He's no one hit wonder, although this is certainly his biggest song. Linda Ronstad covered some of his work, like Poor Poor Pitiful Me. Other notable songs include Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, Exitable Boy, Desperados Under the Eaves, My Shit's Fucked Up (a funny song about dying from cancer), Hasten Down The Wind, Carmelita, Splendid Isolation,...

It’s a song about sharp dressing English ladies’ men who would pick up girls in a particular area of London. He’s warning innocent young girls to beware. Warren was a classically trained pianist and musical genius whose eclectic songs ran the gamut from this type of humor to deeply sad ones. He was admittedly not for everyone’s taste, but with a modicum of open mindedness he can appreciated for the incredible songwriter and entertainer he was. He was the most featured musical guest ever on the Letterman Show and Dave’s musical hero. He appeared there shortly before his death upon the release of his final brilliant album, The Wind, openly discussing with great humor the short time he had left to live. When Dave asked him to give advice about life in light of his circumstance, his response was “enjoy every sandwich.” Check out his Lawyers, Guns and Money, Excitable Boy, I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead and Keep Me in Your Heart (from The Wind) for starters. I’m sure you’ll “get him” by then.

Warren Zevon is on Bob Dylan’s list of six best American songwriters. His catalogue is humongous. Just on the album where you find Werewolves, you also have Excitable Boy (caution, humorously describes a date the goes awry in the most gruesome way), Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner (about a mercenary who kept fighting even after having his head blown off), Lawyers, Guns, and Money (the danger of dabbling in Cold War politics while on vacation), and Nighttime in the Switching Yard. His songs were covered by many other artists. He was friends with all the LA Laurel Canyon crowd. So you’ll find on this track alone is backed up by John McVie and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac. Other collaborators include Linda Ronstead, Jackson Brown, and REM (who Warren made an album with under the name of Hindu Love Gods). Once Warren gets under your skin, you’ll realize how simplistic and boring most songwriters are. 😉

When they were recording this song they were struggling with the rhythm. They got a few session musicians in to try to get it happening but it wasn’t coming together. Fleetwood Mac were recording nearby and they asked Mick Fleetwood and John McVie to lay down the drums and bass guitar and it just all fell into place. If you have a listen to that song again, hear how solid that rhythm section is, and how cool John’s basslines are in it. There’s a real swagger to it all that comes from years of playing in the pocket with each other. A good example of stuff that you can’t get as a solo musician in a DAW at home.

Warren Zevon has a really deep catalogue of music "Play it all Night Long, Mohamed's Radio, Excitable Boy, The Envoy, and the Next Best Thing are some of the great songs by him but I think my favorite is a song called Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner know that is one you should review.

So; Lon Chaney was not only an actor but a makeup artist as well. He was known as 'The Man of a Thousand Faces' and had appeared as The Phantom of the Opera as an as the Wolfman. Chaney Jr. Was his son; of course, but he only played as the Wolfman during the horror movies of the 40s. He was also in the comedy; Abbott and Costello meet Dracula, with Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. Karloff, who was a week known Frankenstein's Monster actor. Everyone thinks of the Chaney family when it comes to werewolves

Lon Chaney was a famous actor/make up artist who, indeed starred in some horror films, notably as Quasimodo in the 1920s silent version of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". His son, Lon Chaney Jr. followed in his footsteps and actually played the werewolf in Universal Picture's "The Wolf Man".

Your next Zevon reaction should be “Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner” . I saw him perform 4 times and met him before and after each show . What a charming guy. We talked quite a bit .The man was a genius … he has about 100 songs you need to react to . “Carmelita” … “Trouble Waiting To Happen” … ( yes he signed my Rolling Stone magazine . ) “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” … I literally don’t know how to tell you where to begin . “Desperados Under The Eaves” ? The entire “Excitable Boy” album (1978) would be a good start … then his self titled LP (1976). Far from a 1 hit wonder … the joke was how much he hated “Werewolves…” it (sort of) overshadowed his amazing catalog but brought such instant mainstream fame . “The Envoy” … “Sentimental Hygiene “ Play “Detox Mansion” … or “It Ain’t That Pretty At All” … “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” or ‘Veracruz”. I usually don’t go in for LIVE albums … but Warrens “Stand In The Fire “ LP is a rare exception .BTW… the R&RHOF is a joke . Enjoy every sandwich guys ! RIP WZ 🎸🙏

Zevon was far from a one hit wonder, but most of his really good stuff didn't chart. In some live versions, he sings, "Better stay away from him, he'll rip your lungs out, Jim // I'd like to meet James Taylor." Referring to the singer James Taylor who'd also be a good one for you to check out.

Warren Zevon has dozens of great songs. There are at least 5 songs on the Excitable Boy album (the album that has Werewolves on it) that are better songs that this. Reactors seem to hit this song and don't explore any deeper. His self titled album (album previous to Excitable Boy) also has 5-6 great songs. Warren basically thought of Werewolves as a novelty song. Do yourself a favor and dig deeper. There are a lot of good suggestions from other responders in the comments
