Good advice! “Agility at 10 months” oh my…way too young.

This vid perfectly described my BCs progress over the last few months. He had awesome recall in open areas off lead until 7 months old then anything and everything was way more exciting than me. I went back to no off leash open areas, on lead only (including long lead) and shorter daily walks avoiding times of big distraction ie when other dogs were out and about. I also am walking him alone as my other dog was becoming reactive too as though they were feeding off each other. This reactive stage I have been managing for both dogs with methods discovered in another of your vids and that is going well for both my dogs. He is now 16 months and engagement has improved a lot and he is far more settled - not perfect but tolerable for us all :-) Thanks so much for your informative vids :-)

This is a great video. I would like to print what you say on a flyer and hand it to all the people who tell you “a border collie needs agility” or “a border collie needs to run” etc. I can’t even imagine how many border collies have been mentally damaged because of these misperceptions. They see a hyperactive border collie and assume that’s because of lack of activity, and then enter a cycle where the dog is let run wild and then gets even more hyped. What many people miss is that when BC’s work with sheep, they are always in a concentrated mode, waiting for commands. The sheep are just the “reward” that they get for % of the time they work. When my then 1,5 year old high-drive border collie was injured, she wasn’t allowed to run for 8 weeks. I then increased the mental exercises and trick training we did. She actually became a calmer dog after that.

Always good advice Ed. What you allow gets repeated. What gets repeated becomes habit.

Totally agree with everything you said. You guys are great. I’ve been fortunate to have owned several border collies and engaging with them as a puppy has let me skate through the “terrible 2’s”. Wishing that gal the very best with her dog.

Always really enjoy and hear great stuff in these segments. I would be a little hesitant tho to even think of suggesting someone exercise a dog that wasn't physically full developed alongside their bike tho. Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with that but because owners in my experience (which isn't as a trainer) tend to be oblivious to the amount of energy a puppy/dog is expending and way over do it! Just my thoughts and again thank you and your wife for sharing so much.

Oh yes! When my Newfie was 10 months it was bad! He’d bolt after any dog he could see.. I was told try agility to help focus. He jumped out of his crate to get to the dogs! He’s almost 3, it does get better

Love this as it has confirmed to me that Having took some of your courses and then thereafter making similar mistakes to this owner, I have been thinking and adapting as you recommend . This gives me the feedback I need and reassures am on right track. My dogs level of distraction is currently enough being outside whilst we train and best when very quiet whilst we work on focus unless we are running. Thankyou for this.

I know consider myself a dog expert and I would definitely consider 10-months a bit young I mean when my dog was that age she was not as I mean she's seven now a roughly 78 anyways she's into me far more than she wasn't 10 months and she was learning about the world she was all over the place now she's hounding to me to where I'm she considers me the absolute her world and protecting the house and of course she stays in the house almost all the time except she goes out to run or go to the bathroom in the backyard but that's a big house so she gets her exercise running around the house and until stand on furniture if somebody would try to break in your stand on the table and I say are you supposed to be on there and she just gets off but that's how she is I'll be okay with her do whatever she had to do to protect us

This is a load of crap, your 10 months old dog still needs to be able to run and play with other dogs. Get an E-collar, your dog can still play off leash and you will still have control of your dog.
