Just a couple of notes: -The Zurich-Bologna service was first introduced in December 2021, but was almost immediately suspended due to high covid cases in Italy and low available staff (it was not the only suspended service though, lots of trains got cancelled during December 2021-February 2022). It was later resumed on 28th February 2022. EDIT I've checked it again and actually it was suspended on 30th January 2022, therefore there were only 4 weeks without this service. -Trenitalia wound't sell you a high speed ticket from Milan to Bologna because the Zurich-Bologna service is classified as "Eurocity", which is on a lower level than high speed trains, but on the same level of the "Frecciabianca" trains. However, Frecciabianca trains stopped operating between Milan and Bologna in December 2021, and, since Trenitalia must load you on the first available train, they put you on a regional train.

Actually if you can't complete your jorney on the train you have ticket for, and it is not your fault, the service provider is obliged to get you on the train of the same category OR higher so this is BS. they can only offer downgrade the lower category will get you to your destination faster or if there is no other train. And you may still be eligable to partial refund.
@marcodamasio
@marcodamasio 2 жыл бұрын
@@mancubwwa before accusing others of saying BS check what you're saying. According to Trenitalia if your train has been cancelled you can either ask for a full refund OR to be allowed access to the first available train, and it's always up to Trenitalia to chose what train that will be.
@mancubwwa

@@marcodamasio Sorry, but the EU law states clearly that you are entiteled to contineu your journey under comparable conditions. So Trenitalia can brag what they want, but such case (downgrade when comparable service is available) would not stand in court and they (probably) know it. They just push it hoping people will easily accept it, because they are tired, distressed and don't know their rights.

@@mancubwwa jokes aside, the EU regulation states the same exact words Trenitalia reports: "Article 16 - Reimbursement and re-routing Where it is reasonably to be expected that the delay in the arrival at the final destination under the transport contract will be more than 60 minutes, the passenger shall immediately have the choice between: (a) reimbursement of the full cost of the ticket, under the conditions by which it was paid, for the part or parts of his or her journey not made and for the part or parts already made if the journey is no longer serving any purpose in relation to the passenger’s original travel plan, together with, when relevant, a return service to the first point of departure at the earliest opportunity. The payment of the reimbursement shall be made under the same conditions as the payment for compensation referred to in Article 17; or (b) [the selected option] continuation or re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to the final destination at the earliest opportunity; or (c) continuation or re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to the final destination at a later date at the passenger’s convenience." There's no detail about whether the replacing train has to be on a higher level of the replaced one.

Nobody has commented about it, but the reason the staff was yelling and "being rude" at the Milano Centrale station is because there was a risk of the glass ceiling falling down. You were probably distracted and didn't notice the warning signs and that guy simply scolded you saying you could have died and got you moving in the right direction

Having to go from one train to three must have been a real shock, especially when the third train was a downgrade. I think you took it rather well and in good spirits. The 22 car train was impressive as was the Swiss scenery. A trip to remember, to be sure.

I travelled between Basel and Bologna earlier this week by train, and it almost went entirely ok save for a delay which was then recovered. And one person travelling next to us had his train cancelled and was told by the railway company to board our train but the Italian train manager, who joined after crossing the border, forced him to pay 66 euro between chiasso and Milan

Seeing the Rock trains reminded me of my trip to visit a friend near Bologna, and to get around I mostly took those trains. Many of them are used on routes to and from the sea to the east of Bologna so every single one was completely rammed, kinda what you expect on those services in the middle of summer.

It happened to me too. Trains that suddenly don’t exist any more. For the first time, a trip from Lausanne to Rome involves a long ride to Milano and late arrival in Rome. To avoid many changes of trains, I now have to book a trip from Lausanne to Zurich and take the train to Milano the next day and continue to Rome.

The Rhone/Simplon route was affected in the same manner as the Luzern/Gotthard route. Normally, you could still take a train to Domodossola, which was the end of domestic SBB traffic and switch to Trenitalia for the rest of the run. The smart move that I would recommend is to travel to either Arth-Goldau (Gotthard) or Brig (Simplon) as both stations offer connections to trains from different routes. Arth-Goldau for the Basel-Ticino and Zurich-Ticino traffic and Brig for traffic from Lausanne or from Bern (Lotschberg).

This reminds me of several different journeys I've taken in Spain. Because of the multiple different brands of AVE, you never know if you're getting "proper" high speed, or "high-speed-for-a-regional-train-that-stops-everywhere". What should be a relatively short and straightforward journey between Valencia or Barcelona to the festival in Benicassim has often been anything but!

Giruno is actually the name given by SBB to those new high speed trains, with the design name given by Stadler being the SMILE (yes another weird and wonderful naming by Stadler). I did faced a similar experience as well. I booked a direct TGV Lyria service from Paris Gare de Lyon to Zürich Hauptbahnhof. But then the train I supposed to board was cancelled due to technical issue. So I had to rebook TGV Inoui service to Mulhouse, TER Grand Est to Basel SBB before catching SBB IR37 service to Zürich Hauptbahnhof. Making thing worse, the TER service was also delayed due to police were called to remove an unruly passenger out of the train.

Great video. I did a self planned Swiss Rail tour back in Feb 2020 from Manchester via the Channel Tunnel, Paris and Chamonix before spending 7 days riding all over Switzerland both mountains and valleys. On this route I took a local train on the old route to see more the scenery and passing through the old tunnel. Next visit I will take the base tunnel. I was delayed on the way home via Koln and Amsterdam due to a huge storm that cancelled all the trains so I had to take Flix bus for some of it and I arrived nearly 21 hours late!

I recently travels from Amsterdam to Zürich via Frankfurt with DBs ICE trains. however out of the 2 scheduled trains 4 where late. this is because the first train (Amsterdam-Frankfurt) only took me to Düsseldorf. I arrived there with 20min delay and had to find a connecting train to Frankfurt, this train arrived with 10min Delay in Frankfurt. The second train (Frankfurt-Zürich) then canceled halfway thru the journey the last two Stops (Basel SBB and Zürich HB) and I had to change in Basel Bad Bf with a 20min delay. and because the entire ICE had to use the regional train, the train had a 5min Delay in Basel SBB. there I had to change to an Inter Regio to Zürich HB)

sorry. I watched this morning & forgot to comment. That was one long, hard journey. The scenery was beautiful, but the 3 train transfer was awful. I am always impressed by the gorgeous trains you have in Europe. Your worst still puts America to shame. My worst travelling problems were when I went to Boston for my uncles funeral. A freak summer storm shut the airlines down & I was stranded overnight in Logan airport. Afraid to sleep for fear I'd miss early morning connections was my worst experience. Hope it's clear sailing from here on out.

I wonder if anyone has done a sociological study to explain why until late 20th Century a lot of the seating on European trains was in compartments, and now have a large share of seats where one faces another. By contrast in the US going way back almost all seating cars ( coaches in US ) have what reviewers call airline seating, where one never faces a stranger.

Within 30 mins of leaving Berlin encountered a delay which eventually meant missing onward connection from Cologne. Well Dylan, I really loved the Swiss bit- absolutely stunning scenery and a great train. But. oh dear, the Italian side went right down the toilet from when you crossed the border. Looks like the border police and the authorised thugs at Milano went to the same "How NOT to look after the customer" school conducted by the ghost of Mussolini. As my paternal ancestry hails from the Como area, I was looking forward to that part of the journey. Stadler really make great trains and I was quite impressed with the interiors of all three trains you sampled, despite the hard seats on one. I do hope you get to show the reverse journey from Milano back towards Lugarno one day (If you haven't already got this in your KZbin library). Thanks for sharing your experiences with us and I do hope you and your lady friend continue to enjoy sharing your travels with us. Cheers from downunder in chilly Melbourne.

A few weeks ago, I missed my Amtrak Train because the connection bus was severely delayed by over two hours. It was awful, because of it, I had to take a commuter train to my final destination. Although Amtrak is very helpful, the people at the ticket office weren't too keen on rescheduling for the evening train, because of the commuter train service that goes to the same destination as the Amtrak train I was supposed to catch. But I was lucky that it was a weekday and the commuter train service was being ran that day. The commuter trains don't run on weekends. But yeah, it sucks when the train you were scheduled to take get canceled or delayed to the point of missing a connection. But in the case with me, the connection bus was delayed and the train left on schedule. I guess the good thing is, I didn't end up having to be at the major station for 3 hours and got home much earlier.

I don't understand why the Zurich office was not able to book your place on the final segment of the trip. Normally, they can issue tickets for travel on any scheduled train. Additionally, taking the train all the way to Chiasso might have opened up additional options for travel in Italy other than the SBB-FS Tilo one, as the Trenitalia High Speed offerings may have been running from the border. I also recommend that travellers who are not pressed for time take one of the trains which run on the original route, as the scenery is much more impressive than the tunnel. That said, thanks for the video.

Went there for a football game after the Italy vs England game in September and not one person was there, either at Milan, Chiasso or in between to check my passport or whatever, shame I never got the time to explore the town, but it looked really nice. But all I found about the Italian trains that it's hectic as hell, and late trains seem to be few and far between...

Super pity they didn't put you on the highspeed train. If they would, you'd stop at Reggio Emilia AV(Reggio Emilia Highspeed) station which looks absolutely amazing too!

in italy we have 2 differet line one for hs and the other is the normal, regional trains don't transito on hs circuit due to voltage alimentation, but hs train can run in the regular line.

Dylan, you should try Vienna - Bucharest, EN347 Dacia. It could be fun, I was on the train last week and for a 07:50 minutes journey it has 6 hours delay 😂.

Not a train, but a flight from JFK to LAX with a 60 minute connection to head up to Seattle (American Airlines, then Alaska Airlines), we push back from the gate, and one of the engines didn’t start. 30 minute delay because someone forgot to plug something back in during routine maintenance. Fine. Horrible flight as the headphone jacks in all the seats on my side of the plane didn’t work (this was over 10 years ago before smartphones were everywhere). We land, I’ve still got 30 minutes to take the airside buses to a different terminal… we stop just before the gate…and nothing happens. 5 minutes later a very panicked flight attendant comes on, “There’s BEES outside teh plane, we can’t open the door!” I look out my window and see, 1 bee. Another 10 minutes, we’re being towed around to the other side of that terminal with the hope that the bees don’t follow us. ANOTHER 10 minutes we finally open the doors, by the time I’m in the American terminal, my connection was gone. It took me only 20 minutes to get to the Alaska terminal (and it was actually 2 busses), found an airline desk and they were nice enough to put me on the flight 2 hours later. Got into my hotel late, explained the bad day I was having, and the night clerk quietly upgraded my room to a small suite! Flew Delta back to JFK direct, swore to only use connections if there was no direct flight, and also never flew American again (it was the last of many issues with them.)

How much did you get back for the delay? Appalling that they out you on a regional train and also that the office in Zurich couldn't issue the reservations for the Trenitalia high speed service.

How you managed to pay only 45 euros. I am really interested about this information. For Milano to Locarno with Tilo I paid 20 euros, which in comparison with 45 you paid from Zurich to Bologna it feels a lot.

Glad that they haven't dared to put urinals on an Australian train as yet. Generally the track is so rough that the outcome would be both unpleasant and entirely predictable!!

Goodness, this happened to me once but even worse. I was supposed to be going on a direct LNER train from London to Darlington taking about 2hrs 30, well it was cancelled because of a train fault. I wasn't unhappy as apparently it was out of LNER's control, and I was transferred to the next train to Darlington, which took about an hour longer (Stopped more and longer wait at KX ovs) but then more problems as the train was supposed to swap drivers at York but the second driver was ill so the train had to terminate at York. This only came to our attention at Newark North gate so i frantically tried to book another train to take me to Darlington. The first train I could book was a cross-country train that would leave about 5 mins connection at Darlington to a Northern train to take me to Saltburn. After getting on the XC voyager it was delayed and I missed my connection at Darlington and had to wait. Not a good day!
