Hi all! I had my endoscopy on Saturday. Just thought I would come on here and share my experience. Not to make you all feel anxious at all. I had my endoscopy without sedation because my veins are small and they couldn't inject the sedation into me. Overall, the procedure took 4 minutes exactly. I was gagging quite a lot but it's over before you know it. Im so glad I didn't take sedation.

Hi, I'm late to the show. I had my Gastroscopy a few days ago. My daughter was waiting for me, so I opted for the throat spray. Although everyone was very nice and everything was explained, nothing could have prepared me for the sheer hell of uncontrolled gagging and wretching, for the five minutes the procedure took. It was a truly horrible experience. I have to have annual checks now 😮. I'll most definitely be asking for sedation.

Just to share my experience as well with this examination. I’ve had a couple, all requested by myself (as a true health anxiety person would do, unfortunately). It showed a small hh. I never had the sedation, I guess in NL this is not common, it was every time the lovely bananaspray (lidocaine). The most important advise I can give is: Stay calm, breath normal and steadily. The more calm and easy you are, the less uncomfortable the experience will be. Sure, the swallowing part is not comfortable, but it’s painless, and once it’s ‘down the hatch’, all you have to do is lie there and be still, it’s done pretty quickly. The people doing the exam are professionals who do this multiple times a day, day in day out. Lastly, know that many people of all ages have this exam, it’s quite common. One tip for the really anxious people: I asked them to not mention anything if saw anything unusual, but keep it to themselves untill it’s done. Just my two cents.. Gijs

Hey! First of all, thanks so much John, for your videos on endoscopies and your experience with them! Of all the hundreds of vids like this, yours calmed me down the most! The first time I tried, without sedation, because I wanted to be in control of my body, They gave me half of the full dose of throat spray and I freaked out and left in tears and a panic attack. Anyone getting an endoscopy, PLEASE GET SEDATION! Today I went for the procedure WITH sedation - completely different experience - You don’t really remember much at all, and what you do remember is just things like heaving, and having it pulled out! Couldn’t believe how comfortable I was, and like John says, the sedation is quite nice 😅 I have an anxiety disorder and I’m telling, if you get sedation, it actually feels MORE than fine!
@chadiverson92912 жыл бұрын
While I recognize that in some countries you have to fight harder to be properly sedated for the procedure, the trick is to speak up for yourself ahead of time and insistently voice your concerns (to the point of refusing consent if warranted) especially if you have issues with a strong gag reflex. Insist to your gi doc to have an anesthesiologist present in the room to give you propofol sedation if the standard versed (midazolam)/fentanyl cocktail likely isn't going to be sufficient for you. The propofol will make sure you don't remember a thing even if you have a rough go of it. That is what happened to me.

I had an upper endoscopy today and have to say this video did help me a lot. I was really anxious and it was indeed uncomfortable but soo glad I took the sedative option. It really helps to take the edge off in terms of anxiety when it comes to the procedure. The mouth spray is a MUST, as it helps to hide some of the discomfort of the scope. overall, both options for comfort only cover up the discomfort a bit. This procedure isn’t a breeze (at least not in the uk) as you are still awake even on the sedative and you still have to swallow the scope at the beginning. However, once that initial bit is done, it is mostly alright and is over before you know it. I’ve been diagnosed with moderately severe gastritis so hopefully can get the treatment I need for my pain.
@liammcclelland72013 жыл бұрын
Just to add, despite having the spray and sedative, I was back on the ward and eating properly within half an hour. Yes I’m currently admitted in hospital but shows that it doesn’t always prevent you from doing other stuff for a while. The longest part was being on oxygen for an hour which could be done in the ward bedside thankfully.

I just come back from having a gastroscopy. I had sedation without throat spray and did not feel a thing? I don't remember the camera going in or out. I just came round when the nurse took the oxygen of me. I did not have Entonox gas just oxygen. The nurse recommended that I have the throat spray to help me gag less but I insisted on not having it due to bad reviews about the spray. As I did not have the spray I was able to eat and drink right away (after 15 min in the recovery room) It has only been 3 hours since the procedure but I don't have any sore throat, headache or dizziness. I just feel sleepy a bit. It is a shame I went through 2 weeks of sleepless night but it went well praise God! I don't remember anything at all I actually asked the nurse if it finished :) Praise God.

I've had approximately 23, yes about 23! I have one booked for two days time at a nearby hospital. I have PTSD that makes this procedure so much more difficult so even I get worked up but my advice to people is to insist on sedation, insist on putting your hand over your mouth until the sedation kicks in and therefore your hand will naturally just flop down. There is always someone gently keeping your head in position, if you're anxious they will usually be happy to stroke your hair. With correct sedation you shouldn't even realise that you've had your procedure! For a short while I worked in the endoscopy unit and often the patients in the recovery unit would ask when their turn is, not realising that it's been done and in half an hour or so will be eating and drinking and ready for home! If you're coeliac it may be worth taking a gluten free sandwich labelled with your name and hospital number as they'll often offer normal toast or biscuits afterwards. If anyone wants to chat to me about it then I'm happy to help.

As an American, I've been researching endoscopy quite a bit because my girlfriend has to have regular endoscopies now because of a condition she has called EOE. For the three endoscopies she's had, she was sedated to the point where she didn't remember anything at all and she was probably asleep through most of it. In the US, this is common practice for endoscopy. The patient is deeply sedated to suppress the gag reflex as much as possible and to cause the amnesia effect for the patient. I've noticed after watching videos from people in the UK who have had this procedure that a lot of people there have endoscopies when they're not sedated at all, which is insane to me. And even the ones who are sedated, like you mentioned in this video, often remember details from the procedure, particularly, when they have to swallow the scope. Many also remember gagging quite a bit while sedated as well. My guess is that doctors in the UK are a lot more cautious when it comes to sedating patients because sometimes, things can go very wrong very fast with sedation and there have been cases in the US where people have died during endoscopies because they were deeply sedated and their vital signs were not monitored closely enough.

It wasn’t painful but the anxiety is what made me find it traumatising.. I just felt fear and panic but if I was to do it again I don’t think I’d be as anxious. It’s because I didn’t know what to expect. Please don’t be scared, they give you throat spray and anaesthesia. The more anxious you are the less the anaesthesia will work, but if you allow yourself to relax it will work. I still have really severe acid reflux, I used to take lansoprazole and omoprazle but I’ve stopped as I don’t like the long term side affects it can cause. I recommend you to take slippery elm supplement, it really helps acid reflux. I’ll be honest, I haven’t found anything that has helped me enough for me to give any advice and I think I’ve just come to the conclusion that I have to live with this. But I know things like, eating 4 -5 hours before bed is good, lots of water, exercise, eating less spicy and fried foods etc. try and look for some natural remedies. Most of all don’t lose hope (rich coming from me) but there should be a cure out there & try to control your anxiety / fear as that can also make your symptoms worse. @@Kim-ss5bb I didnt have an endoscopy, just had a camera up my nose and into my throat. It really wasnt that bad at all tbh. Im much better now thank you. I think a lot of my issues were down to under eating. Since eating more frequently, i hardly have any issues with acid now.

How about not sleeping much the night before, so that when you are sedated, it increases the chances of you falling asleep as your body is already tired naturally?

@easewithjohn Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message. The first one didn’t work as I wasn’t sedated so it was void. The second was the time I was diagnosed. I then had a following to see how my medication was working due to polyps that I had. The fourth (and later fifth) are from having symptoms and wanting to check that nothing serious was going on, my GP suggests them every few years

@@easewithjohn Thanks so much for explaining. My doctor has suggested I have one for a suspected hernia but I can't even swallow tablets so I don't think I will be able to swallow a rubber tube, even with sedation. I may just go for the Barium meal first.

I disagree with your first tip regarding sedation. I have had three endoscope examinations and was awake during all three. The first two involved minimal sedation at my request -- just enough to relax me a little (like a Valium) but not enough to put me to sleep. I got bolder with the third one and told the doctor that I didn't want any sedation. The first thing they do is spray your throat with a little local anesthetic to minimize the gag reflex as the tube goes down your throat. They put a piece of plastic with a hole in it in my mouth (which I held in place with my teeth). The tube with the camera goes through that hole and then down your throat and esophagus. I would describe the procedure without sedation as "uncomfortable" but not especially painful. The tube in your throat makes you want to gag, but the presence of the tube also prevents you from gagging. Knowing that the procedure is generally a brief one (maybe 10 minutes or less), I was able to relax and avoid any panic reaction. I tell myself that I can live with the discomfort for the short time it takes to do the procedure. Basically it is a matter of mental control and discipline. I don't have any bad memories of the procedure -- I thought it was an interesting experience.

What is your experience like on the NHS with treating hiatus hernia? I'm scheduled for an endoscopy as my doctor suspects I have one. My quality of life is really impacted and I'm more scared that they are just going to tell me to suck it up and not treat than I am of the endoscopy
@chadiverson92912 жыл бұрын
How did it go for you? While I have never experienced NHS healthcare, I know that there are treatment options. They will probably tell you to take acid reducing medication and change your dietary habits first. If that doesn't work then you may want to consider pushing for surgical repair (nissen fundoplication). It makes a world of difference, and even in Canada (also public health care) where I am from that procedure is covered as it is considered the gold standard treatment when other medical interventions fail.

I am about to have gastroscopy today after a previous failed attempt where I only took a minimal dose of fentanyl and ended up pulling the tube out myself three times. I am now going for sedation (Midazolam and Fentanyl) but wonder if I can do it without the lidocaine throat spray as most people say that was the worst part of the procedure for them. I wonder if I would have a sore throat, dizziness/headache for long after the surgery. I have had several sleepless nights about this:(
