Shiz University is a practical set! The background is enhanced by CGI but they build everything including the canal in London

We nees more live-action high fantasy musicals (not just remakes), so I hope these films start it!
@rjenyawd5 ай бұрын
Practical effects! Lol. And actually, a large majority of the film IS practical. The director specifically said he wanted to limit CGI use and green screen work. The vast majority of the film is custom built and detailed sets. (Including the poppy field, munchkin land, and shiz university (moat and all.) Cgi was only used to fill out some of the more expansive background and horizon shots, and to augment the puppetry and other practical effects.

In the books the Animals(that speak) are basically regular animals but they can stand and some of them wear clothes and entered society before the wizard kicked them out and basically killed or enslaved them. I’m not sure where they are going with Dr.Dillamond being a regular goat but I always thought it was cool because it meant that the Lion could actually be a Lion.
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch5 ай бұрын
Ahhhh I see what you mean. I was thinking more in the vein of werewolves I guess but not actual shifting 😂 like humanoid animals Vs regular animals having human intelligence.

Anyone who’s seen the musical, knows this trailer is showing the majority of scenes from Part 1, of the story. Yes. The hat in water can be part of 1 and 2. I agree: Elphabas hand on Fiyero appears to be when they release the Lion and is touching his scar; the scar the Lion gave him.
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch5 ай бұрын
Ohhhh the idea that she's touching the scar makes so much more sense to me than just awkwardly stroking his face LMAO. But yeah I totally agree with you!

Majority of the movie are actual practical effects and built sets. John Cho wants the world and the movie to be respectable to the stage show as much as possible. The CGI only comes in where they need to, such as not pushing Cynthia Erivo out the window to the fly around a tower. But there will be closer shots of her flying that is still practical effects (there’s behind the scenes footage out there)

@Calxiyn The wide shot of the School Grounds may be CG. I wouldn't put it past them. But also it COULD be a Miniature. Or depending on the size of the model it could be, as WETA Digital calls them, a Bigature. If it is a Miniature or a Bigature, that could explain why it looks more real than most CG... because it is. Also, I, too, am more of a fan of Practical Effects than CGI. So do hope that wide shot is a Miniature or a Bigature. Also also, having not seen the Stage Production, I can only speak from what I see in the trailer, but it appears to me that Galinda comes from either a lot of money, royalty, or both. She does mention to have asked for and expected a Private Suite. That screams privileged and entitled to me. The way she acts also is reminiscent of someone who is used to getting what they want and, usually, has the means to get what they want. Which, if that's the case, would explain her wearing whatever the heck she wants, Dress Code be damned. As far as the Movie Titles are concerned, I heard it's going to be "Wicked" and "Wicked Part 2." Yeah... kinda uninspired. But eh... it's Hollywood. Lastly, if you have time and feel so inclined, so should check out "Team Starkid" on KZbin. They are a Production Company that specializes in, what they call, "Accessible Musical Theater." What that means is that they produce musicals and charge for live tickets like any other musical, but they record their musicals and put them on their KZbin Channel so everyone can see them. They are primarily crowd-funded so they retain full creative control of their projects. The reason I bring them up is because they did a musical a while back called "Twisted." I think you'd like it. They, basically, took "Wicked" and applied it to "Aladdin." So, yes, Ja'Far is the good guy. It's also a tongue-in-cheek socio-political commentary on the status of Disney at the time they wrote the musical. Fair Warning: "Team Starkid" is exclusively Adult. Mostly for language and themes. One of their Founding Members is AJ Holmes who was Elder Cunningham in Book of Mormon for a while. Another Founding Member is Darren Criss who was on GLEE and starred in Hedwig And The Angry Inch (The Musical, not The Movie). Also, in their last musical that they just released at the end of last year, Will Branner from Back To The Future The Musical was their Main Villain. They also have many former and current members who have gone on to do Broadway and Off-Broadway so they're pretty legit. Anyway, great breakdown and analysis! Here's hoping the movie matches or exceeds the trailer!

Lucky for you, Ariana Grande has a musical theater background. (Also, it took awhile for you to quiet down on the shrill factor, though NO analysis of the music whatsoever?)
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch5 ай бұрын
Your obvious rudeness aside: they didn’t showcase enough music in the trailer to do any sort of analysis beyond talking about the brief vocal performances we heard or leitmotifs (which uh… I did?). And there are no lyric changes so nothing on that front either. The other thing is - some of this music may have been made just to suit the trailer. Like the “Popular” we heard had absolutely no backing instrumental. I do breakdowns of fully released songs, to really compare the movie versions to the broadway version we’ll have to wait until it’s out.

It’s also a little hard to tell since we don’t have the full thing with the proper instrumental etc. Like we’re basically just getting chunks of people’s voices so for now I’m not too concerned about the sound, cause it’s all designed for the trailer.

@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Yeah I definitely do want to be optimistic, just basing off certain choices made in other stage-to-musical adaptations I've seen eg the way just can't wait to be king in tlk 2019 was changed from very full of character to a 'perfect' performance by a pop singer. I am really excited to see the story done in a cinematic way on screen, I just *hope* that everything that was great about the original is preserved here too
