I'd also like to imagine that most anime or anime-adjacent materials are probably going to be searched for on Twitter, Pixiv, and other such places. When it comes to this site in particular, I feel like it is a more normie-centric space. I haven't seen it myself, but I'd imagine video games in general take up a lot less of the search results. And thus, most of the popular video game and video game character choices here are of more popular series. When it comes to movies of this nature, I feel like you'd have a better chance of finding them on one of the -boorus or following an artist through Patreon or Fanbox.

I think there's likely bias toward Fortnite (and some others) in these results based on how they could be handling character-specific searches. There are multiple ways you could mess that up. If searching "Chun Li" counts as a point for every game she's in, then Fortnite is getting massively inflated (yeah, yeah) by getting credit for every character in the roster even if people aren't specifically looking for it. This takes some effort to implement but could probably be automated through the tag system. If "Chun Li" only counts for the character herself and doesn't affect the game searches, then there's still a bias as people looking for Fortnite will search "Fortnite Chun Li" while Street Fighter fans will just search "Chun Li". There's no need to specify the game if you're looking for the original. This is probably what they're doing as it requires the least effort. The best way to do it would probably be to attribute character-only searches to their franchise of origin only, but that would require manually connecting them. The worst part is of course that we don't know how they handled this. This is bad science PH, publish your methodology.

What seems likely to me is that Fortnite's 3D models being more accessible. So rather than making a whole new Chun Li model or trying to extract it from Street Fighter files getting it from Fortnite is probably a lot easier. So a lot of people use them. I think there is a something like that for Samus from Metroid in that one of the most common Zero Suit Samus 3D models used in stuff like this is based on iirc some Dead or Alive character who looks similar and has a blonde ponytail so they can just put her in the Zero Suit and have a Samus model that way.

There's some interesting data here in how certain things are miscategorized or may be misleading in their popularity. There's a lot of completely sfw minecraft let's plays on the 'hub for instance, and the number of characters misattributed results in an unreliable ranking. I think data from r34 would be better, phub is when you are just starting out, and in r34 you can kinda carve your own niche out, the only downside is you often have to deal with other niches, like how furries dominate half the platform, and nobody cares enough to put more things on the ‘not furry ‘ tag, and it becomes quite vanilla too, but if you learn to just ignore that part, you can have a perfectly good time

I think overwatch might be because of a few different things, like it came out relatively close to the popularization of the internet, early 2010s, and it was a new franchise from a company that had a death grip on gamers in the 2000s, so massively hyped, but also I think it's one of the only big western series with that kind of poppy pixar esque 3D art styles that we were conditioned to like also in the 2000s.
