Wow! This is priceless. I was only in Grade V when I was smitten with this beautiful woman. My teacher then asked us to bring a picture of a beautiful woman from a magazine. I was in Salcedo, Ilocos Sur that time, and honestly, there was no magazines yet during those period. Mabuti na lang at ang favorite tita ko na nagwo-work na noon sa Manila ay laging nag-uuwi ng mga magazines. Sa Liwayway ko nakita ang pic ni Ate Vi na pagkaganda-ganda at 'yon ang ginupit ko na pinasa ko sa teacher ko. Isa pala siyang Vilmanian at nagko-collect ng mga pics ni Ate Vi. Ang puso ko ang nagdikta na mahalin at idolohin ko si Ate Vi, na sinamahan ng aking utak. Uso na noon ang parunggitan ng mga Vilmanians at Noranians pero silent lang ako. Natutuwa ako sa mga nagtatanggol kay Ate Vi. I was already in Grade Vi ng magsabunutan ang dalawa kong kaklase sa garden. Putik kung putik, wala silang pakialam. Noong high school naman, nasa 4th year na ako ng nagbatuhan ang mga girls ng mga gamit nila because of Ate Vi and te Guy. Noong January 1978, nakasama ako sa mga matatalino kong kaklase na kumuha ng scholarship exam sa Vigan, Ilocos Sur, na almost one hour ang biyahe sa lugar namin. Pagkatapos ng exam ay nanood kami ng Burlesk Queen sa isang malaking theater sa sentro ng Vigan. At 15 ay nakapasok kami dahil malakas ang teacher namin doon na isa ring Vilmanian. Sa sobrang dami ng nanood ay nakatayo kaming lahat. Ang teacher lang namin noon ang binigyan ng silya. Hindi ko alam pero nagagalit at naiinis ako noong nagsayaw na si Ate Vi na naka-two piece. Pagkatapos naming nanood ay nagsalita 'yong Valedictorian naming lalaki ng, "Ang ganda ng istorya, ang ganda ni Vilma, ang galing niyang umarte." Napangiti ako lalo na ng sinegundahan siya ng teacher namin. I was already in college sa Maynila ng lahat ng pelikula ni Ate Vi that year ay pinag-ipunan ko. Lumiliban ako sa pagkain at naglalakad from Kalentong in Mandaluyong to Recto, makaipon lang ako ng pampanood. Hindi lang kasi isa o dalawang beses kong inuulit panoorin ang mga pelikula niya. Una kong napanood na movie niya when I was already in Manila ay ang Pagputi ng Uwak, Pag-itim ng Tagak. Nakailang ulit kong pinanood dahil sa ganda ng pelikula. Ganun din ang Kampus, Disco Fever, Pag-ibig Ko sa Iyo Lang Ibibigay, Ikaw ay Akin, at Rubia Servios Case No. 63572. Pumalakpak ako ng husto sa kanya sa Ikaw ay Akin. Napakagaling niya sa pelikulang 'yon. Sa Rubia Servios ko naman siya unang nakita noong MMFF '78. Isa ako sa humabol-habol sa karosa na sinakyan nila nina Mat Ranillo III at Philip Salvador. Hindi ko talaga inaalis ang tingin ko sa mukha niyang mala-anghel. Umuwi ako noon ng bahay na nakalutang. Char! Nasa Ilocos na ako ng mabalitaan ko ang nangyari sa awards night. Pinagkaisahan nila si Ate Vi. Nalungkot ako lalo na ng mabasa ko na nasaktan ng husto ang damdamin ng idolo ko. Ngunit ng ginawa niya ang Karma at nanalo siya ng Best Actress award sa MMFF '81, doon na nagkasunod-sunod ang good karma sa career niya. The following year, 1979, ay ganun din, wala akong pinalampas na pelikula niya. Ilang beses kong pinapanood ang mga ito at nagbabantay pa ako sa mga sinehan, lalo na noon sa Gotesco, Miramar, at Maxim. Ewan ko pero tuwang-tuwa ako noon pag napakahaba ng pila ng kanyang mga pelikula lalo na pag ang pumipila ay mga lalaki't babae na nakauniporme ng puti. Naging silent Vilmanian talaga ako hanggang noong 1983, during the awards season ay umabot hanggang langit ang tuwa ko ng makuha lahat ni Ate Vi ang lahat ng Best Actress Award sa lahat ng award giving bodies that time. Una sa Gawad URIAN. I was there sa Manila Film Center ng doon ganapin ang awards night. Wala si Vilma. Nasa Celebrity Sports Plaza (22.9 kms away from the Manila Film Center at 34 minutes takbuhin ng sasakyan pag walang traffic) kung saan ginawaran siyang 1982 Box Office Queen kasama si Fernando Poe, Jr. as Box Office King ng Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation o GMMSF. Nang oras na para tawagin ang mga nominado para sa Best Actress ay napausal ako ng dasal at pinagtalikop ang dalawang palad ko. Obviously, si Vilma Santos ang gusto kong manalo sa apat na nominado na kabilang sina Gina Alajar (Moral), Nora Aunor (Himala), at Lorna Tolentino (Moral). Nang tawagin ang pangalan ni Vilma as winner ay napatalon ako sa tuwa at sumabay sa mga nagpalakpakan. Hindi si Vilma ang tumanggap ng trophy pero naulinigan kong may nagsabi na darating daw kaya naghintay ako. Naibigay na ang trophy para sa mga nanalo ng Best Director (Peque Gallaga) at Best Picture (Oro, Plata, Mata) ngunit wala pa si Vilma. Noong pauwi na ako at malapit na sa pintuan ay may mga humahangos na parating. a) May nakawalang leon. b) May coup d'etat. c) May kilalang celebrity na dumating. Yes, may kilalang celebrity na dumating. Si Vilma at ang grupo niya. Ang ganda niya sa suot niyang itim na gown na may nakapalibot na kulay puti sa neckline. Dumaan sa harap ko taglay ang kanyang ngiting nakakawala ng pagkabagot. Bumaba na rin ako (hanggang kalahati lang naman ng teatro) at pinanood ang picture taking ng mga nanalo na kasama siya. Two birds in one stone. Box Office Queen na, Best Actress pa sa isang gabing ginawa ng Diyos... kaya di na nakapagpalit pa ng gown ang reyna. Only Vilma can do that. Yes! Only Vilma can... Paglabas ko ng Manila Film Center ay napakaliwanag ng paligid. Tumingin ako sa kalangitan at doon ay napagmasdan ko ang napakaraming bituing kumukutikutitap... nagkikislapan... na para bang nakikipagdiwang sa natamong tagumpay ng Nag-iisang Bituin na ang kislap ay nananatiling maningning hanggang sa kasalukuyang panahon. - Marlo Santos
