But more than anything, she was the wife not the girlfriend. Did he never introduce her to his family or tell her what they did? The only explanation I can think of is that Keiichi suspected his wife was only with him for money and not for love. But this however goes in contrast with his attempt to make her stay with him after Tanaka had "taken" her, asking her for more time... The alternative to this is simply a lack of plot in underplaying an important aspect.

The ex-girlfriend tried to take advantage of the MC, but didn't try to get back together with him, even acknowledging Yui as a "beautiful woman" in his life. Normally, the ex would just say "I know you want me... Who's THIS bitch!?" And the rival, himself, actually had more complex reasons than just "I'm better because my dad is X" or "You're just a dropout!" or "I'm popular and you're not! That means I win!". He feared Keiichi's revenge. That was brought about by his own actions towards Keiichi, and makes a lot of sense! Keiichi could've sworn that he wouldn't mix personal matters with professional obligations, but Mr. Tanaka wouldn't _be capable_ of believing him, due to the sheer magnitude of disrespect he had for Keiichi, both professionally and personally. Most believable circumstances I've seen in a while. Not PERFECT nor GREAT, but if the normal antagonist-writing was a "5/10", this was about a 7/10.
