Wow I didn’t no this day existed but that’s cool 😄 I really enjoyed Mrs Dalloway and the Hours by Michael Cunningham but didn’t enjoy Release which is another reinterpretation by Patrick Ness (he added a ghost for no reason). I loved the letter of Vita and Virginia they have some of the most romantic passages I have read of all time. I just finished a buddy read of a room of one’s own. It really sparked discussion between us comparing it from then and now. I loved this overview of her books you gave though and especially the uk collection very pretty 🥰

I love how much you love Virginia Woolf! I have a fairly eclectic mix of editions - mostly (older) vintage, wordsworth editions, and penguin. Some I have read but don't have physical copies of, and others I own but haven't yet read! I really need to get to Orlando next. My favourite is The Waves, but I can definitely understand your love for Mrs Dalloway, it's a really wonderful book.

I am so happy this video came up in my feed today! I watched your review of Woolf’s novels yesterday and decided to pick up Mrs Dalloway and To The Lighthouse as my first Woolf! I will be purchasing the UK vintage set

Awesome! 🎉📚 I think the Harcourt Brace editions were the first V Woolf I owned too so weirdly I can't see the covers as not pretty because they have sentimental value - but I can recognise objectively that they aren't the prettiest. 😂 But yeah those Vintage editions 😍 I've never even thought about typesetting before. That's so interesting. One thing I forgot to talk about in regards to our Katharine Smyth talk was how she noted at the end how there are different versions of To the Lighthouse - something I never realised before and I don't know how much the versions differ. Another thing I forgot to mention was how there's a short story by Greg Johnson called "To the Madhouse" about an academic who time travels to the past when Woolf has just completed The Years. They discuss the legacy of her work and how The Years isn't considered her best because it's a reversion to a more conventional realism. So it's an interesting way of thinking about literary legacy and how the subject which is most important to the author might not be the most important to the reading public. When I reread Orlando last year I was struck by how funny it is too. I read Night and Day and I agree that it's good but definitely not as memorable as the more famous books. 🌊 ❤️🌊 ❤️ I would looove to talk about The Waves with you when you reread! This was all so wonderful. And thank for reminding me I really ought to read Francine Prose.

@@KendraWinchester Oh I don't think there was a different ending for To the Lighthouse. Smyth wrote in the afterward something about variations on the text after publication and some slight changes Woolf made which show the characters in different ways. When I'm home again I'll look up what she actually wrote at the end of her book. And wow, if I heard that before about Fates and Furies I'd forgotten it. I loved that novel.

Love publishing nerd videos! Never read an Virginia Woolf but your enthusiasms is inspiring. The only one I've tried reading was Mrs Dalloway quite a while ago but I wasn't in a mindset to enjoy a stream of consciousness novel. I was really into plot driven novels at the time. A Room of One’s Own sounds more like something I'd be drawn to, must stop putting it on the backburner and read it sometime :D I hope you'll plan a Woolf inspired works video? Maybe for next year's Dalloways day :D Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm :D

Hi-I just checked their site and they currently have A Room of Own’s Own. For the other two since they are not part of their current roster, I would check eBay or any used bookstore that has collectibles. I think I bought To The Lighthouse from eBay and love it. Hope that helps.

Kendra I LOVED this video 💜📚😊 I am so jealous of your letters between Vita and Virginia book - its so hard to get hold of for a decent price in the UK as it isn't in print. I've heard such good things about it. And I'm glad you mentioned Virginia Woolf's humour because I think she can be so sharp and witty and in her writing and I love her dry sense of humour 💜

Great video! Interesting - my views on the Vintage editions chime with yours. The book & cover designs are so gorgeous! However, I didn’t like the text block - looks a little cramped to me - and I thought reading would be slightly uncomfortable, so I haven’t bought them for that reason. I don’t have a uniform edition, all my VW books are very random. ‘Between The Acts’ was apparently in a very advanced state of publication & was with the publishing house for typesetting before she died. However, she was having second thoughts about it & had decided not to publish it. Leonard decided to go ahead with publication after her death. I’m going through all the books at a rate of one a year. This year ‘Night and Day’ is on my list as it is its 100th anniversary.

Hey I'm doing a thesis now on her short nonfiction writings! I adore her, such wit. I am in Aus so I've picked up some of those American Harcourts, Oxfords, and some UK Penguins. I love the Penguin modern classics... It makes sense now but the Harcourt annoys because the print is so shiny, and unclear, like a photocopy--but I guess that's exactly what it is? It's good to know re. typesetting. Looked through different lenses regarding her critical writing projects, even some of her early novels seem experimental. So I can't wait to read those first two novels too. Have you heard of the new Vita and Virginia film? :)

Your video is so inspiring. Virginia Woolf, have to start reading her in earnest. At some point I read more about her than what she actually had written. On another note, did you ever watch the film Orlando, that had Tilda Swinton in it? Did you like it?

Hi Kendra! I'm reading the biography by Quentin Bell right now and was planning on reading her books in publication order after that, but after seeing this video and the length of some of her earlier novels, I'm starting to have doubts. What would you recommend? I have never read anything by her before. Wonderful video btw! Right now I just pick up every second hand book by her I come across, but if I like her books I'm definately going to buy the Vintage editions. Funnyly enough the editions I find of her books are all the silver Penguin modern classics, which are actually quite beautiful.

Over a year late on this one, but I'm just getting caught up on your back videos! I adore Virginia Woolf (even with her problematic views on race and class). I have found that Etsy is a great place to find weird old 1st additions of her books. Have you read her journals? They come in a beautiful set and really demonstrate her wit and her heartbreaking sorrow. Leonard compiled all of her entries about writing in a single volume called A Writers Diary (I think...?). If you have not read them -- do so. Amazing journey through her mind. I have to say Mrs Dalloway was my favorite until I heard Nicole Kidman's audiobook version of To The Lighthouse. Stunning. I also really enjoyed The Years, but I hold an unpopular opinion. It's uneven, but the great bits are just crystalline and aching.

The Waves is my favourite shortly followed by The Years and I don't know why people don't like The Years as imo it's a much more refined and poignant evolution of what she was doing in Mrs Dalloway which everyone loves. Confusing.
