Excellent video, a tremendous snapshot of the way the city centre was in 1989. I don't know if you've been back since, or have been back recently, but as you mentioned, a lot has changed since this video. The huge Liverpool One development, taking over the whole of Paradise Street and much of the area by Chavasse Park, has transformed the city centre and also bridged the gap between the Albert Dock and the city centre. It makes videos like this so important, to remember what the city looked like before such a huge transformation. Thanks for posting.

Trevor, sorry I missed all these nice coments back a few years ago. Where have I been! A belated thank you for your nice reply. Yes, I was back there a couple of years ago (2018). I was amazed at the transormation of the city center. I walked around like a kid in a candy store going 'Oh my gosh' at every turn in the road. I think the younger generation really enjoy the change, but old fogies like me (80) long for the nostalgia of the old Liverpool and its gritty, dirty, smelly streets that hold so many memories of our childhood. Let me hear back if you are still in the loop. God bless.

Great video - I was working in the Tate Gallery at the Albert Dock in 1989 - the last year I lived in Liverpool before moving to that London. Great memories!

Glad you enjoyed the video camdenguy. I can't believe it's been thirty years since making that video. Seems like only yesterday. I was born in Liverpool in 1940, so I've seen the whole transformation of this great city over the span of eighty years. I love and miss the old Liverpool, but I'm happy for those who are now prospering in what I now concider a new and beautiful shiny city. And I hope you prospered in your move to London too. You have a great day. Frank

Feels more familiar than today, was 4 then but I remember when the city felt like that, before the internet, before the capital of culture boom, I miss the calmness or maybe that's just in my head!
@frankrossiter5 жыл бұрын
No, James, it's not just in your head. I think most of us miss the old Liverpool. There was something special about those days that is no longer there. It may be just nostalgia; our youth, family closeness during hard times. Liverpool is a beautiful city of culture now, that attracts people from all over the world and maybe we had to give up that something special in order for that to happen. What do you think? Frank

That's so weird. I just said how calm it looked then, and it's not That long ago. Today I find it quite manic and sometimes claustrophobic..I don't think it's in our head's, or wishful thinking, even the scallywag lads were a different kettle of fish... 😊👍🏼

@@julienorton1067 Haha, yeah I think mostly people are the same and still great, but I think the internet has added to all of our problems in a way. Can never switch off! Or at least it can be hard to.

Thank you, Greasy Stranger. It's funny you mentioned about the lack of cars. I remember in the 40's, if a car came down our street, the whole neighborhood came out to see who it was. If anyone came home in a taxi, well, that was really a big deal in those days. You have a nice day. Frank

Thanks, Mctree's. Yes, those three boys fighting was one of my favorite shots. Wish I could locater those boys and see how they are doing. They'll be in their fourtees and may even have grandchildren. I love the new Liverpool but miss the old too. Take care, my friend. Frank

Cheers for the upload Frank. I wasn't yet born not until 1992, but it's great to get a glimpse of how it was back in the 80s. Liverpool today is still good, no matter how it changed in terms or architecture etc, just society that's a lot different.

Thank you, Bloop, for your nice comment. I was born in 1940 when the bombing of Liverpool was taking place. By the time it was all over, the city was in a right mess. I believe She is now one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Hope you take a look at the many more videos I have up on youtube. Have a great day. Frank

Fantastic video. I was 19 back then, the video shows the nicer parts of Liverpool during that time. In reality, to sum up Liverpool in those days, there were alot of run down slums, grafiti, high unemployment, no investment. The city suffered serious neglect by the tory government althrough the 1980s. The play Boys From the Black Stuff gives a more true reflection of what life was like in Liverpool in the 1980s. Thankfully Liverpool is a fantastic city today,all them slums are now gone.

@xxleannebabyxx Thanks once again for your comments. I posted a reply to your other comment too. I sailed away from Liverpool for the last time when I was 17 but got back to visit about every four years. I am now 71 so I've seen a lot of changes in my city. I do miss my childhood memories and wrote a book about them called Frankie Boy. I hope you can get it at the library, otherwise order on line. It's a great read and will bring back lots of fond memories for your parents and grandparents.

@xxleannebabyxx Liverpool 8, Dingle, Toxteth area was my home turf. The Dock Rd. up to the Pier Head was where I did most of the damage. I loved to jump on a skip and hand on till it stopped. The docks are all gone now, but they've done a good job revitalising it all. Toxteth still looks like a bit of a dump though my street and tenements are long gone. They pretty much captured my hood in 'Morning In The Street.' on youtube. Look it up. Take care, Frank

It's like going back to another world because this was the city centre a few years before it started turning into the shithole it is today. At the time, I enjoyed going into town rather than endure it. I didn't like the new Clayton Square shopping centre, though, because that just fucking destroyed Clayton Square. Liverpool has changed too fucking much over the years and not for the fucking better either!

No homeless people or people begging for money around then
@frankrossiter5 жыл бұрын
No, Robert, you are right. However, there were many families who were poor and in need of assistance then. Many factories like Tate & Lyle closing up shop and moving to London. Jobs were scarce. What's happening in Liverpool right now, I believe, may be due to the widespread use and availability of drugs. Like alcoholism, drug addiction is a killer of the soul and spirit of a human being. In my own country, you only have to look at places like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Baltimore, etc. Many, if not most, of our homeless, is due to the drug culture and alcohol. We in the U.S. have the lowest unemployment in history right now; millions of job positions unfilled. Yet we have the most people living like animals on our streets. It is the sadest thing I have ever witnessed in my eighty years. Thanks for your reply, Robert. Frank
