State Of Mind with Maurice Benard

State Of Mind with Maurice Benard

Күн бұрын

This week my wife, Paula, joins me to share her truth being married to me and some of the tough moments that we’ve lived through.
State of Mind:
State of Mind to me means being 100% present, feeling completely at peace inside of you, not letting your thoughts control your life and always looking for ways to be the best that you can be.
This will be the first in a series here on KZbin, however you can learn more about State Of Mind at www.mbstateofm....
If you'd like to learn more about my life, I've recently released "Nothing General About It - How Love (and Lithium) Saved Me On and Off General Hospital" www.amazon.com...
--------------------------------------
Film and Television veteran, member of the Actor’s Studio, and two time Emmy Award winner Maurice Benard most recently starred as John Gotti in Lifetime’s acclaimed “Victoria Gotti: My Father’s Daughter,” which aired this year; the horror film “Nightmare Cinema,” with Mickey Rourke, which opened the New York Horror Film Festival certified fresh on rotten tomatoes and was in theatres June 21st; the indie films “Hold On,” and “Equal Standard,” alongside Ice T; and Lifetime’s “A Lover Betrayed.”
Among his other film and television credits are David O’Russell’s critically acclaimed “Joy,” with Robert De Niro and Jennifer Lawrence; “Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter”; “Ruby”; and “Mi Vida Loca.” The indie film “The Ghost and the Whale,” produced by Benard’s wife, Paula, in which he starred as a bipolar man losing the battle with his illness after his wife’s death, was a labor of love underscored by his strong commitment to raise awareness about mental health issues.
Although Benard has always worked out of the spotlight mentoring individuals in mental health crisis, a letter from a young man whose brother committed suicide while struggling with mental illness moved Benard to begin a public commitment to mental health awareness outside the confines of “General Hospital.” In 2009, on “Oprah,” he shared with the world his own bipolar diagnosis at the age of 22 and the ensuing struggle to manage the illness, from surviving a stint in a mental institution as a young man to becoming a television star. Benard’s journey with mental illness has also been profiled in magazines including PEOPLE, LA LIFE, and BP. HarperCollins is publishing his memoir about the journey, Nothing General About It: How Love and Lithium Saved Me On and Off General Hospital on April 7, 2020.
He has also lent his face and voice to numerous organizations to further the cause, including International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF), the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), Mental Health America (MHA) and Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, to name a few. For his contribution to mental health awareness, Benard has received numerous awards, including IBF’s Imagine Award, NAMI’s Lionel Aldridge Award, and the Erasing the Stigma Award alongside Carrie Fischer and Rod Steiger.
In addition to testifying before Congress on mental health issues, Benard’s keynote speaker engagements detailing his experience include the annual conference for The National Manic Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association and to hundreds of students at the University of San Diego.
In August 2018, Benard celebrated 25 years on the award-winning series “General Hospital,” cementing his status as an enduring television icon. The popular character Sonny “Michael” Corinthos, Jr. originated with Benard in 1993, initially written as only a six-month guest arc; however, Benard’s powerful portrayal became wildly popular with fans around the world and the celebrated actor quickly took Sonny from a peripheral to central role in the fictional city of Port Charles. Benard has maintained lead status on “General Hospital” for the past 16 years, garnering nine Emmy Award nominations, in addition to taking the statue home in 2003 and 2019.
Benard was previously on “All My Children” as another popular character, Nico, from 1987-1990.
His many loyal fans have not only tuned in for almost three decades, but also repeatedly nominated Benard for a Soap Opera Digest Award, honoring him as a winner three times. Benard has also received a Prism Award and four Latino Media Arts Award nominations.
Benard’s “General Hospital” character has long been on the forefront of socially relevant issues woven into storylines like AIDS and Alzheimer’s awareness. He also pushed for his character to be diagnosed as bipolar so mental health awareness can be front and center on a daily television platform.

Three minutes in and I had to stop watching. My husband & I started dating when we were 16. We were married for 36 years. He suffered from depression and was bi-polar. Seeing Maurice’s wife struggle to find her words is me talking about my husband. Sadly, my husband’s disease was stronger than him and he died by suicide five years ago. I’m glad you are openly talking about your mental health. I’m always willing to share my husband’s struggles (even his death) with anyone who asks.

@@Areyon1 same as my father, when I was about 3, and my brother was 2. I'm ok-ish mentally, I deal with depression and anxiety. But my brother got into drugs as a teenager, and was then diagnosed bi-polar. To this day (he's 45 now) he still battles many addictions, you name it, he's probably addicted to it. He tries to self medicate, and refuses to take his meds. It's so hard to see, and feel absolutely helpless. BUT Mo gives me a LOT of hope that maybe someday my brother will come through the tunnel, and actually see the light at the end.

I remember the first time GH was going to present Sonny as being BP and what a big deal it was in the Soap press. I wondered then and I still wonder, how difficult it is for you to portray Sonny during one of his manic/depressed states. Or is it healing and cathartic to play these story lines? I personally think you are very brave to tackle this professionally but I do have to wonder about the personal toll it takes. PS: I believe you are helping numerous people by being so open and vocal about your mental illness. It's so important for people to see individuals who can be successful in life and still have the down days/weeks. Much love from NH. Paula did a fabulous job even if she was nervous!!

I wrote my 1st comment which was so very difficult for me regarding the passing of my husband and how messed up I am. I am NOT positive but yesterday I think I got a response back from Maurice or whoever answers the comments. I couldn't believe it because well nice things don't happen to me. I read the first line which I think said something like you will get through this and BOOM the power goes out and I lose what was written which is par for the course. If there is ANYWAY (if it was ever sent). I could have dreamt it. It could be sent again I would love to read it. I'm just so lost and lonely and sometimes scared. Ok, we will see if it was real or not. Thank you

Shar Jerzyk So very sorry for the loss of your husband. That isn’t the kind of loss that goes away quickly. The pain takes a long time to ease up and dampen. The first year is all anniversaries of the first time you went grocery shopping after his death and the first time you’ve gone to a movie, or the first family gathering. All of these are first hard steps. Know that a complete stranger cares about you and wishes you well.

@@patpionke Thank you for responding Pat but I have no family. My so called best friend of 17years decided to totally BLOW ME OFF 4months after my John passed. I have No one. I was with this man for more than half my life. It was just us. No kids. He was a Vietnam vet and was so afraid of agent Orange etc. There are no family gatherings...no movies. Just being ALONE and Pain and sadness and NOTHING is the same. I don't eat the same. Watch tv the same. Every single thing in my world changed. After my daughter's diagnosis of Autism that I learned she had cormobid diagnosis of ADHD, OCD & Bipolar. It was difficult to deal with her, but we did what we had to do. I loved her & wanted her so, i had to step up to the plate. She was a teenager & being tutored in a library that I picked up the book, "New Hope for Bipolar". Then, I read my diagnosis...I had been Bipolar all of my life & had not been diagnosed. I am Bipolar II. It is difficult to manage & I am blessed with a husband that has remained with me during many episodes of depression & mild mania. We have been married for 37 years. So..it can be done. When someone has an illness do we cut bait or step up to the plate? Thank you for sharing your story...we need to know that we are not alone.

Maurice, These are so helpful to me. My husband takes medication for anxiety and depression and it's been such a struggle for me because when things go wrong he gets very angry. Has never been physically abusive but can be incredibly hurtful. Plus just the constant "drama" of things being off kilter. It's taken me quite awhile to stop internalizing his struggles and realize that they are just his issues - that it's not my fault and there is only so much I can do to help. I used to try to almost turn myself inside out to try to fix things and that resulted in taking care of him so much that I neglected myself. I am finally starting to see that I have to take care of myself too and to sort of "back off" and let him work through some things himself. That actually keeps the peace in our marriage much more. But it's rough and just seeing that one is not alone in their struggles is very helpful.

I read his extraordinary memoir. The moment his wife began speaking, I started crying. This woman is remarkable and deeply inspiring… she understands what “love” truly is: devotion, commitment, compassion and a deep understanding of her husband and his illness. I applaud the raw honesty he shared in his book- which doesn’t make the reader “like” him… at all… sometimes, but we learn to separate the (good) man from the (illness) demons. He speaks the truth: there is no shame in getting help and taking medications that help the brain stabilize. These two together are a force!!! Love you guys! You’re doing such great work! I’m so proud!

Thank you both for being so brave about this subject. I suffer from depression, anxiety, and health anxiety. At times, it’s debilitating. My heart hurts a lot of the time because I know how much my episodes have caused my kids distress. Just, thank you.

I'd just be wanting U to be Sonny ALL THE TIME!😊 Although I can separate the character from the person. I've been a fan since FOREVER and I also struggle with depression/anxiety/ mental/psychological turmoil, and I know how extremely difficult it is at times to cope with the illness, and ppl who don't experience this, REALLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS TO BE THIS WAY!💯 It's really hard to deal with on a daily basis, and for me, my mind stay in a constant, continuous state of chaos, even when nothing major is happening! Sometimes I can see/feel it coming over me and can brace myself for it, and other times it's like being hit by a MAC truck, at full speed from out of nowhere!!!! I almost NEVER feel acceptable to myself. I mean I ALWAYS feel drained and tired and sleep deprived! Concentrating on anything is really difficult at times, and I'm always highly irritated for any reason and for no reason at all. It's just CRAZY!! I'm ALWAYS scared all the time that I'm going to get trapped somewhere waiting to be tortured, no one knowing where I am, and I can't get back home!!!! My level of panic and anxiety is severely high whenever I have to go out away from my home. It's really a draining existence, and on top of all of that, I'm on a boat load of meds, that I DO NOT WANT TO BE ON, and sometimes I go for days without talking them, but the withdrawal ALWAYS keep kick in, and I have to go back on the meds just to not hurt and to be able to cope with life in general. I've been a fan of yours ever since I first saw u as Nico on AMC (I think), and most definitely as SONNY CORINTHOS on GH!!!! I can't say I understand your illness in full, but I most definitely understand some of what u must be feeling whenever you are going through it, and I empathize with you!💯 I've been in therapy for many, Many years and I still don't have the words to explain to my therapist what I go through in a way that he can even SOMEWHAT UNDERSTAND how hard my life is living with PTSD and Demonic dreams, and being scared all the time about EVERYTHING!!. I PRAY THAT GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS AND KEEP U, AND GIVE U THE STRENGTH ALWAYS, TO HAVE THE VICTORY OVER YOUR CONDITION! To God be the glory FOREVER, in Jesus' name, Amen! THANKS FOR SHARING!🥰💯❤️ Plz forgive me if I just want u to be Sonny CORINTHOS, I know that u are a real person and that Sonny is a character that u play, but, when I look at u, I just see SONNY!😁

Maurice What your doing is amazing! Helping people by sharing your experiences just confirms what a special person you are. I met you when you were on AMC when you played Nico and I’ve been watching GH since Genie Francis first appeared. I haven’t missed an episode! I suffer from depression and anxiety as well. Suggestion, read the book “The Power of Now”by Eckhart Tolle. It really helps you focus on the present. It has helped me tremendously along with meditation. You have an amazing wife and support system which is key! Happy Anniversary to you and Paula🥰 thank you for being the beautiful soul that you are! God Bless You and your family! You two are truly blessed to have each other. My husband and I have been married for 21 years ! The disease we dealt with was drug addiction. Many times I thought about giving up, but by the grace of God I found my strength through prayer. Praise God, he is clean now, but the thought is in the back of my mind. He is working hard to stay in the right mindset by working hard, setting life goals and remembering how blessed he is. Thank God for sparing his life!

Maurice, You are my Hero! I know your struggle. My daughter is 47 and was diagnosed at 16 with manic depression, which is now called bi polar. It has been a tough struggle for her and for those who love her. She has been good taking her meds, but after so many years, they stop working and she needs to try new ones. She has been suicidal, tried suicide 3 times, and hospitalized for months. She's also had tremendous anxiety during the pandemic. Thank you for being so honest! I've read your book and reviewed it on Amazon. Thanks for keeping it real! Much Love to you and your lovely Family!

Hi Maurice and Paula, Happy anniversary! My late husband and I had 33 years together. This year would have been our 36th anniversary. You are so brave to talk about your depression and bipolar in public. I've been depressed since I was 3, diagnosed as manic depressive at age 10, had my first ulcer at 15, and didn't realize I was having anxiety attacks until I was 20. They tried a few different medications on me that had the opposite effect, instead of calming me down, I was having screaming meltdowns. I gave up on medication. I think the last medication they gave me is what started my chronic migraines, it caused a burning sensation on the top of my head. My husband was the only one that could calm me down, and now he's gone and I'm all alone. We weren't blessed with children, for years I thought maybe it was for the best. Because I didn't want my children to inherit my mental problems, like my mother, and her mother had problems too. Do your children have your problems? My anxiety attacks are peaking because I'm running out of his life insurance money, and by Halloween I'll be living in my car with my cat, and it's not running. I don't have medical insurance to see a doctor or shrink, or money to either. I've cried everyday since he died, and only get out of bed to eat, bathroom, or feed the cat. I need a lawyer to try to get disability, they turned me down in 2015. And I don't have the money for that either. I can't even try to get a job because of the pandemic, thousands are unemployed from the theme parks, and every other job in Central Florida. I've never told anyone but my husband what I've just written here. I'm anonymous here. But you're famous, and tell everyone what's wrong with you, how brave. ☺️ ☮️ ✌️🖖 😷

God bless you and your wife. Thank you for discussing mental health using this important platform. Please tell your wife her willingness to stretch her comfort zone is appreciated by those dealing with mental illness and for their family members. Both of my brothers dealt with mental health issues (my older brother had schizophrenia and OCD, and my younger brother has OCD, depression, and is on the autism spectrum). Your voice is so important in informing people about mental health and eliminating stigma. You illustrate so beautifully that like other illnesses, it's one facet of life and so much is possible with love and understanding. Your work in helping people be more empathic is a gift to this community.
