I'm with you Mic! Whole Foods plant based is 98% of what I eat in a month with a tiny bit of vegan junk food. I had 2 strokes at 39 and was put on warfarin and aspirin, cholesterol meds and blood pressure was borderline hypertensive. 2 years later was hospitalized again for severe atherosclerosis and I had enough! I saw Forks Over Knives and followed Dr Esselstyn's recommendations. I'm 2 years vegan, off warfarin and cholesterol meds, my blood pressure is 110/65, my cholesterol is 116 and I dropped 65 pounds. I needed to have all the information to have this success, if I followed Unnatural Vegan I would not have been able to heal my arteries!

Yeah, I am glad she participated. I feel that UV feels like a more sane place to find a friendly voice for new vegans in my case I was confronted by large organic only fruit mono-meals as being the way to go. I lumped that along with the idea of whole foods as a nebulously defined concept with questionable return on investment. I have gotten over feeling that way and now that I understand the whole food definition and several of the concepts behind it I feel like UV would rather get her health information from sources that reiterate commonly held beliefs, anything that is seen and understood by vegans only is not acknowledged by her. I would totally eat a GMO apple but I am not going to be eating a bunch of mock meats, maybe try them once if they are in the discount bin.

Nordik Totally agree. Let your information speak for itself Mic. If you get too defensive it dilutes the message & diverts from the greatness of what you offer from your research & your own experience. Much better to give brief, scientific response & move on quickly, ignoring much of what is said or implied. Like abusive & toxic relationships the attacker saps your focus & energy by putting you on the defense - often referred to as being an emotional vampire. Don't let her comments determine your focus. Another good one Mic. My own example from blood work is that after being borderline anemic for most of my life, my blood tests as a vegan show ABUNDANT levels of iron in my bloodstream. "But where will you get your protein and IRON if you don't eat meat???" Uh, from ... plants ... just like cows, pigs, gorillas, monkeys, and every other herbivore on the planet! Nailed it in the "drama" section too. U.V. just doesn't get it for some reason, some kind of mental block there. Keep up the great work!

I barely even know Unnatural Vegan but have seen a few of her more recent videos now and it quickly becomes clear that she just doesn't feel comfortable with people striving to eat healthily. Imo (and I tend to be a good reader of people) she screams insecurity. And after watching a video of her's the other day where she mentioned the fact that she used to make herself sick after eating, that just backed up the hunch I had a little more. To me, she's had some bad experiences with diet and/or bad relationships with food and now she's wary of anything that seems too health-conscious and would rather encourage everyone to glug some oil and throw back the supplements, lest we should all become orthorexics, driven to insanity as our clean-eating obsessions consume us! There's other annoying traits (such as this know-it-all air others have detected too and the way she descredits anyone who gives nutritional advice but isn't a medical profession - and even then only one of her choosing that she likes and supports it would seem!) but that's probably the most obvious one that seems to be on-going according to those more familiar with her. I honestly hope she just drops it now and doesn't bother responding to Mic because it would just be so pointless. I find it rather pathetic...

plants are such a huge health supply for the blood. a couple of years ago, even while I was still very high whole plant foods, I still had a couple ounces of meat per day and maybe a little cheese. No milk at home, but if something was made at a restaurant that I ordered that had milk or cream in it I still ordered it. Exercising was walking and moderate weight training. Cholesterol was 304, 302, and 306 spread out over a couple of years. My HDL did hang around 65, probably due to the weight training. Last Friday my results were lower than I had ever seen my entire life, in my 40's now. Even with working out and walking less BUT I never order anything with animal products in it. If there is some in a meal from a restaurant I wouldn't know it and I doubt the waitstaff would. I mean who knows if some part of some marinade that gets used might have Worcester Shire Sauce or some other sauce like that in it. Anyhow, from what I can easily control, no animal foods at all. No dairy, cheese, or meat even though those were low compared to the average diet. Perhaps then I get 0.25% of my food from animal products but the 99.75% that I can control - nope, all plants for me. Cholesterol last week: 183 (and I am sure will still come down more as I eat so clean) So even cutting out the little animal products that I did made a huge difference. That huge drop came with being less physically active (no good gym here and the weather is sporadic) but I still try to walk and use dumbbells at home. High carb, high fiber, tons of fruit and veg. Some raw, some cooked, lots of great spices. I love it. Everything tastes great and I don't miss meat, milk or cheese at all but I also wasn't a huge eater of it before. Whether or not people care about animals we all want a longer or at least a healthy life until we drop dead so eat plants people! If you eat plants for the health of it, the environment is better off and animal welfare is better off. If you eat plants for the environment, then animal welfare is better off and your health is better off. If you eat plants for animal welfare, your health is better off and the environment is better off. Or, do it for all three reasons. Any reason is a good one as all three primary key reasons to be vegan will benefit. Oh, and +1 Mic. Love the videos and thanks for sharing the blood work. Those are good to show people now so they can see.
@UncleJ2058

That is the problem with eating "just a little" animal food. Dietary cholesterol does not raise cholesterol much but only if you already are eating a lot of meat, dairy and eggs and your cholesterol level is already high. If you are vegan and you eat some animal product it will cause your cholesterol level to spike.
@mjs28s
@mjs28s 7 жыл бұрын
I always ate meat, dairy and eggs. I wasn't a vegan that added meat for awhile, which is why my cholesterol has been well over 250 since I was an early teenager. When my cholesterol was over 300 a few years ago I was already eating far less garbage and lbs per day more plant foods.

It is the Nutritional side of things that has been powering the movement over the last decade.

I'm like look lady, confirming people's bias on bad science isn't real science. I think it's dangerous that she confirms false "facts" that mostly serve corporate capitalism, and do nothing in reality for science, the environment or veganism. It's one thing to drag in the sheeple who are intimidated by how free thinking or non-conforming many vegans in the spotlight are, it's entirely another to spread misinformation.

I love research and science as opposed to simply anecdotal evidence. Awesome. Love it. ... Also loved the rebuttal/rant at the end. Way to keep it classy 😉

I think eating processed vegan foods is fine from time to time, but they shouldn't be included as part of regular vegan diet. It's unhealthy (the added folic acid for one thing is carcinogenic) in many ways and very expensive. What happens is many of newly converted vegans eat that way thinking it's healthy, until they get sick from "vegan diet" and renounce vegan diet altogether. Whole food vegan diet is the way to go and it's what all vegans should strive for. Not suggesting we all have to be perfect in that sense all of the time, but that we shouldn't be promoting a processed foods vegan diet as "healthy" or even sufficient because it's neither.

As vegans, I think it's important for us to recommend that people get their blood tested if possible before becoming vegan. Years ago, I was severely deficient in iron, B12 and vitamin D. That was back when I used to eat plenty of meat, dairy and eggs every single day. I got lucky that I had my blood tested before I became vegan otherwise some ignorant medical doctor would have blamed my vegan diet. The typical standard American diet is massively nutritionally deficient. For this reason, I recommend that everyone get their blood tested before they go vegan.

You're starting to become my favorite youtuber. Or at least on par with NutritionFacts. Many vegan channels are either a bit too obnoxiously bashing (like vegan gains) or really mild and peacey against criticism. You seem to have the perfect ratio down. No nonsensical insults, maybe a few jokes that only make yourself look a bit silly (:D), but just logic reasoning. Love it.

When I first started a plant-based (vegan) diet last summer (coming from a vegetarian diet), I consumed a lot of vegan KZbin vids. Unnatural Vegan was one of them. I became disheartened by her negativity and criticisms of things that were bound in science. Because, science. I then decided I would no longer follow her. She wasn't the only one that was dragging things down...lots of vegan drama out there...but she just rubbed me the wrong way. Sorry she feels the need to put on her tiara and bash you, Mic (Mike?) it's unfortunate. I understand your need to defend yourself. Hopefully she will tone it down and focus on more positive topics. BTW, I say plant-based because I am in it for my health. The ethics surrounding it is a great side effect. ;-)

"lots of vegan drama out there" There's so much drama because veganism does attract a lot of emotionally charged people. C'mon, there's a reason why vegans have the reputation they do. Born-again people are often kinda preachy (exercise, religion, diet, whatever). This is the first video of this guy I've seen and it's a good video. It's the least preachy/annoying/condescending video I've come across from a vegan with lots of followers. I'm far more likely to watch more of this guy's videos than any of the larger vegan channels I've come across because he seems more level headed. Then again, maybe I've hit on something. Most of the larger vegan channels are kinda douchey so I guess that's what sells. Vegan Gains is obviously down for fighting, and That Vegan Couple are hopelessly condescending whilst wearing smiles and promoting positivity. It's hard for people to accept vegans because its just a fact that too many of them are annoying assholes.

I dont really get why you are both critiquing each other. Both your diets are appealing for different reasons and she tried to say in her follow up that she doesn't think whole food vegan diets are bad... just when they are promoted as being absolutes that they become 'crazy' and a turn off (which for me is true). I personally don't think that you are an example of this thus why i follow you and trust your advice. That being said your suggestions can be hard to get and very specific... usually being the more expensive whole foods. Yes i can order in bulk to make it cheaper but thats still forking out a big amount at one time to have it posted (which is hard enough to get done right in an apartment like mine in Australia). Anyway. I hope one of you holds up the white flag at some point because your both the sane part of vegan youtube and i think its more efficient for you to collaborate then argue who is the better source of information and protect your street rep. I come to you guys to get away from all that.

Not trying to start anything mic,I’m just unsure if you know this or not but albumin is not a protein that effects muscle growth or development. Having more of it in your blood means you might have healthy blood pressure. That’s the purpose of albumin to regulate blood pressure. Not build muscle. It’s like comparing having more protein in your hair than a meat eater. Blood, muscle, skin, and hair are all made up of proteins. But different kinds. Great vid btw: I appreciate your love of science as I too am working towards my masters degree in marine biology.

I've been a fan of yours from the beginning. You are easily one of my favourite vegan channels on KZbin. Watched her video while eating popcorn and laughed at the ridiculously idiotic things she said. As a vegan advocate myself (I cohost and edit at an animal advocacy radio station in my home town.), i can tell you that advocating for health is the #1 reason people first turn to veganism. Once they learn the ethical side, they stay vegan for life. So her channel of the "correct" way to be an advocate is so stupid. There is no right way to do anything.

Yeah, that's the one claim I regrettably didn't cover. The idea that people don't care about their health is ridiculous and clearly just her own belief. The problem is, 75-95% of people think they eat healthy already (www.livescience.com/10389-big-fat-disconnect-90-diets-healthy.html) so they don't have the motivation to change. Obviously this is incorrect and I hate to be doing shock journalism, but part of my job is to let people know that what they eat is not in fact healthy. I like to think we have an ecosystem of vegan advocacy. She wants a monoculture.

I am currently working on my MS in nutrition and my RD coursework, and I'm taking a course on micronutrient metabolism, and my professor was saying that a lot of the blood work that shows micronutrient testing is inherently flawed because it only shows a static measure of levels.... so basically it only shows you a short term snapshot of your vitamin status. so if you took a B12 supplement before your test for example, your B12 would be elevated because it's been recently absorbed into your blood stream and is still in circulation. A test like that wouldn't always tell you if you were deficient or if that nutrient was properly absorbed or being utilized. Instead you would need a functional measure of vitamin status (such as dim light vision tests for vit. A status) that would prove that the processes that depend on that vitamin are working optimally--- these in some cases can be tricky, invasive, and expensive. I was wondering if this is something you have looked into at all or perhaps this would be a good topic for a video since a lot of vegans rely on tests like this to justify the lifestyle..... in the past I have waived mine around proudly when people question my health status as a long term vegan, but now I'm not so sure if that's a reliable measure. thoughts??

I think it's very interesting that at 8:44 the other KZbinr suggests following advice of professionals however dismisses the fact that many medical professionals suggest a yearly blood test to accompany one's physical... source: I have my blood test done yearly when visiting the women's doctor upon their recommendation... They recommend a comprehensive testing that includes vitamin and mineral testing... and it's standard practice at their office-- sorry if this is TMI -- I just don't understand what sort of professionals the other KZbinr is mentioning? An expensive dietitian? How is that practical or cheap? Or NutrionFacts.org -- that's both professional and free advice -- but oh wait, she doesn't like him for some reason? -- It's confusing...

I thought the exact same thing about her promoting processed foods cause it's cheaper.. how?? In which world does she live in? I'd buy one vegan salami/steak/sausage/burger for 3-4 € depending on the brand and it would last me one freaking meal, and it's just pure sh*t. If I buy 1 pound of chia seeds/flax I pay for it around 3 or 4 € but it would last me 1 month or more. As other people said, it's not fair of her to misrepresent data and scare people into eating bad diets. She keeps on saying how most people would be discouraged from veganism because of whole food plant based diet.. but is she forgetting the audience that does want to eat like that? Perhaps she convinced some people into giving up the whole food diet because they were scared they wouldn't get enough of nutrients. I almost bought it myself, because I want to do what's best for my body and if somebody throws around claims that it's dangerous or crazy eating whole foods, then I could even believe it and eat processed. Thankfully I researched it before believing it, but not everyone does that. She bases everything around her. She thinks that just because she can't "live" without eating processed foods and drinking plant milks that everyone is like that. What if I don't want to drink plant milks? Oh then you MUST take a supplement! Or you will become deficient in calcium. Nonsense.

In a recent video “Am I fat? Is being fat bad for veganism?”, *Swayze took Dr. McDougall completely out of context* and *misquoted* what he actually said about *healthy weight* @4:02 mark of that video she says "… HCLF movement … when you are listening to McDougall who believe that you should be incredibly skinny and that’s the ideal … really unattainable level of thinness for us… *for me I should be around 108lbs or something* …” [she is saying that at the height of 5ft 3 in., according to Dr. McDougall, her ideal weight should be 108lbs - something Dr. McDougall *never* said] When I asked Swayze to provide the source from where she quoted Dr. McDougall, she gave a link of one his newsletters titled “ How Do I Gain Weight on the McDougall Diet? I’m Not Joking!” (along with a link for one of her older video) and claimed she *did not misquote Dr. McDougall* Here’s the summary (my own words, you can go and read for yourself) of Dr. McDougall’s newsletter which Swayze used to misquote him - --> First Dr. McDougall says you may not be too thin (and may be alright, notice how he does not say you are alright for sure) and shows a chart of Dr. Kempner’s findings - nowhere he says it’s THE *ideal weight* , in fact he clearly states *not* to look at the chart as *goal weights* --> He then says " _One Important Precaution_ . If you are too thin and have any concern that this might be a health issue then please check with your doctor " --> Finally, he gave suggests to consume more of healthy fats (nuts, seeds etc.) if you want to gain some weight (while following his prescription) A pure *fabrication* of Dr. McDougall’s view on healthy weight, imo … … NOWHERE IN THAT NEWSLETTER DR. MCDOUGALL SUGGESTED *108lbs* IS THE *IDEAL WEIGHT* FOR SOMEONE WHO IS *5 feet and 3 inches* TALL ... (and this is not the first time SWAYZE has done something similar) Swayze has something (at a *personal level* , it appears) against doctors/scientists/nutritionists/anyone who promotes a healthy plant based diet *You can be a vegan for ethical reasons but can still be unethical in other aspects of your life* , it seems [Mic, you can check the whole comment thread in her video where I (and Swayze) made the comments in response to an account named *boi boi* ]

Chia Seeds are sold on Amazon (easily available) and cost $16.50 for three pounds (they are also in my supermarket at a somewhat higher price). This is fairly expensive as food goes, but this is a miniscule part of my diet. Yes, canola oil is cheaper, but there are a lot of foods cheaper than other foods. I don't think we need to all eat fried potatoes, beans, and supplements - or whatever the cheapest source of all our nutrients would be.

Hi Mic, I'm a recent retiree and have gone whole food plant based this past December. No going back! I've reversed so many age related issues and lost ten pounds to boot! I've been binging on your videos and love the info mixed with the humor. Kind of the reason I've been following Dr. Greger and his daily dozen since the beginning of my transition. Being a more "mature" vegan, I really don't go in for all the KZbin drama. C'mon folks, please don't tell me that eating veggies and fruit, legumes nuts and seeds, no SOS, is crazy. Crazy healthy!

I used to sub to UV and I stayed in the longest until I could not stand it. I really tried to cling onto the positive but in the end even that wasn't enough. I feel that she is so concerned by finding a moderate conservative vegan diet that directly, without tweaking fits everyone, instead of dishing out a smorgasbord of options and let people choose what might fit them the best depending on their own preference. I myself sway between ethics/health as my primary reason and for me a mostly wholefood is the way to go. Someone who is in it for mainly ethics might not have the "energy" to go go whole food. Because, wether you go down a path or not, is a calculation of the cost in light of the benefit. Goooo team Mic. 👍🏾
