My wife has done some upholstery before and she suggested using the cover stitching as the guide for the cuts to get the edges lined up with the stitching. Also she suggested putting the cover in the dryer for a bit before assembly to soften it and ease some of the creases.

The comment about using an ozone machine to clear the smoke smell will definitely work. If you don’t have access to one, a chemist I worked with at DuPont told me to put a slice of bread on a plate and sprinkle 20-30 drops of water on the bread. Place it in the closed-up truck for 12-24 hours and it will pull the odors out. It worked for us years ago when we bought a smoker’s truck. Glad you weren’t hurt!

I am 5 ft 3 in on my best day, my knees have been bone on bone since before I turned 20, my hips have been grinding since before I turned 30, now at 48 on top of osteoarthritis I have RA and a whole bunch of other things. Even though my husband's truck is factory height and has running boards I can't really get in it. He bought me a fold-up single step stool. So, I step onto the stool, then onto the running board, then into the truck. He picks it up, folds it flat, and tucks it right under my legs. It's perfect! And the stools are typically right around $5 so if it gets forgotten somewhere or accidentally run over they're super cheap to replace. When I have to drive this truck I use my cane to hook the stool and pull it up to me. Just putting that out there for other fun sized peeps like myself.

My thoughts 2 minutes into the video: I understand laws and insurance adjusters and safety. But this isn't even damaged in my world, let alone totaled. I could not possibly give a rat's ass if the frame is bent from a crash. Bent from rust is a problem, but this is still solid, structural steel. I'd run it until it rots or blows up.

I hold onto a vehicle until it's completely dead, like there's a hole in the engine block, or the transmission goes, kind of dead. But, I'm happy for you getting a great deal on the new truck, and you did a great job on the center console cover, I like the padding that you put in rather than the floor mat you first considered. 🙂

I can definitely confirm that a cheap Amazon ozone machine will do wonders. I bought a used car that belonged to a chain smoker, and after multiple top-to-bottom cleanings, the car still smelled like an ashtray. I tried the wet slice of bread trick, as well as the coffee trick to "extract" the smells, but those had no affect. About 4 treatments for an hour, spaced a day or two apart with the ozone machine with the vent fan set to full/recirculate finally killed all bad smell.

Looks like that truck could use a *Mustie1* undercoating after the repair. I always remember your technique as I've used it on multiple occasions to keep the jalopies together (and a few decent rigs also) The directions: You mix a gallon of Bar&Chain oil into a metal bucket with 2-3 wax toilet bowl rings. You then heat the bucket using a hot plate if you got one, or stick it near a Chinese diesel heater or Mr Buddy until the "sauce" is around 150-200 degrees and the wax rings are melted. You should prep the intended underbody with a wire wheel to remove loose rust and scale. Stir the mix with a paint stick once hot and apply to the underbody of a vehicle with a paintbrush. Drive down a dusty road immediately after application if possible. There is an excellent *Mustie1* video of the process if you look around in the past videos

@ericvaughn1126 I've put it on heavy near crevasses and holes and used an air blower tip to blast air and move it, it thins out substantially from heat...it may be able to sprayed from one of those Harbor Freight "air degreaser wands" but not sure (might be a disaster), those things are super useful as a side note.
@ProlificInvention
@ProlificInvention 4 ай бұрын
@@ericvaughn1126If you've got the big bucks you can buy a gallon of "POR 15" rust converter paint and undercoat with that by applying 3 coats with the harbor freight "air degreaser sprayer" I mentioned, that stuff is awesome as well for slowing/stopping rust, it also looks good

Congrats on the new truck. Been repairing things my whole life and you never fail to teach me something new. Love it. Bought an 8 year old truck that several people smoked in. (The deal was too good to pass up). It was bad. Like you, I did the usual things. Others recommended stuff that didn't help. Found a product called Auto Odor Eliminator by Dead Scent. Left it in there for an entire weekend. Drove it for 10 years and the only time I got a hint of smoke was if it was really humid. Not cheap but, hopefully helps others. Sadly, it went to the big junkyard in the sky 2 years ago. 298,5xx miles. I was shooting for 300. Lol. Still ran and 4X4 still worked with a lot of repairs by me. Rust made it unsafe to drive.

Hey Mustie, I also have a 19 tundra (trd off road). I recently found a very sturdy phone mount that clips into the air vent, made by tackform. Might be an option for your xm if the glue doesn't hold. Also, something to note with the trd dual exhaust you do gain a few hp but lose torque, since this is your new tow rig, you might want to look into a bam muffler from dirty deeds. It's dino proven to add not only hp but torque as well, and i think it is a noticeable amount. Keith at dirty deeds was great, Just give him a call if you are considering that exhaust.

@@Jan-pw4po Almost any lanolin-based product works very well. Brand prefrence should be more about smell and consistency. Some people want a more liquid protection that 'creeps' and spreads out on the metal, others like a hard wax crust, and most somewhere in-between where it will creep and flow a little to heal over time, but not drip or wash off.

You may want to add a brace for those running board supports that connects back to the frame. That way it supports the running board better and doesn't allow a twisting motion causing stress on the body of the cab. My buddy had his mounted like yours are and it ended up ripping holes out of the bottom of his cab. I have a set too but it is also connected to the frame and no problems at all....also sturdier in case you do high center it.

I drove a John Deere A with a knob on my Grand Parent's farm mid 70's. Short story the tractor wheel spun and hit my thumb nail and broke it. I appreciate the memory. Parents & Grand Parent's are gone. Greetings from a small airport in Iowa! Is it gonna snow ❄️. Must be global warming. Maybe not.

@@ritchiesokol1061 I grew up in northern Illinois. My dad had Oliver’s, my uncle had JD A,s, and the neighbor had Farmalls. Each had their strong points, but the Oliver’s with the live PTO, was hard to beat.

Just got a new truck myself this year. I went with amsoil metal protect. Lanolin based stuff. Works amazingly well. Drys to tac free finish and stays on for a number of years apparently.

Worked at a autobody center for about 10 months and that is what we used for rustproofing vehicles Dies a good job but can get a bit messy 😊

Sorry about the truck. Glad you are no worse for the ordeal. Oh nice Christmas present…👍 Got a buddy who dose auto detailing he said to use an O-zone generator on the inside of the truck overnight. He did my wife’s car after we stopped smoking and it worked great. Sure the cleaning process helped too!😬

when I do my Sportage, I leave the ozone machine running for 12 hours with Sportage sealed up. the next 6, I'll have the HVAC system in recirculate mode. change the cabin filter again. can still taste the funkiness the ozone machine produces but gets rid of the overall bleh

Again you have outdone yourself. Very impressed with your attention to detail. Your videos always leave me with greater information and the need to try new things in my shop. Would like to have more information on the rust converter you used on the frame it appears to work very well. My 2000 Ford F=250 could really benefit from this spray. Thank you for all of your informative videos will be a fan until the end. Thom

Happy new truck. Great exhaust note and nice work on the centre console and runner boards. Hoping you'll show some of the oil going on the underside when you get around to it. Sorry to hear about the accident, relieved that your ok.

Nice addition to the family I would have been very tempted to buy the old one back and use it in the winter and parked the new one in the winter

Ozone machines are pretty cheap nowadays. I bought one after buying an older Silverado from a smoker. Cleaned the truck thoroughly then ran the machine with the AC running on recirc. Shut everything off and let it sit closed up overnight. Does a great job.

Was thinking the same thing. I didn’t buy an ozone machine but had one used on my Civic that had a funky smell and it worked pretty good. Read that they tend to make plastic more brittle 🤷‍♂️

I figured out that running the ozone generator for just an hour isn't enough, running it for a day or two will do the trick though.

I love the way you're able to find the right product for the job. Is there any chance you could let us know what the name of the stuff you sprayed on the frame of your old truck was? The stuff that took care of the rust on the frame. I have a 2011 Silverado that needs a good coat of that stuff!

Steering knobs at one time was popular , But back several years ago , it seemed like 100 turns lock to lock , where most things now have very few turns lock to lock . But I agree they are nice for backing a trailer. Looks like a nice truck . My truck would need a tanker full of that spray , or maybe it needs dunked in it several times . lol

illegal here.. there where popular for semi-trucks or tractors coming from a time without power steering and giant steering wheels. Some construction vehicles may still have them- like wheel loader where you often only use one hand on the wheel

@@olik136 May be illegal in some places , but i have not found any law against them in my state . Would be interesting to see how the law is written in other states if against them . Maybe i am just missing it or something in my state.
