1971 would turn into a banner year for legendary Texan Lee Trevino, beginning with the U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club, where he defeated Jack Nicklaus in a playoff. It was Trevino's second U.S. Open victory. Here's his story. In partnership with Rolex.

The best ball striker other than Ben Hogan to ever play on the PGA Tour. When he hit the ball it sounded different somehow. He also had guts. Growing up the way that he did, when he got the lead, he was damn tough to beat, unlike so many of the chokers who can't stand the pressure.

I loved that roundhouse style with the hips. Beautiful to watch. You don't see swings like that today. I think it was probably Lee's confidence and mental toughness that often gave him the edge though. That's where the humour came from.

KZbin does a great job exposing the public, some of which may have never watched Lee Trevino play on television or in person. That said, seeing what happens on broadcast TV is simply a portion of what actually happens, and watching Lee in person is again a different and greater dimension. I lived in Memphis for many years and always got tickets to "The Classic" and followed Lee. An example of watching Lee was, in 1977 at the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic Pro-Am, President Gerald Ford (who always played with Lee Trevino in the Pro-Am) stepped up to the T-Box on the 5th hole and hit a hole-in-one. Words cannot describe the eruption of the crowd. Today, there is a boulder next to that T-Box with a bronze plaque stating "the shot heard round the world". As always, Lee was forever the tip of the spear when it came to major activity in golf. The major issue surrounding that event was ... President Ford was a substandard golfer in every respect, but he was a very good President who had taken the Presidency, without election, from Richard Nixon and WE THE PEOPLE loved him for his integrity. Ford commanded great respect, but on that day, the greatest golf day of his life, Lee hazed him (politely and in a manner perpetuating the achievement) which Ford accepted and enjoyed. Lee is likely the only person on earth who could pull that off. In El Paso Lee Trevino is beyond legendary. There are simply too many Lee stories to attempt giving them justice in writing. Lee was once asked, "how do you deal with the pressure of standing over a putt worth $200,000 in prize money (1977). Lee responded, "that's not pressure, pressure is when you've bet a man on a driving range practice green $10 that you can sink a putt using just the shaft of a putter taped to a Dr. Pepper bottle ... and you don't have the $10 to lose.
