Women from those eras were so beautiful, it’s nice to see someone from this time look beautiful and not overdone like everyone else 😊

I'm always interested in how other people got into vintage, so thanks for this video! Speaking for myself, I've always been a history nerd. My maternal grandmother was a dancer in the '40s, and she loved to watch old Hollywood musicals from that time, so I grew up with those images. When I was in elementary school, I was really into the 19th century and pioneer-type things, so I wore a lot of calico dresses. In middle school, I went through a Victorian period. When I was around 15 or 16, my dad got me the Beatles White Album and I started to get really into the '60s style. Now I'm in my mid-30s and wear mostly '40s and '50s styles. So my eras have switched a bit over time, but I've always been planted somewhere in the past!

L B-R Thanks for sharing your story! ☺️ I love that your grandmother influenced you too! I hear a lot of similar stories in terms of changing styles through the years. A few of my friends went through goth, steampunk, rockabilly, or emo phases. I feel like for people who are into vintage or alternative styles, what they wear is a big part of their self expression. It is often said that how you look, and what you wear clothing and make up wise, doesn't define you (which is true of course). However, I really do feel out of sorts, and a little stifled, when I am forced to wear "normal" clothes for a job or other reason. I'd prefer to wear a uniform than be told I have to "dress like everyone else because I draw to much attention to myself". And I truly love the process of planning outfits and putting on makeup! The process is just as enjoyable, if not more, than the finished product.

I just found you and your videos, and I feel like I've found a kindred spirit. I'm a jazz / torch singer, and my favorite era is 1930s and 1940s. I was digging around for more hairstyle ideas preparing for my show at the end of this month, telling the story of the Cotton Club and Cafe Society. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love how it's something you've been into since you were small and have continued to live it throughout your life! I've always loved the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe and I'd always go in and out of being really into and researching (read: staring at pictures of) women from the 1920s-1960s-ish. I'd admire their hair and makeup and wonder why the "mainstream" style never really entailed that kind of vintage vibe (at least not that I'd noticed). Especially with the hair side of things, I have never felt confident going out or, when I was younger, to school with vintage inspired hairstyles, but I hope to do so one day without thinking much of it (which is why I admire people like you for being able to live it so confidently if that makes sense). I study English and last year I was in a course on Classical Hollywood Film and, although we weren't focussing so much on the style side of things apart from looking briefly at flappers, it was required of us that we watch loads of films from that era and it got me back into this again. Then last year before Christmas at some point, if not November, I was looking up how to do pincurls or hot rollers and came across your channel and yeah - ever since i've been into it again. My mum and I have also been rewatching some of our favourite films from that era and watching new ones, which I love because she too loves that whole style and look and it's something we've definitely bonded over.

It has such a fascinating history beyond the style doesn't it!? Once you get into film and culture there is so much to learn about the stars from that era and the history of hollywood. And it's so nice that you and your mum are bonding over this. I love how taking an interest in vintage style and the Golden Era of Hollywood brings generations together. I love talking to my mum and grandmas about this stuff!
@nataliejones52727 жыл бұрын
Definitely! We had a whole session or two on Judie Garland and although I'm not a huge fan of her, it was interesting nonetheless. And yeah, it's also something that will probably never get old and I reckon future generations will still be talking about and idolising that era. I remembered recently too that my mum named me after Natalie Wood; when she told me when I was much younger I didn't think much of it, but now that I know who she is and after having watched Rebel without a Cause I kind of love it.

I've loved vintage stuff and looks for as long as I remember! I prefer old TV shows, love old movies, and new stuff that takes place in an older era. I'm currently loving Miss Fisher's mystery series. I've also always enjoyed talking to older people. They have such interesting stories to tell! One day I was searching different things on You Tube and just decided to go for it! Adding vintage accessories, wearing vintage style make up, putting my hair in curlers or pin curls....those are easy ways to incorporate vintage in my daily look while I build a vintage inspired wardrobe. Thank you for sharing your story! And the music! How could I forget That! I of my favorite childhood moments is listening to 50's records with my dad.

How great is it that there are so many period dramas at the moment!? TV is made for us! AND we have all the original stuff too! Like I need to spend more time watching things lol! I love old music so much, in fact, Val keeps naming bands and artists from the 80s to now and I'm like "ahhhhh I have no idea..." but you quiz me on anything from 1920-1979 and I'm your gal 😉

I love your story. I didn't know you were a performer, very cool! I have adored vintage and classic styles for a long time, but I don't currently dress that way all the time. I would love to. 👌🏻I grew up with an elderly neighbor lady that lived next door to my family. Her name was Jessie. My mom was her caretaker when she didn't have a full time caretaker in the house. We didn't have a TV in our house, so when my mom was watching Jessie, we would go over with my mom so we could watch movies. Well, Jessie only liked movies. So we watched a ton of The Derbin Girls, Grace Kelly, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Bette Davis, Lauren Bacall...you name it. I am really glad I watched those movies instead of mostly just cartoons. :)

So lovely! And you connected with her and took an interest in the things she knew and liked - that is by far my favourite thing about being into vintage, older generations have so much to offer us and this is a wonderful way to break the ice. I have so many beautiful older friends and it breaks my heart when young people tell me they are scared of old people or don't know how to talk to them. They have all these amazing stories to tell and things to share!
@EstherRimert7 жыл бұрын
MissBeeTown yes for sure. Old people can be quite funny at times too. I never met my grandparents. All of them died when I was really young beside my dad mother. But she died not long after. She Jessie was a form of a grandmother for us all in a way. She would always tell us stories about her childhood. :)

The first video of yours that I watched was your vintage hot roller hair tutorial more than a year ago and I've been following your videos ever since! I love that you're sharing your vintage story here and a more personal side of you in your vlogs - it's not only inspiring other vintage lovers but through the vlogs I love that we get to enjoy Paris with you and experience the city with you - from the lackluster vegan fair to the beautiful the vegan patisserie ☺️ (even though it's through a screen haha.) love your videos - I look forward to them everyday during the 30 vids in 30 days challenge. Here's hoping you'll have time for another series soon! 🤗 love from Penang Island!! 🌴☀️🌊

I love hearing how you started getting into vintage dressing like you I would watch vintage movies with my mom, I loved Vivian Leigh, Shirley temple, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Doris day ginger Rogers and Judy garland, I love their styles and how glamorous they all were. I always wanted to dress like them but only recently had the nerve to actually do it so I have bought repro clothes and I feel so pretty and I love picking out my outfits each day when I am well enough. I am also going to try styling my hair soon though I can’t do it every day as my health is not great and that might not be possible we shall see x

Ahh this is the exact same for me! In high school, I watched Breakfast at Tiffany's an embarrassing amount of times (I can do the entire script without watching it lol) and got super into TCM. That's so awesome that you got into vintage through films.

Thank you, love your vids and just subscribed. I'm really loving the hat in your profile pic. I LOVE HATS. How can I find a hat like that? Also, do you happen to have a vintage hat collection? :)
@MissBeeTownsend6 жыл бұрын
I'm actually thinking of doing a vintage hat collection and how to wear them video so thanks for the prompt! That hat is called a Tam hat and this style is by far my favourite because it is incredibly versatile and can be moulded into different shapes. Just search "Tam hat" on Etsy and you'll find a whole bunch of vintage ones for sale xx

This was a really great story, and I appreciate that you dressed the way you wanted to even though at the time it was different from what other girls were wearing. My biggest idol has always been Marilyn Monroe with Grace Kelly as a close second. You should make a video showing your vintage wardrobe, it sounds like you have great pieces and I would love to know your styling tips for a complete vintage look.!

I would love to! I have a bit of repro and vintage here that I will share. The bulk of my best pieces are in Aus so I'll have to do another vid later this year when I get my hands on it :)

Gosh I was just thinking about this the other day.... I was so into the flare jeans trend here in QLD. I envied a friend who had some perfectly HUGE platform shoes. I thought skinny jeans were so 80s and so lame and looked terrible. Kudos to you for sticking to your guns because now I feel the opposite, flares UGH, hahah. I'll just hide when it comes back around. My interest in vintage is a slow burn in terms of style, much more recent. It's hard when I'm too lazy to do my hair :( But I loved Tippi Hedren growing up however, I was like 8 and watching The Birds over and over. Then you sort of get into other films once you're not averse to older vintage films but I'd say my knowledge has a long way to go for films.
@MissBeeTownsend7 жыл бұрын
Oh! Tippi Hedren! I haven't watched Alfred Hitchcock in soooo long! Yeah, it does take practice to get to a point where the hair and make up is quick enough to do everyday. Even then, it is a time investment. But, there's nothing wrong with saving it for your going out look :) I spend half my time being a vintage enthusiast and the other half running around in sportswear when I have a CBF day! Polar-opposites 😂
