Sounds like grief drove her insane. She always thought she would have time to get over her ex and bff's betrayal and eventually reconcile, but when they dies she realized she would never have that chance and doubted everything in her life. She sounds like she spiralled and then had a bad therapist who made it worse for her. She couldn't pull herself out of it. Nonetheless she is responsible for everything she did. Depression is no excuse to hit your partner, verbally mistreat them, or to betray them. She is so consumed with grief and guilt that she basically stopped caring about OP as a person. I think this is a lesson on the need for effective counseling. A good therapist would have helped her focus on coming to terms with her grief, not on what she feels would make her feel better. That's just inviting mindless self-indulgence and self-destruction. She needs to confront her feelings, accept them, and then let go and move on. OP did the right thing. He should have left after she hit him, but it's better late than never. I hope he finds a better partner and she finds a better counselor.

I'm wondering if she(the wife) might have been in contact (even sleeping with) her ex the whole time until he died. And that 'counselor' sounds like a fraud or one of her friends pretending to be a professional. All the conversations sounded 1-sided and 2 vs.1 with OP being on the defensive the whole time.

Why did he even entertain the idea of making it work? Not talking about the half-open marriage BS, but as soon as she said "I resent being married" i would have been "I have just the cure" and filed for divorce. After all the emotional and verbal abuse(culiminating in physical abuse) she brought him, and then SHE is the one who hates being married? Financial abuse as well if she wasnt clear about wanting to be a Houswife.

She wanted to hunt for a new life (or recapture her life with her Ex) on his dime, and using that to find happiness or to resolve what she wasn't able to with the ex using the new guys before returning to her stable life. Either way is selfish and cruel towards him. (unless her reasoning was just a lie and she just wanted to be a stay at home with who was "free" to be a slut, based on what happened afterwards I don't think this was the case.)
