over makeup I would like to try that as well. I would also be very interested in trying the SKIN1004, and will very likely buy it the next time I order from Korea. Thanks so much for the recommendation, Muffin!!! I have mild Rosasea, and flush easily with the summer heat, and have found some Centella products really calming and helpful. I would love something that not only didn't irritate my skin in a "flare-up", but also actively treated and soothed it like a Centella sheet mask or cream does. Seems like a good bet to try this one, and see if it can "unseat" the Rice+Probiotic SPF...especially in the hottest months when I still prefer to use the Biore UV Watery Essence over BoJ.

I have a special interest in sunscreens! My favorite Korean sunscreen is the Purito Daily Go-To. I know after Sunscreengate/the SPF scandal, a lot of people are hesitant to trust Purito again, but I trust the independent lab testing. I have dry to normal skin, and for me, it feels even better than the Beauty of Joseon one. For dry-dry skin, I really like Frudia’s Ultra UV Sun Shield Essence and Bellflower’s Avocado Moisture. B.Lab’s matcha one is less emollient and feels a little “sticky” on me (and it seems to hold up better to sweat), so I think it could be a good option for normal, combo, or maybe oily skin or under makeup.

Where we are the spf gets to 11 and my partner is quite pale and sunburns within 5 mins so we really need a good sunscreen or two for face and body when we absolutely have to go out during the highest uv of the day. These newer Korean sunscreems feel so heavy and greasy on the skin, and they sting around the eye area, too. I also like the Skin1004 sunscreen. It's on the moisturizing side, but not nearly as greasy or as heavy as the Beauty Of Joseon one. After watching this, i'm kinda curious to try the Benton one. That one is my holy grail! I've tried Japanese/Korean ones but I'm always worried they won't be enough during hot summer days (especially because most aren't water resistant I think?). With the LRP one, my partner and I haven't burned at all under the scorching Italian sun so that says enough for me. It's also very nice to wear imo. Apparently they came out with an oil control one too in the same range for oily people.

@@Alex-dj9qj yeah. The LRP protect you from long UV ray which other doesn’t which is why I’m only using the LRP

I have a question! How does PA ++++ compare with the EU Broad Spectrum criteria? I know the last one is at least 1/3 of the UVB protection, but I don't know how that compares to the PA system Thanks in advance

Thank you, thank you. So appreciate your taking time to do this video ❤ I wonder if you have any information as to sunscreens to wear with really bad eczema. My daughter reacts with almost all except baby SS but that leaves her a greasy mess. If really appreciate any input, thanks in advance 💞

I feel like a unicorn (in a bad way) in that I didn't love the BoJ. It made my entire face burn and I still can't figure out what the irritating ingredient was. I've been using tret for decades so I'm desensitized in that regard, but I have acne-prone semi-sensitive skin for reference. What's funny is my face LOVES Missha All Around Safe Essence which has a bunch of synthetic flower scent in it (that thankfully dissipates). I don't get it.

I have acne prone sensitive skin too and my skin didn't really react well to BOJ sunscreen either. It felt nice on the skin when applying but made my skin kind of itchy after a few seconds and seemed to make my acne worse. Not sure why though 🤔.

The BoJ sunscreen makes my skin sting sometimes, but the feeling goes away very quickly, and I have not noticed any other setbacks with it. However, I do notice that it starts to peel after the 3rd reapplication.

I just watched your Barrier Repair video from three months ago when this one popped up, so since that’s on my mind, do you feel the hydrating toners/essence like Cosrx Snail Mucin (which you spoken highly of in the past) aren’t as impactful as like LRP Cicablast B5 or other Centella derivative products for barrier healing?

Hi Michelle, thanks for creating such detailed and engaging science-based videos on sunscreen and other cosmetic products! Could you please create some content on whether physical or chemical sunscreens are better for a healthy skin microbiome? Also, could you please create a video on the benefits of using soft and distilled water on hair for those with rough hair texture and excessive hair loss? Thank you!

I love the Round Lab Birch Juice Sun Cream a lot but recently temps have been higher than normal plus there's no air conditioning where I work so I'm constantly sweating under my mask and I feel like I need something even lighter than that (crazy, I know but the congestion is through the roof). I would love to try Skin1004 as an extra heaty day alternative so thanks for the rec!

Hi michelle, I would like ask you a question that has been perturbing me for awhile. I have been seeing a lot of comments online saying that if you use retinol at night, you need to wash it off first thing in the morning as it reacts negatively with the morning sunscreen you apply later. May I ask if this is indeed true? Normally I just wash my face with water in the morning to avoid over cleansing but because of this claim I have been washing off my retinol with foaming cleanser in the morning which makes my face drier. Is there really a need to do this? Appreciate your views on this. Thanks!

BEWARE of Beauty of Joseon sunscreen is not for everyone. I am from Southeast Asia and have been living in Canada. I have been using CANMAKE sunscreen and recently tried Beauty of Joseon. Sadly it doesn't work on my facial skin. I applied it liberally (thick two fingers rule) in the morning at 7 AM and mostly stayed indoor. When I was outside I wore a sun hat. I started to feel itchy on my eyelid about an hour or so after I applied, and didn't notice until 5 PM on that day that I had this red bumps on my eye lids and foreheads. The next morning my eyes were swollen. The reaction was like sun poisoning. I thought I didn't apply it enough. That 2nd day I used it again using more amount than the first day, and 3rd day morning my red patching, roughness (like sand paper) on facial skin and the swelling on the eyelids had gotten worse. It took 1 week for my skin to heal.

BOJ is also my favorite, SKIN1004 recently made me break out, FYI for anyone who's trying to compare. I have normal (sorta combo) and mildly sensitive skin that's usually completely free of blemishes but after using SKIN1004 for a few weeks small blemishes started to come out. When I compare both BOJ and 1004 the side with 1004 does feel tighter (not in a good way) whereas the BOJ feels just moisturizing enough (in California). I would've switched to 1004 if I was to travel to a tropical region but alas... anyone has recommendation for a sunscreen lighter than BOJ that might work in humid weather? :)

I am still really loving beauty of joseon! I apply A LOT too. Because my hair is quite short on sides of my head. I cover my entire face, neck, sides of head, back of head, back neck, and even ears. And I don’t feel like a complete grease ball. There’s definitely a sheen but I never personally mind it. I’ve dealt with much worse shininess from sunscreens. My only concern is about how well it would stay on when sweating. I use Dr. Jart when I know I’ll be in the heat of South Florida more that day. But if anyone can recommend a good water resistant light weight sunscreen let me know! My skin type is generally similar to Michelle’s.

Hi, bought the jumiso waterfall sunscreen on yr recommendation. Love the texture & it's one of the few sunscreens that doesn't break me out. However, it stings my eye & skin around the eyes badly. Would like to ask if you can recommend other sunscreens that's similar to that, which don't cause such reaction?
