I'm genuinely touched that the person who didn't go to their friend's funeral when they were children still thought about that to this day. They were a child, so they wouldn't know what empathy is, hence why they said no. Despite this, that moment stuck with them forever and they wanted to atone for leaving their friend to mourn alone. I work in the restaurant industry and see shitty toilet paper in the trash more times than I can count, I think the reason behind it are people (potentially mainly just older people) that grew up with not the best septic tanks and were taught to throw it away instead of flushing it to not cause extra problems with backups. I’ve come to that conclusion and I think it hold some merit.

Oh it's definitely normal. Here in Mexico our plumbing infrastructure sucks and people sometimes didn't have working toilets at all so we all collectively just normalized setting up a trash can to fill with toilet paper and that's that, it's absolutely bizarre when an American business opens up shop here and they DON'T put up trash cans in their bathrooms.
