@colorbyryan Жыл бұрын
It's all a matter of how exacting your standards are. If you're grading for web, you might be able to get away with grading in Resolve's UI, but make sure you test your workflow. Render out a varied set of images including color bars, upload that to KZbin, and compare what you see on KZbin with Resolve's Viewer. If you're grading to a standard, like Rec.709, you need to have a calibrated screen and a video I/O device. With Resolve, the only video I/O devices that work are Blackmagic's Ultrastudio or Decklink cards. The cheapest one for a Windows computer would be the Decklink 4K Mini. Calibrated monitors will cost more. The cheapest will be a professionally calibrated 42" LG OLED C2, but then you have to find a local calibrator. Other than that, the monitor I have is no longer available, but it looks like the newest version is the LG LG27EQ850B for $2k USD. You can try to find a secondhand Flanders Scientific or Eizo.

Love your setup. About to purchase the Ultrastudio 4k Mini and I also want to switch my monitor input between the BMD and my MacMini M1. Having the HDMI switch in the signal path of the Ultrastudio, does it affect or degrade the signal to the grading monitor?
@colorbyryanАй бұрын
The HDMI switcher I used does not affect or degrade the signal in any way. I know this because I checked my calibration through the switcher and it was still perfect. I can't speak to any other HDMI switcher, but one would expect that any switcher would pass the image through as received. Of course, if you have a grading monitor that has more than one HDMI input, a switcher isn't needed.

Absolutely inspiring! Would love to copy that 1by1 except for building that massive NAD myself. And I am also torn between what monitor to get. Have you tried different monitors or what made you settle on that LG? Currently eyeballing an EIZO, but not sure how much I am willing to spend, since I am only starting in colorwork and it does not pay yet.
@colorbyryan3 ай бұрын
very cool, glad it was inspiring and helped you figure out your own setup. The EP950 LG was great, and out of the box it's probably the best rec709 SDR monitor that money can buy. Unfortunately it's not in stock anywhere anymore, as far as I know. I did end up selling that monitor and going with a 42" LG C3 (partly because big = fun and I also edit/do post engineering tech stuff, so the screen real estate is helpful). These do require calibration for bang-on SDR grading, but you could be reasonably close for starting out if you put it in Filmmaker mode. I'd also suggest keeping your eye out for secondhand Flanders Scientific displays; you'd probably end up with a 1080p display but those are pro monitors and have excellent calibration. Aside from that, the Display Presets on any recent-model M-series Macbook (look for the HDTV Video - BT.709-BT.1886 preset) is very good and you could reasonably grade in the Resolve viewer on one of those. Hope that helps!
@FelixChamber3 ай бұрын
@@colorbyryan Wow thanks for that reply! I will hold on with that decision for a moment because I have another big project that requires my full attention before I fully go into pursuing professional colorgrading further with the accompanying toys. Depending on how that project plays out, I might have a different set of funds as well. Going for a Flanders directly would be awesome, otherwise I would have to decide somewhere between an LG, Asus ProArt, Eizo or Dell Ultrasharp as an intermediate good monitor for SDR until doing coloringwork can finance a Flanders. I also want to do some editing jobs as well, especially for personal projects, so that intermediate monitor would ideally become a general monitor later on. Therefore overshooting might be stupid but colorwork is my greatest passion in the field of videoproduction, so the next upgrade should more than suffice for a while. Well, time will tell. May I ask what your goal with this channel is? I am still absolutely impressed, as were many others in the comments, about the scopes screen. Maybe a full walkthrough of what to get and how to set it up could be a beneficial video for your channel. For me personally, your journey in the postproduction world would be extremely interesting as well.
@colorbyryan2 ай бұрын
Good thinking process on what kind of gear you need. My goal with the channel! Great question. Obviously I haven't posted much - paid work always gets in the way and I'm not quite sure yet how or if KZbin should factor into my income stream. My goal would be to share value and knowledge to anyone who would be color-adjacent, such as indie producers, cinematographers, video/marketing agencies, etc. to help solve pain points and give them the tools to better work with color. I have a bunch of ideas ready to go - just need the time to get to them. I like both ideas you pitched, though, and I'll certainly add them to my list!

@@colorbyryan I get you. Making youtube work financially requires either or both of these things: 1. extreme time investement and patience - because getting views up to make it financially viable with everything outside pure entertainment is hard as hell. 2. A product or service that is marketed via the youtube channel - because anything below regular millions of views makes only pennies Since you apparently want to share technical niche knowledge, which is a hard enough market to get a share of, obviously number2 is more relevant for you. Therein you have 2 main options: 1. Using youtube presence as a funnel for your existing services. 2. Create a product and/or community and/or separate service (e.g coaching for beginners in postproduction) based on your knowledge, skills and experience in that field. The second point would have to be thought of as a diversification and new income stream, whereas the first point is based solely on solidifying and scaling your existing business. These two variants would require relatively different strategies for the content you might be going to put out. I probably have much more input for you in those regards, so in case you want to brainstorm or discuss with me further, feel free to reach out :-)

Bias lighting is from MediaLight. Power is via USB from the monitor so it switches on and off with the monitor. Aside from that I use Phillips Hue bulbs (that obviously work with HomeKit) in the room which can get close enough to 6500K to be good enough.

Exploring some ideas how to make that happen... for now I have a video how I built the NAS all shot; just needs an edit... but I shot it last October. ugh! I checked your channel - instant sub! Love your setup. I’m new to color grading setup, and compare knowledge I find everywhere. Does using BM Ultrastudio 4K use less gpu on the MacBook ? Always struggle editing in FCPX with my M3 Max + 4K monitor plugged via usbc
@colorbyryan5 ай бұрын
Using an Ultrastudio or Decklink doesn't use less GPU. Resolve (and any other software) will always use the GPU to do compute, and then pass the output onto the Decklink/Ultrastudio for playback. Video I/O like the Decklink or Ultrastudio just ensures an accurate picture from GPU to screen that hasn't been affected by another color management from the OS or other software. It's interesting you're having struggles with FCPX on an M3 Max... generally I wouldn't expect issues, unless you had a lot of tough footage (RED, H.265, etc.) and/or are doing a lot of realtime FX. You could try proxies I suppose, which I prefer for a snappy editing experience anyway.

Great video, as I’m in the process of deciding on a reference monitor which will also use the UltraStudio 4K Mini. Are you still happy with the LG? I assume I wouldn’t have an issue with a VESA mount rather than using LG’s stand? Finally, do you run any audio through the reference monitor, or run the audio through your MacBook while you’re grading? Nice setup!
@colorbyryan10 ай бұрын
Yes, the LG is great - if you can find it! From what I can tell they’re discontinued and hard to find now. I’ve actually moved on to an LG 2023 C3 42”. They’re great for the editing work I still do, but they are definitely very tricky to calibrate. Out of the box, the EP950 series I show in this video or a used Flanders is probably going to be your best bet. And yes this monitor is good for a VESA mount. For audio, yes I just use my MacBook’s audio output to speakers. Running audio out from your decklink - either out from your reference monitor or the decklink’s audio outputs - is a good way to go if A/V sync is crucial to your workflow.

I should clarify - the only thing that makes noise are the heads in the spinning HDD’s themselves when they’re seeking. The rest of it - fans etc - are silent. You can get away with coloring HDR on LG OLED's, though you can't get any color above a few hundred nits because of the white subpixel. All those options are useable depending on where it's going and what the expectations are. How is the exact setup for the Omniscope?
@colorbyryan10 ай бұрын
I’m using a Blackmagic 4K Mini. HDMI out goes to the display. I’m using the SDI out straight back into the SDI input for Omniscope to use. A few of Blackmagic’s cards can input and output at the same time - I know the PCIe 4K Extreme can also do this. The MacBook hasn’t had any performance issues running Omniscope and Resolve at the same time - in fact, I’ve also used OBS/LBS (I normally use Louper.io) to stream at the same time as well. For that, I turn on NDI output from Omniscope, and have LBS capture from NDI.
@JustPassingByBaby10 ай бұрын
@@colorbyryan Yeah. I understood that. I just am not sure what you were doing with the input signal and how you use the Omniscope? Usually I just use it as an effect on a node in DRS. But you seem to use the separate software and add a source video directly into it from the Ultrastudio Input?
@colorbyryan10 ай бұрын
Yes, that's right. I prefer having Omniscope use the same signal I'm sending my reference monitor. Using Omniscope as an OFX on the clip or timeline level can work, as long as you're careful that there is no more color management that Resolve is doing after that point. So, I have Resolve sending out a signal to my reference monitor via the Decklink 4K Mini, then I'm capturing that signal again using the same Decklink 4K Mini (just an SDI cable going out and in again), and Omniscope is using that as an input. Does that make sense?
