I may have mentioned to you my accidental sweet potato harvest. Basically I have a tulip tree with thick roots that I could not grow anything in the bed. So, I bought 3 sweet potato Vines just for the pretty bright green leaves. However, it wasn't the right leaf kind so I was disappointed. The "slips" barely gru the 1 st year. I figured they were having trouble with the thick roots around the tulip tree. That winter I noted the 3 tiny vines started to grow and fill out a little as the tulip tree loss it's leaves and gave the plant more light. The next spring, I noted the plants made it thru the winter. That fall I noted the vines were now growing up the tree and we're really prolific. I did not like the way it looked and cut the vines down. When I was trimming the vines in the bed I came across a "hump" next to the plant. It was a nice size sweet 🍠!! I dug it up quite easily with a small shovel! I looked for other humps and found 4 more more. Another day I found another hump. The sweet potatoes basically come up from under the ground when they are ready. No need to dig them up. Right now, I have not cut the new vines down but I will look for the humps. There was no way to know if I got all the sweet potatoes because I cannot actually dig them up! If I don't find any, I know I will have to wait another year.

Excess rain (or watering during the the final month is likely the rain.) No watering for 3 weeks before harvest is recommended. Whatever small varieties you have probably need much longer to grow. 130-150 days is norm. Longer is better.

I chose early varieties yo see if I could up my chances for success. We have such a short growing season here. Our first frost can happen in mid-September. Last year we were lucky and didn't have one until October. I may try using my hoop cover this year to see if we can extend the grow season a little longer!

Thank you, I really enjoyed them! ! How do you like Beauregard? I haven't tried that variety. This video was about 2022's harvest, and I am getting ready for 2023. This year's sweet potatoes were grown from last year's slips!

I haven't harvested them yet in zone 8b, yesterday they were 130 days, however I had a small container 2 weeks ago, some average size and some were small. So, I am going to give these in waiting, until the end of the month. They are still green and just starting to die back. It's still in the 80 here 50 at night. So far so good. I will check them next weekend. I will keep you posted if interested. GOD BLESS

I agree it’s real treasure seeking when harvesting sweet potatoes🤩. Last year (2021) was the first time we had sweet red potatoes. We planted 10 plants, 7 in full soil, harvest was 9 kg and 3 in pots, harvest 4 kg. This year we grew plants from that harvest, we used the little ones that we wouldn’t eat. We are going to harvest our sweet potatoes next weekend, so exciting what we will digging out😀.
