Paul lived directly across from me, and I eventually got to know him when I started to frequent the B Accord. A generous , kind and hospitable human being. I’d order whisky from his bar via his website, and lo and behold, he would appear at my door with my order. Got great advice and knowledge whenever I needed it regarding malt whisky.mLoved his honesty and sense of humour. One of a kind. 💯💯💯🥃🥃🥃

I had the privilege to visit the Bon several times during my first visit to Scotland last November and fell in love with the place. Saddened that I never got to meet Paul. His son seems to be doing a great job maintaining Paul's legacy.

We visited a few years back and were lucky enough to meet Paul and have a good chat. We tried the Port Charlotte Meteorite and he even gave us a couple of Ralfy glencairn glasses to take away 😁 What a lovely guy.

I got to know Paul around the early/mid 90's when he was the manager of the Burgh Bar in Paisley, one of the friendliest, kindest guys you could ever meet who always had a smile on his face. I remember going in to the Bon Accord on my stag do in 2014 and hadn't seen Big Paul in years and right away i was given a free dram and was told, all the best to you and your wife, a great tribute Ralfy to a great man. 🥃

I drank in The Pot Still and then when my work moved The Bon Accord. Disappointed that due my taste and lunchtime drinking (that’s how long ago it was) I never drank whisky in either!! Think my last regular drinking in The BA was just prior to Paul’s time there. Wish I’d met him and been a malt mate at the time!

Met Paul in the Bon Accord in 2019. A friend and I were in Glasgow for the Whisky Ambassador course and were recommended to the Bon Accord by one of the staff at the Glengoyne distillery. Unbeknown to us as we sat at the bar sampling various whiskies Paul was sat next to us. He turned to us said 'You look like a couple of lads who enjoy your whisky'. He introduced himself as Paul. Unusually there were very few people drinking whisky that evening. We then engaged in a very interesting conversation about the selection of whiskies behind the bar and we were somewhat taken back to learn that he was in fact the owner. He recommended a number of whiskies to us that we both enjoyed. I remember thinking at the time what a gent he was. He made us feel very welcome and it reminded me very of my old local - the way pubs used to be. I'm sure he will be fondly missed. For someone who's company I was in for no more than an hour, he's left a unforgettable memory to Glasgow that weekend. Legend.

Ralfy - what a wonderful , sincere , heartfelt tribute to not just a fine publican and whisky lover but to a lovely man. I had the great pleasure of often chatting to Paul whenever I dropped into the Bon when visiting Glasgow from Dundee. His enthusiasm and larger than life personality shone very brightly and he had that natural charisma that made him very special. He ran what I consider to be one of the very best pubs ( if not THE best pub ) in Scotland. I remember my first visit to the Bon around 9 years ago on a quiet weekday afternoon when I had the chance to have a good, long blether with Paul who, within an hour of first meeting him felt like a true friend. The next time I visited on my own ( some 6 months later ) he spotted me sitting quietly in the corner at the window near the end of the bar. A short while later he wandered over offering me a dram ' on the house ' asking how I was doing. When I told him I was just through for the day he seemed genuinely delighted and humbled that I had chosen to visit his pub when Glasgow offered so much choice. I continued to enjoy many other good blethers with him going forward and I chose the Bon as my No.1 Glasgow whisky and ale pub which it still is to this day. His loss has been felt far and wide I am sure - and quite rightly too. Whilst I will continue to enjoy " a conversation in a glass" in the Bon , sadly he will not be there in person but he will always be there in my thoughts.

Very well said Ralfy. I'm unable through age and distance to ever grace the bar of the Bon Accord, but your description of Paul sits nicely with a couple of Landlords mentioned by James Herriot in his stories of Pre-WW2 Yorkshire. So I'll certainly think of the atmospheric, welcoming bar once presided over by Paul and raise a dram to he and thee. Col, NZ

Regularly in the BA for the last thirty years. Maybe lonnger😮 Truly shocked when I heard Paul was unwell. Paul was the best pub manager I’d ever had the pleasure of knowing. Fellow Celtic man but that was not what he was really about. He valued all his customers and went out of his way to help anyone in his pub who had a question. Really missed by so many and that says it all.

Is there anything better than a great publican? About 4 months ago I went to the funeral to a local landlady. She left the pub soon after Covid. During Covid the staff were furloughed, but the landlady still paid them. She left the pub before the contract was up. Sadly she died too soon after. I remember a conversation with a Local a few years into her tenure, a few years before she left. About what makes a great landlord/landlady I said "I think.... You need to love people more than money..." she gave a knowing nod.. It's a lifestyle. She would easily put in 80 hour weeks on a good week. Or 100 hours on a better week. Raise a glass for the landlords and the landladies.
