Currently the closest thing we have to a Kapustin documentary is the book "Conversations with Nikolai Kapustin" written by Yana Tyulkova. It's basically a series of interviews that serves as Kapustin's biography, and I'd say it's quite a detailed one. Kapustin described so many of his experiences quite vividly in the book, it's quite amazing how he recalled so much of his early life while being really old then xd (the interviews were recorded in early 2018)

the pastoral (no. 6) was the first one I heard, and the first piece that got me into Kapustin. still one of my favorite pieces by him, the entire set of etudes is absolutely mindblowing

They almost sound more like jazz fusion than classical. These pieces are wild!

_«Kapustin regarded himself as a composer rather than a jazz musician:_ *_"I was never a jazz musician. I never tried to be a real jazz pianist, but I had to do it because of the composing. I'm not interested in improvisation - and what is a jazz musician without improvisation? All my improvisations are written, of course, and they became much better; it improved them."»_*

To me, it sounds as if Scriabin has completely hit the jazz...and was a little more down-to-earth.

Something you can really bop your head to is Kapustin op.118

I discovered this guy about ten years ago and for about a month he was all I listened to. There certainly wasn't another Russian who played anything like him, and few of any nationality came close.

fun fact: the sheet music in the video was hand written by kapustin, he was known for very neat scores (by the way these were performed by kapustin himself lol)

You can see very slight differences in each note, slur, bracket, 8va dotted lines, etc..

The sheet music doesn't look handwritten at all. Looks just like any other professionaly engraved and published score.

With Soviet composers, my sense is that interest in jazz began to grow toward the end of the Soviet period and that explains the influence. Alfred Schnittke is another Soviet composer who incorporated jazz elements but in a very different way. As far as modern piano music goes, I recommend you listen to Ligeti's Piano Etudes. Particularly Yuja Wang playing l'Escalier du diable and Fanfares. They're rhythmally very complex but also very fun to listen to and have jazz-derived elements.

I don't know if there are any docs of Kasputin? I'd like to see one too. I know he played in various Soviet era jazz groups and big bands. It would be an interesting documentary.

To me, these pieces are a combination of jazz, classical and retro video game music (like Sonic / Mario kinda). My favorite composer at the moment as well!
@hoon_sol Жыл бұрын
It's only a combination of jazz and classical; it's just that the video game music you mention is also exactly that. Not that I haven't thought it myself: the entire set of concert etudes would be perfect for video games of that sort.

Try Gioachino Rossini. For example, his overtures "William Tell" (1829) or "La Gazza Ladra" (1817).

What's astonishing about his scores is that he managed to find a notation for music that sounds improvised, but is not.

Hi Gidi, try to listen Ravel Gaspard de la nuit (and before read about the story of this suite), or Kapustin's other pieces like Sinfonietta op.49, Sunrise op. 26, Variations op. 41, Improvviso op. 66 n. 2 or Bach - Busoni Ciaccona (Chaconne).
