Thank you for this. I live in Chicago and am currently in the same internal debate the owners of Olga were facing. My 3.5 y/o frenchie pug is in perfect health, and is the sweetest most outgoing dog I've ever come across. Everyone she comes in contact with from toddlers to seniors just love her and her personality. Our vet is encouraging me to get her spayed but for some reason, there is hesitation in my gut. I have been telling them that I don't want her to go under the knife unless it is necessary. I think I am giong to go with my gut on this one, and it is nice to hear someone articulate so well what I had been feeling about this important question.

Thank you for this. Every time I go to the vets with my GSD female I get the same sort of pressure. They are wasting their time, my girl is happy and healthy and I can't think of a single reason that would put her through major surgery just in case someting went wrong. She is now eight years old ,a lovely weight and has a thick glossy black coat , which I believe would be far different had she lost her hormones

Hello thank you for this. I have an amazing 2yr old Female Belgian Malinois and my vet has told me does not like to operate on healthy dogs. Deal with the heat cycle twice a year simple as that. Living in Madrid, Spain.

Thank you so much for this !! I agree. I use to breed German Shepherds myself, with a working breed original from Germany. So absolutely smart. When I would start training one of the offspring of our female, it seemed he already knew what to do in the training steps. We had him for yrs and was such a great dog. And speaking of cancers in un-spayed dogs, later in our female Shepherds life we had her spayed (not realizing possible consequences) she developed tumors on her belly, don't know if it had to do with spay. It just makes sense that they need these organs. Anyway, thanks again for this information.

Waiting for the commercial to play and I can say yes !!!! I had a friend who left a dog with me who wasn't spayed. A 69 spay turned into 1000 emergency pyrometra surgery!!! Needless to say I did the surgery and now this dog is mine and she is 16 years old. But shortly after she had an issue and had to have an eye removed! She's my million dollar dog !

@@8888Riley Not sure if you're still questioning this, but the important thing is to keep them as clean as possible during their heats - it may help mitigate pyo. I have had one female dog (Golden retriever) that I kept intact. I never had an issue. She passed at 12 yrs of an unrelated issue. Beautiful coat, healthy thyroid her whole life, never incontinent in her senior years, no cancers. I laboured over this issue her whole life - fearing pyo but being extremely vigilant during and after her heat cycles. There's no magic answer unfortunately. It still worries me if I get another female in the future. Ovary sparing spays seem like the way to go (remove uterus only) if you choose to go this route.

yes i tell all my clients wen buying a puppy,, "DON'T LET YOUR VET TELL U ,, U SHOULD DESEXED YOUR DOG BY 6MTS " i tell them let them get to at least 2ys old... I have researched that a Male DOGS can be prone to prostate cancer from 7yrs on to old age... females just like humans after having multiple litters can be prone to cervical cancer in old age because of scar tissue an nods on the ovaries,,, so i believe about 7yrs old to desex your dog either way... As a dog competitor and trainer of over 40 years …and a veterinarian, I feel I have insight to speak. Of course the client can do as she chooses but I would caution her of a pyometra risk. A closed pyometra is life threatening and an emergency surgery to save her female’s life risky and expensive. But I agree… atleast wait until a good size female is over the age of two and has had multiple heat cycle….therefore helping to protect your female ligaments, orthopedic and cancer risks.

She is a nice dog but never had any training, can't leash walk without work etc I am working with her... My brother never fixed her (wanted to breed 😒) and she is 11 now. She just had an emergency spay $3500 because her female organs were swollen and filled with pus. Is this a common thing for unspayed females? I have recieved so many different answers and am concerned about when to spay a female if this is something thay "always happens" as most vets have said. I have a female I am not planning on spaying and would love another opinion as all the vets here just repeatedly pressure me to spay and now are using this as an extra point.

@@147salsa That is pyometra and common in intact females but not all intact female dogs/cats will have pyometra. I had my mom's dog spayed at around 4 years old because I don't want her to get pregnant for the 4th time because my mom is an irresponsible pet owner. I had to spay this female dog's daughter years later after the latter's first heat so she won't get pregnant by her own father and male siblings all of which live together in my mom's house. So, if you don't plan on breeding your female (3 litters should be the max) and you don't want to spay her, make sure she doesn't get pregnant by other dogs. Or you can have her spayed when she is a bit older like two years for the small breeds or 4 years if a big breed.

After the litters I will spay her! But it's good to hear there is wiggle room tho I'm definitely more aware of pyometra and other issues now.

My female dog is intact so always on by my side. Inside or outside the house. While my two male dogs since they came from the shelter are eunochs Oh how I pity them( for some reasons). Anyway I will keep my female dog intact. Thank you for the advice. PS same thing with my vets advice but I will ignore it.

I have a friend who has a dog the same breed as my own (Std Poodle), but 2 1/2 years younger. Both male. She got hers neutered when he was 18 months old on her vet’s advice, and a lot of other people too. I sent her numerous videos (like Karen Becker’s) about the benefits of leaving the dog intact. She had him cut anyway. Last time she brought her dog over she commented on how lean, fast and energetic my dog is compared to her own, younger dog. I just looked at her with a “what did you expect” expression, and said, “Well, he’s intact.” Don’t know if it sunk in or not. My dogs tail is not docked, either, but her dog’s is. She commented on that, too. I said that I do not hold with cutting bits off dogs for no good reason. Again, don’t know if it sunk in. It’s too late for her dog, now, anyway.

I don’t went to spay my dog because she’s my Only child (lol) and I don’t want her to have issues due to me spaying her!!! I’m most afraid of urinary incontinence! She’s a really happy playful dog and love people and I don’t see any reason to spay other then I do not want to deal with her cycle and I feel that’s being selfish!! I lost a spayed female GSD to hemangiosarcoma at age 6, and then another to osteosarcoma at age 3. Only then did someone suggest I look up "health benefits of not spaying". What a horror. Decided to keep my Malinois intact, here's hoping it works out. How could it be worse?

This is a big fight between people because of so many unwanted puppies and stray animals. I mean people get vicious. The vast majority of people are not responsible enough to keep a pregnancy from happening hence the shelters we have full of dogs. This ruins it for people who want the best for their dogs and are responsible.i go online and see all the unwanted dogs and even though I have not fixed mine and have never had a pregnancy I feel badly cause I know why these people are upset.i think people should have a choice. We loose so many animals to early because we are removing parts of their anatomy that they need to keep from getting sick. But I guess if your willing to feed your dog sawdust corn and mixes that could have dead animals in them then it probably doesn't concern you to much.

Truly, it’s highly disturbing how hard it is to find a good, critical thinking, kind and patient vet. I can’t tell you just how much my Malinois has been through with horrible vet clinics here. And yes, there are several who will practically spit fire at you if you mention healthier, holistic, and alternative approaches to them…that goes against their robotic schooling. And they virtually all participate in a corporate service that sends out all of their emails for them with pharmaceuticals plastered all over them. All they do is change the vet logo. I get carbon copy marketing emails from several vets we’ve been to over the years. They’re part of a corporate machine. We are so far behind in quality care medically for both humans and animals. So much greed and zero critical thinking. Honestly, it impacts my desire to get another pet and I know of others in the same boat. Until we can find a vet we can trust.

I have 2 male Xolos. They came from different lines and breeders. I ended up paying extra to not have them neutered. Nothing to do with breeding just trying to have them fully grown. Is a challenge as one is 2 and the other is 3. They were really good with each other until this past Christmas. Now most of the time they are separated as I noticed the older one growling at the young one. Is hard work but I am willing to do it. Thank you for this video and information.

I've only owned male dogs in my life and 4 months ago got a female a large breed, I didn't like even the thot of her heat cycle,and thot I can handle it for 2 years, But after that I found out being spayed means a hysterectomy and watched video of spay surgery and then finding your video and then a couple others & I would rather deal with her heat cycles than that! Unless she has a medical issue i will not have that done!😮

I was going to respond to a persons comment about why you don’t have more subscribers than you do and respond with “because most people don’t want to hear the truth”. Then you got into the part about the veterinary practices and money and it absolutely confirmed what my response would have been. My husband is in banking and the bank is one of the last remaining privately owned banks anywhere and it’s a daily battle against the conglomerate banks who are run by the powers that be to stay open and help the working class people around us. So, like Mr. Frawley says, “it’s all about the money”. What a sad truth. Every dog owner needs to deal with their own dog. I explain my opinions which are based on 60 years of serious dog training and breeding. Not everyone agrees with what I do and thats fine. Its their dog to live with - not a big deal.

I habe a 5 month Cane Corso female. I was thinking on a sparing spay after she reaches 2years of age. The sparing spay will keep her Hormons normal (it keeps the ovaries) but she will not be able to bred.

I have a feeling this is different over in Europe. While spaying and neutering are still recommended, vets don't seem to be forceful about it, leaving the decision to the owners after giving their opinion. They also don't seem to make decisions based on monetary gain. I'm lucky enough to have a wonderful vet who will advise and discuss options on all care, and will help me save money when possible. We decided together to keep my youngest male whole to keep him lean and muscular to support his hips. We also don't have large corporations taking over smaller vet practices. Adoption associations however DO force spaying and neutering, often at a far too young age, which is sad. Thanks for the great content!

1. Thank you for this important video. 2. I adopted a 3 year old 3-legged pure bred lab from a neighbor who could not properly care for this amazing animal. The dog terrorized another neighbor who is very afraid of dogs because the original owner could not keep Flipper (the 4th leg looks like a T-Rex shriveled limb) on her own property. (She has no fence and that household is pure chaos.) It's resulted in some neurotic behavior from Flipper and it's taking time and patience to bring her into a better balance. Example: The original owner used the crate for punishment. Flipper frequently would place herself in time out for reasons known only to her. One time she self-timed out after farting because the original owner thought it was fun to shame her after she farts. Flipper is very sensitive and I've had to really open up the rules for her so she can be a happy, normal dog. 3. The original owner didn't have Flipper spayed and she's gone through 3 or 4 heat cycles. I decided to not spay her, not because I want to breed her, but because I'd read that spaying almost always results in a female gaining weight because the natural hormone system that keeps weight and hunger and activity level in check was ripped out. (All my previous pets were spayed/neutered because they were all rescue animals; I've never had a whole animal in my life, and I'm 69.) I figured: "OK. I need to reexamine spaying Flipper because she's already at a disadvantage because I have to limit walks in order to not throw her already compromised ambulation system even further out of whack. And I'll deal with the heat realities." But I didn't hear anything in your presentation about weight gain after spaying. Did I get bad info on that count?

I just left a comment on this. I had this happen. Friend left a dog with me and I had to pay 1000.00 for her surgery. ( cheap end). Then shortly after she had a issue with her eye and had to have that removed too. ( week later) . Were they related ? I don't know. But now she's my dog , my friend asked me to keep her and I wouldn't trade her for anything. The little one eyed wonder.

We had our 17 year old Brussels/ Chihuahua get pyometra. A good dose of antibiotics, and she was perfectly fine. She lived to be 22 years old, never had another issue with Pyro.

Most people will spay or neuter their animals, for no other reason than they keep hearing it's the thing to do. Not everybody gets into veterinary medicine behind a "Love" of animals, it's a very, VERY lucrative industry. with the smaller "Mom and Pop" style vet clinics being bought out by VCA & with their investors that have nothing whatsoever to do with animals other than as a cash cow. You should always be wary, no matter what it is about somebody advising you to do something, that's going to cost you money- if you select them to do the work.

Thank you so much I will subscribe. I love your thinking and thank you for training dogs instead of killing dogs. I have nothing but rescues I just rescued a German shepherd mix. She’s a puppy, and a huge handful for me. I’m 58 and a flight attendant she did contract Paro, I’m so happy to report that she recovered fully. I am going to get her spayed because she is a large breed and although we’re using a prong collar that helps magically, she could potentially get loose on me and I wouldn’t be able to catch her she is also getting chipped, I questioned the whole spayed or not spayed I waited she’s 10 months I want her to be young enough to recover quickly enough to not mess up her growing. I hope I’m doing the right thing the other dogs I have are all fixed they came from pound, etc. she was off the street.

This is a silly post. I am 75 and owned dogs my whole like. I ran our breeding kennel for 35 years. I never had an unwanted litter. Just because the world is filled with idiots who will not manage their dogs is NOT A REASON TO SPAY AND NEUTER young dogs. Do you really think stupid rules like that will stop shelters getting dogs. How do the drug laws work out? Have they been keeping drugs out of our contry ? NOT SO !!!

I have had 3 female cocker spaniels - one of them I didn't spay and she did get breast cancer. Because of that I did spay mt next one very early but later on life she developed dementia and couldn't walk because of her hind legs. She did live to 15. My current dog is 2 years old and so far not spayed. I do not want to spay her but afraid. Any advice?

What about pyometra in female dogs when left intact? I want to leave my female intact and not breed with her.. but it seems that pyometra is a great risk and can be fatal if not treated.. and treatment is full emergency spay. Can I please have your input regarding pyometra risks in un spayed unbred females especially if left intact over 6 years of age?

I understand it's only a 18% chance of closed pyometra. Do an ultrasound after a cycle. Give her olive leaf extract and vitamin C

Thank you for this I have a large breed German Shepherd mix I rescued she’s approximately 10 months. I’ve already had to nurse her back to Health from Paro. I am scared of death of anything else I’m 58 and she is a large breed the chances of her getting loosecould potentially happen and get pregnant as well. All my dogs are rescues. They were already fixed when I got them. She’s off the street. She has an appointment tomorrow morning my question and I hope I’m doing the right thing.

Could it be some veterinarians just use cancer as a scare tactic to get owners to spay their dogs because they know there's an incredible amount of irresponsible pet owners are out there filling up animal shelters with litters of unwanted puppies they allowed to happen?

OMG I just did a video sort of like this one for my puppy adopters because people were getting puppies from me and vets were not honoring our vaccines, double vaccinating, putting eight week old puppies on flea and tick poisons, demanding pediatric spays, etc. I was a vet surgical tech for years. I have seen some things that would chill you. People need to realize the vet is a business to make money. Your dog belongs to YOU not to the vet. Let them keep their opinions to themselves. I tell my puppy people if they try to scare you or guilt you. FIRE that vet and move on. There is only ONE treatment required by law and that is a rabies shot. Period.

Dogs with all their parts, especially important hormonal parts, are healthier than spayed and neutered dogs. There is a ton of solid scientific evidence to support that, but truthfully it shouldn't take a biologist to make that determination. It's just common sense. Aside from that, if an owner feels it's too difficult to keep their intact female from becoming pregnant, or it they feel that using something to prevent spotting is too much of a burden, then maybe having a best friend pet dog shouldn't be in the cards for them.

Hi! First of all tell you I never comment your videos but I do follow, remember things I have on the back of my mind and learn a lot from you. THANKS. I really love the way you treat dogs, thanks for bringing back to earth the common sense. I think that with a female dog, you should spay, they do get some of them get brest cancer, (mostly small breeds). But there are many that get uterus infection (piometra), this you see alot on unspayed elder bitches, and you need to spay when they are old, and in bad condition... I don't think you need to spay to early, between 4-7years, depending if you want to breed, well just when you consider she's finished,7...8 perhaps? And if you neuter your vet should retire the uterus also, many leave it, and so they still get this desease. And as you say, I never saw a dog / bitch that has behaviour problems and they get fixed by neutering as people think.

I've had 3 dogs female none spayed . None got cancer etc lived 14 and 15 years . all small dogs yorkie and shitzu and now have maltese puppy . Have friends that had big bladder problems after got Bitches neutered also said felt lot pressure from their vets . And my dogs always with me etc But I guess we all had different experiences with our pets . 👍And not all people are Responsible Dog Owners unfortunately.

I suspect the answer to this is "nope", but . . . beyond vigilant supervision, are there any tips/tricks to preventing unwanted pregnancies? I have an 11 month old pre-pubescent nonworking intact female, our lifestyle is such that she spends a lot of time off leash and wandering in proximity to me during hikes, etc. I also have shelter & rescue experience, very familiar with euth rates, and previously just followed the common recs. But you've got me reconsidering . . .

Never spayed my dogs as always with me etc but noticed this time a younger vet trying the Scare Factor with me .!! Now she may be being taught this stuff by big companies? But I go by my gut and always research and talk to friends who got dogs Neurted etc I was polite, thou I cud have pointed out to her that her More experienced Boss and older man , had agreed with me that no need when my last dog was always with us so no point unnessary operation 😏 .

Lots of folks have no desire to supervise their dogs or teach them to listen, that's how accidental breedings happen. Neutering dogs because of owners apathy is kinda like not feeding your baby so you don't have to change a diaper🤦‍♀️😂

I think of it like this: if a human removed their breasts or testicles, their risk of breast or testicular cancer drops significantly. Would you do that? Probably not. So why would we do it for dogs?

My vet told me pyrometria is rare ,I take my girl yearly to check her out for pyrometria. Should women all get hysterectomies or breasts removed in case ?

@@denisethomson7685 wow... this is the first time I have heard of a vet saying pyometra is rare (I dont trust vets and never have) Ive always had males and left them intact.... sadly I know of a lot of dogs that have had this. But I still do not want to spay my female.. but the thought of her getting pyo scares the hell out of me.... Can you tell me what the test is that they can do to see? Pyometra can occur weeks after heat cycle and kill very quickly is closed pyometra. It would seem that getting her checked twice yearly would be better?? I dont want to get her spayed and am very much looking to get as much info and input on the subject of pyometra from as many vets and dog owners as I can.

I got an intact 3 year old female “retired” from breeder. She came with health issues. Soon after I got her she became lethargic and one day she sat on the floor and wouldn’t move. Took her to the vet she had pyometra and needed emergency surgery. I had her for two more years but unfortunately she passed away from intestinal issues. I don’t think she was given much healthcare while she was with the breeder. I currently have a 3 year old terrier who I had neutered at 2 years old. He slowed down and put on weight. He was and still is very dog aggressive. Soon after he was neutered I got a female fox terrier puppy. The boy was very aggressive/dominant with her. After about 6 months he matured a bit more and became incredibly focused on me, listened very well and became a super smart boy. The female is now 14 months old, has gone through one heat cycle, and I’m getting her spayed in a few days. My main fear is pyometra which is very life threatening. I’ve also researched that spaying before her second heat reduces the risk of breast cancer, which itself can be very fast spreading and fatal. It’s really up to each owner to do what they feel is best for the dog. I recently got a five month old intact Jack Russell who I had neutered within a month. While intact he was constantly pestering my female and was challenging my neutered male. I would have ideally either kept him intact or waited for age two then neuter. But the sex based behavior was too much and I wanted more harmony in our relationship. I’m 60 and retired. I have the time where I could have always kept the males separate but I didn’t want to turn my house into a mini prison and also I didn’t get multiple dogs to have intense friction between them. The boys get along great now. They patrol the yard together and take the lead barking out the window while the female stays on the bed content her two bodyguards are protecting her.

I love your videos, but the "Fact is" most people are not responsible and will have "accidental" litters of dogs. We volunteer and foster for a dog rescue. Guess what? Too many dogs are being destroyed every day by people who do not spay and neuter. Funny how we talk about the vets and cooperations that make money on scare tactics. Didn't you make money or even a living by breeding dogs? I have an idea, head to your local shelter tomorrow and pick up the oldest dog. Look around and ask yourself how all these pups got there. Their owners should have had their parents spayed and neutered.

This guy seems to be misinformed. I've always spayed my dogs and no problem with any of them. They were all long hair dachshunds and they lived good long lives. 2 lived to be 16 and 18. One had cancer issues and the other 2 were retired breeders. 5 dogs in total. In my view, I don't want to breed them so i spay them. The only reason i would leave her intact if i wanted to breed her.
