I feel like a lack of subtlety is one of the best courses of actions to take when dealing with someone who isn't out of the closet yet. Shows you don't particularly care, you just want to know. The best approach however is just waiting till they say something and making it clear that it's normal and no big deal. My older cousin told me he was gay while we were playing videogames and I just said "I know" and we kept playing. (Also Steven Universe rocks. Season 4 finale was awesome)
