Same thing happened to me . These two younger guys had tech installer white shirts on . I talked them down to 60 dollars . Once I got home the speakers were all in the box with wiring and brackets but sounded terrible . I ended up putting it back in the box and giving it away . Then I googled it and saw I’d been scammed by the white van speaker scam .

About 20 years ago, I was approached by two guys in a white van wanting to sell me speakers in the local grocery store parking lot. My creep-o-meter spiked and told me they were up to no good, so I refused their offer and I quickly walked to my car and I drove away. I was approached two more times with the same scam and I either refused them before they could say anything or I laughed at them. The last time I was approached was about 12 years ago, only this time, it was two guys driving a four wheeler truck asking me if I wanted to buy a surround sound system. I pissed them off by asking them why they weren’t driving around in a white van asking me to buy speakers from them. But seriously, if someone wants to sell you anything in a parking lot, don’t fall for it, because it is always a scam.

I worked for one of these groups for 1 day when I first moved to Denver and they advertised the job on CL as an AV installer which I had experience with. Once I found out what they did and didn’t recognize any of the brands, I quickly wanted out. The owner begged me to stay cuz I had a young fresh face lol.. they literally have a corporate warehouse that makes all these fake brand name systems JUST FOR this scam.. crazy.. and they have brand names that sound close to reputable ones.. I watched the guy I rode with make $1000 in one day cash. Sickening

iPhones are made in China. What is wrong with China? Yes, it doesn't matter if it was pure gold bricks being sold for a few dollars, you don't buy it out of a van in a parking lot. That "little voice" should have been a welling of absurdity. It's also not illegal to sell things for more than it's worth. That's how retail works and there's nothing done there that couldn't have been done at a garage sale. Additionally, nothing will ever be a "deal" unless you personally know what a "deal" is. In the real world, what do the top-end speakers sell for? If you don't know that, every "deal" is going to be a scam. Finally, nothing is worth less than what they could sell it for on Ebay. That's the bottom line. If you're getting something for 10% of cost, what was preventing someone from selling it on Ebay for more? Why is somebody giving you a great deal out of the goodness of their heart suddenly?

@jonathanhiener24638 жыл бұрын
Man, if stinks that you got burned by the scam, but I'm glad that you're letting people know about it, and to follow one's intuition. Unfortunately, this actually IS legal. In most cases, the vendor is just selling cheap garbage for lots of money, which isn't actually illegal. They occasionally are busted by selling unsafe (noncompliant electrically) products or by making the brochures have a real audio magazine's name, which then infringes copyright. So, that makes this all the harder to de with, is that it is legal, just a really scummy and manipulative move.
