I've heard good things about the Audio-Technica. It's hard to tell, but are your speakers on the same surface as your turntable? If so, you may want to consider moving them. Placed in close proximity to a turntable, speakers could cause problems. The vibrations could be transferred to your turntable, causing a distortion in sound. Cheers, Frank

I've heard you talk about the reverse feature (ability to play records backwards) on your turntable in a couple of videos and I thought I would just hand you this little bit on info. Aside from being able to decode all the backwards lyrics on some well known records, it is probably more meant for "back cueing" records when in a DJ environment. For example, if I'm doing a live show and I'm playing a song from another turntable or CD or whatever, I will be able (with the right mixer) cue up the next record by dropping the needle and listening until it gets to the part where I want to start playing it. Then I would reverse the record half a spin, and stop. Now when it's time for the song to play, I just turn up that channel and hit Start, and away it goes.... all without touching the platter. Cheers, and great videos! Subbed.

I plan on getting this table and using the preamp as well. If I ever get a high quality external preamp, I may do the sugary to remove the one built into the table. Not an issue for me as I'm used to taking things apart and putting them back together and rewiring and even some designing of electronics. My receiver is basically the big brother to yours, it looks like, the Yamaha RX-V361. And my 5.1 surround sound setup are KLH speakers I got around 16 years ago. Nothing too high end, but they sound decent enough to me. The motor on my current table (a lower end Sony, the PS-LX250H) burnt out, so that's why I'm looking for something a little nicer. Cheers.

As I mentioned above, I just discovered the sub can take Hi Level speaker input. (Now how much noise this introduces, ???). Anyway, I now figure his main stereo bookshelfs are on his A switch and the B L/R is out to the Hi Level in on the sub. But I'm just guessing. I'm curious about the "Hi Level" thing. Does this render the built in amp passive, or is the receiver out being 'dummied' or stepped down to Line, then fed to the built in amp. I guess it's the second one, since the volume on the sub is still actively controlling the sound.

Nice set up Jarod! My set up is pretty unique (I think) when I see what people have. I DJ, but still, not like how the typical DJ set up looks either. Signal path: Technics sl1200 mk5 TT with Ortofon Nightclub MkII concorde needle--Allen & Heath Zone:92 mixer---Radial MC3 monitor control---M Audio BX8 L+R 5 feet off ground, KRK Rokit 8 L+R on floor (on isolators), and Yamaha SW-P270 Sub on floor (on isolator). Active speaker set-ups inherently have a sound quality limit, which is quite high and easy to achieve. Passive can sound incredible, but crossovers dealing with amplified signals are often under developed and/or poorly calibrated at the manufacturing level to achieve it. My Radial unit has balanced outs (L/R x 2), and an unbalanced Sub out, with separate volume control. With the active speakers and sub, sound is transparent, detailed, abundant, and also serves as my entertainment centre through my Teac DAC via optical/SPDIF/USB. It's a beautiful thing!

I just purchased the MB 42x's and love the sound. I feel that small, high quality bookshelf speakers have an advantage over large towers. There is a certain focused, tight and controlled experience that can't be equaled will larger speakers. The MB 42's use quality drivers and look very elegant in my opinion. A good tight sub that matches well( as the pioneer that you have) completes the full sound. Great for jazz and well recorded music like Sade or Steely Dan. I love your style and it's really making me consider a turntable!

So you said your speakers are 75 watts and the sub you connected to the OTHER channel... Did you connect both the Speakers on ONE channel, and the woofer on the OTHER ? So is like your woofer playing one part of the Stereo Mix the and the Speakers ? Or your speakers are L&R A and the sub on the B. And if that is the case is the Amp powering both? PS. Isn't the Subwoofer Active? means it has its OWN amp? I think you would be better with a larger amp that has a dedicated Subwooder Pre-Out.
@matrixplace8 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree, connecting two speakers on one channel and the sub on the other is ridiculous. Just checked the receiver and there is not option for sub-woofer to be connected. He is trying to play full range signal from a sub-woofer... The woofer is also self powered and I dont really know how it's working at all. Shame on the owner of the video showing so many wrong things...
@jasonschubert68288 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you should check all components before assuming the setup is incorrect. As the sub has high level inputs and its own crossover it would work perfectly, and you could switch it on or off just using the speaker b switch. Best of both worlds in my opinion.
@dotita18 жыл бұрын
This receiver has connections for two pairs of speakers. I think he connected the two bookshelf speakers to the Speaker A left+right and the subwoofer to the Speaker B left+right outputs. He said "channel" but it is not correct. The channel is the separate way of signals to the left and right speakers, these two separate channel make the stereo sound.
@avehein7 жыл бұрын
I had the same thought when he said that. If it is one of the integrated amps then he should have a sub output. If just a stereo receiver then I guess it would have to be the B speakers. Integrated also has the phono input which is a nice touch. On the bright side it sounds like he will have a great excuse to buy a new receiver later.
@avehein7 жыл бұрын
Donald Lentz not really sure what you're on about to be honest, at least in regards to what I was saying anyways. That being said most a/v receivers have sub outs today, but a lot of stereo receivers lack this. I found this to be rather upsetting not too long ago when moving to an integrated from my surround receiver. My first audio setup didn't have a separate sub and the bass was fine, but I won't ever do it again. Much like you I'm not bass crazy and don't want the house to shake (unless watching movies), but having a separate sub allows plenty of control for turning that down while providing the added bonus of having all the power from my amp going to the mids and treble on my speakers. I'm an Infinity guy and since those are power hungry I'd rather not be wasteful.

Did you remove the phono preamp of the audio technica ? I just did it yesterday and soldered up the connections and it sounds better than ever through my Sansui AU 317 MK2 !!!
@vinyleyezz8 жыл бұрын
+Adrien Perié nice! Nah I haven't yet, does it really make a big difference in sound? Also what preamp do you use?
@adrienperie61198 жыл бұрын
Vinyl Eyezz Yes, it sounds much less tiny, it's more clear and natural, also: volume increases significantly, so your amp isn't going to be working as much. I use the phono preamp stage that the Sansui has which is amazing, you'd need to spend a thousand dollars US to get something as good as that today once fully refurbished, and I got it for less than 200 (it was built in Japan in 1979). But a 50$ preamp brand new will beat the one in the AT120 by miles, you'll see yourself the tiny board with tiny capacitors that your signal goes through even if you switch it to phono. Ripping it out of there would have felt great if I hadn't been so afraid of messing up !. Don't do it if you use the USB function though unless you have a USB out on your amp, since it's on that board. I might have to replace some of the capacitors and resistors inside that Sansui soon, as vintage amps tend to have the liquid electrolyte dry out of the caps, but for now I'm just enjoying the sound as is ! I also enjoy the idea I'm not getting 100% sound right away and will have to work on it down the road, especially since the sound as is is already so good. For the audio technica, if you're gonna do it I recommend watching the KZbin video about it some guy made, since there are things you need to be careful about (I first did it just splicing the wires together to check if it worked well before opening it again and doing the bit of soldering). Be really really careful not to lose those god damn brass spacers under the screws, lift the cover as slow and straight as you can, holding the wire in your mouth to help it through (unless you have 3 hands or a spare friend). Also, remove the insulation from the wire far back enough, and careful not to cut all that silver "shielding" inside the wire as it is actually the ground which you'll need to twist together and solder. Make sure your amp has a ground in because if you remove the board, you'll have to prolong the ground wire that used to go to the board and make it go out of the turntable to ground it, otherwise, major major buzzing. It's the black one coming out from under that spring. I soldered it to a thick single strand copper wire and made it go out through the same place as the phono wires (I made the hole bigger in that black plastic clamp which was mashing those wires actually). I have very very little noise, I basically need my amp to be at 60% throttle for it to start being noticeable when not playing anything. In my opinion, it's worth it if you're a bit of a tinkerer, and great sense of accomplishment when you flip the thing on and it still works and sounds great ! As long as you ever did a bit of soldering, you'll be fine (you can splice the wires and it will work, but in my case I had noise on the right channel until I did the proper soldiering. I also just received a Shure M44-7 today, and it is so much more sensitive than the AT95 the table came with ! I might get myself an ortofon red or concorde in future, as I like the idea of not having to fiddle with it and just twist it on, plus they look pointy and awesome (I need one that handles scratch since my objective is ultimately doing a bit of mixing and scratching, and also not damaging my records too much listening to them, and scratch heads are light and yet track very well). For me, the vintage amp and the tinkering just adds to the fun. To the frustration too sometimes, but then what a release when you realize you did good ! :P Love your channel btw, I might have to copy that wall idea of yours, I'll see if I can get away with using double side tape or transparent suction cups.

@ANGRYmuffin90008 жыл бұрын
I'm interested on vinyl but I can only listen to music using headphones, is that even a viable set up?
@bitbat98 жыл бұрын
ANGRYmuffin9000 Yes you can use headphones. Most receivers have a 1/4 inch jack which you can plug your headphones into although you'll probably need a 3.5mm to 1/4 inch adaptor.
@blueboyblue8 жыл бұрын
+ANGRYmuffin9000 - - it depends on what you mean by 'viable'. As has been pointed out, the amp, and most amps, will have a Headphone out. Now if you just need headphones there are headphone amps, but they tend to be limited and only have one input, and they can tend to the expensive side considering what you get. A Stereo amp, while you will only start using it with headphones, will take you a lot farther into the future. It gives you multiple inputs, typically also with Digital Inputs, and in the future when you are able to add speakers, it will be ready to go. There are better more expensive Yamaha Amps and Receivers to consider, so to some extent it is down to your working budget. Yamaha always represent High Value, you get a lot of good quality amp for a modest amount of money and a lot of extra features. On a broad cross section, it is hard to beat Yamaha amps. Yes, there are better amps, but if you want them, then plan on spending more money and getting less amp. For those on a budget, Yamaha can really maximize your money.

Do you need a receiver or could you just connect the turntable to the speakers ?
@vinyleyezz8 жыл бұрын
+MrHamsterboy2000 You need some sort of amplifier/receiver to boost the signal before going to the speakers. Or you could get an "Active" speaker which has the amplifier built inside it.

How did you connect your subwoofer ? Did the micca speakers come with speaker wires And how did you connect your TV ? Sorry for all the questions
@vinyleyezz9 жыл бұрын
I connected the subwoofer to the receiver. The receiver has 2 channels, 100 watts each, so the first channel goes to my bookshelf speakers and the second channel goes to the subwoofer! The Micca speakers I bought separately and they didn't come with speaker wire, so I had to buy that too. I got 16 gauge. I connected the tv to the receiver with a simple RCA cable, that way I can play CD's! Hope this helps! Take care!

Cool set up. I subscribed to your channel after watching your "Top 5 Reasons Not to buy a Crosley" video. Just one tip, try to find a vintage Marantz receiver in the 22xx series. The lower wattage ones aren't that expensive and they are very easy to find in LA. I have a 2220B and a 2238b. Jaws drop when my friends hear them for the first time.

Nice setup, although being from the sixties my speakers need to be big before i register them as sounding big. I have the same turntable and found some records not all were sounding quite limp. Sometimes i would have to turn them up way above cd level and they,would still,sound gutless. So i decided to bypass my receivers preamp and also,the built in record player preamp and buy a stand alone unit called ART DJPRE II Phono Preamplifier . Heard a lot of good reviews on this and i have to tell you the difference is remarkable for 119 dollars australian. Led zep,actually sounds like led zep now. Love your channel keep going.

Thanks, I enjoy your lectures, really helpful. Now, I'm planning to buy the LP-120 turntable. My audio setup is mainly a powered amp Behringer connected to passive speakers. My question is: can I connect the LP-120 to my amp which doesn't have a phono amp in? Or I need another receiver with a built-in phono amp? Thanks

Do you find if you put any pressure on the turntable from either scratching or cleaning records, that you hear some noise like the motor chugging a little?
@vinyleyezz9 жыл бұрын
+Kingro619 I've only experienced the motor chugging every once in a while when it first starts up. Other than that it's been alright!
@Kingro6199 жыл бұрын
Vinyl Eyezz Damn.. It always happened with the one I bought so they replaced it but now the new one I got, you can hear the motor constantly when it's spinning. Going to just ask for a refund cause that's the second faulty one but won't know what to replace it with. Thanks for the fast response. Keep up the vids!

what kind of parts do you need for all of these? i know i need wire and banana plugs but how would i connect them to the receiver

+Mr Yikes I basically just used 16 Guage Speaker Wire from Amazon to connect from the Receiver to the Speakers. I thought they would need banana plugs, but it turned out that the wire could just be threaded onto the connections.

Hey love the videos man!!! So if I have the LP120 and I want to connect it to a receiver, do I connect it to the phone input? Or should I use the CD input??
@armanimarco7 жыл бұрын
Please put the speakers on standalone stands, they will sound better, and the vibration from the woofer will not interfere with the turntable, so in general better sound quality! Have you ever tried a tube amp?

So I have my crosley turntable (I know I'm getting a better one soon!) Plugged into my don't DAV-HDX466 home theater receiver which is hooked up to its 4 speakers plus it's subwoofer. Is this an adequate set up? Picked it up at a pawn shop and it sounds amazing actually

you said you had your bookshelf speakers running off of one channel and the sub on the second channel, does that mean you're doing two speakers playing in mono? or are both speakers playing left or right channel audio?

Hey Vinyl Eyezz, I'm a newbie at this but I'm confused at what role the receiver plays in the setup. Does the turn table not have output for an amplifier then to the speakers or does it broadcast the sound?
@vinyleyezz9 жыл бұрын
+SuperUgybug The turntable sends out a small electrical signal from the built in preamp, but it needs to be boosted for us to hear it. The receiver acts like a giant booster that amplifies the signal and then sends it out the connected speakers. I have a video about the whole process called "Record Player Gear: 5 Things you Need" be sure to check it out and it'll explain everything!
