@@sebbydaking1014 A LOT of people do a single computer science degree. You're right in that you can always just drop one part if you do a double - in fact thats what a lot of my friends ended up doing, they were doing commerce + computer science and ended up dropping commerce within the first year

Hey man, I am considering transferring to UNSW in term 3. I am a first year USYD student and while it is alright, I believe the culture at UNSW seems more vibrant and many of my friends were going there (barely any went to USYD). It was my first preference initially for a bachelor of psychology (using this as premed). I picked USYD over UNSW initially since I thought it would be more convenient for me to get there but only now did I realise that they are only like 10 minutes apart, but it was too late. They are not too different in quality of education in psychology I heard. Usyd has been alright so far and I have met some friends in here but I am constantly thinking of switching in term 3. Is it easy for a transfer student to make friends? I also have major FOMO since I felt that I missed the critical period of meeting people such as O-week, camps and in general the first 2 terms so I am scared everyone would already have groups of friends by then. Also is it worth transferring?
@VictorFang
@VictorFang 2 жыл бұрын
Making friends all depends on the effort you give it. I personally think it makes zero difference whether you're a transfer student or not. You're right in that there are a lot of fun social events during O-week and first term but societies run events all throughout the year and I'm sure you'll make friends by attending them. You can also be on closer terms with people if you end up joining a society subcommittee instead of just attending events. Transferring is a big decision weighted on several factors and I can't give you a straight answer without knowing more. I think both universities are great and if it's JUST for social reasons or making friends, I think it's doable at either uni

Having no programming experience is 100% fine and most of the cohort will be similar. That's a good question and many people wonder it too. The co-op scholarship gives and requires you to do 6 month long placements at a specific handful of companies. Hey Victor awesome video 👌 very helpful! Do you reken its more important to make connection during your compsci course or focus on grades? Like when you applied for interns, are they focused more on outside activities more or GPA? Also, does the students or staff at UNSW have connections to tech companies in Sydney? I am a big introverted person, and Im worried about not being able to make friends, and have it affect me career wise after or near graduation 😔 Thanks for the video and keep it up!
@VictorFang
@VictorFang 2 жыл бұрын
Learning and understanding the concepts and content is important - grades, not so much. I think meeting people and making good friends with those in your cohort is more important as it can help you in many aspects from asking for course help to applying for jobs and internships. A lot of introverted people do well in tech and interviews are usually less reliant on people skills compared with other jobs (although people skills are still important). Being introverted doesn't mean that you can't make friends tho and I'd still encourage you to try your best to step outside of your comfort zone to meet new people (for eg at CSEsoc first year camp)! Don't worry CS has a lot of introverted people so it's not too bad 😅

Or do Is it necessary to have a software engineering degree for those jobs. Also, if doing a double degree with actuarial studies, do you think it is good to do that too for possible better employment opportunities? Thanks a lot for this video!

Yep the most direct and straightforward job for a CS graduate is being a software engineer. Software engineering and CS are two very very similar degrees, in fact in most other countries there's just CS there's no software engineering. I'd do it with actuarial studied if I actually enjoyed it. There's a lot of additional math, stats and theory in actuarial but the knowledge might help you with entry to insurance companies (if that's of interest)
