Great Stuff Joe !!! I just turned 63 !!but I love your work and your teachings !! My room is a lot smaller than yours !! but lucky for me it sounds very dry and usable.I only do vocals ,and when I sing, I put a blanket over my head !! and then i take a deep breath !!.Seriously I I get great results too !!! My room is only 5 by 3 meters small , but one has to be a bit inventive !!! Good on You Joe Bless You !!!and regards from Switzerland !!

I’m in the Nashville area and probably have the smaller studio for the drum kit I have in there. I also only have 2 bedrooms and when my wife moved in she knew it was staying till the day we got more money to build a addition or building out back. You got me thinking I know the small house absorbs a lot of sound but as I clapped my hands I can hear the drums! I’m going to try and throw a big blanket over them to see if it changes the way I hear my speakers while mixing!

Yay, a longer Joe Gilder video!!! lol. That's going to be a great space Joe! Get yourself a love seat in the back to help tame the low end. Also, your mix position looks pretty good. I know you're thinking of sliding it forward a bit but one thing that I've always read and heard from multiple sources is to have your mix position be located at around 38% away from the front wall of the room, thus keeping you away from the center of the room and also not having you up against the wall. I hope that space works out for you.

Nicely done Joe. I've heard that duvet covers-->comforters on those reflective surfaces work wonders. Just get some from your local "T" store or "W" store" with those command strips and you should be good. I'm in the corner of the basement of my folks house. My biggest things are the wall behind me where the monitors "speak" to that wall which is partially reflective and the hutch that my computer sits on. It's sagging at the top, but it will do for now. I still make music there and mix there also. Nice way to keep the peace at home. Stay strong and keep the videos coming!!!

I really like your videos Joe, you have a really good radio voice too. I do this stuff for fun and not for a living (although I'm a traditional broadcast engineer). I did the same thing when my kids were smaller to give them more play space. I moved my set up to a smaller 5th bedroom that is 14x16 or so that has its own full bath. Its a multi function room as I have dozen guitars on the walls and 6 in a stage rack, 5 half stack config 4x12, a couple of combos, Studio RTA deck. Aurlex treatments. I keep a twin bed in there (crashed on it many times) . I'm in the process of redoing the room but I know I can make it work. I do have an issue with outside sound entering through the windows when the neighbors landscaping people cut their grass that I need a better solution for. I'm sort of back in the HS game after giving up the ghost a few years back with all the headaches I got with Sona PE. I went with S1 4.5 Pro, 1824C, FP8 etc and in the process of a secondary DAW with Apollo Twin. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3zTk2RmZq1rq6c . Keep up the good work and I'm certain I'll be watching more of your videos...good stuff man!

Bobby Owsinski who has a lot of expierence in building studios recommends this set up : Basstraps for the corners especially where the monitors are. Absorbers at your sidewalls and at the roof (or a carpet for the floor) for the listening position and the backwall which is facing the monitors you have to use diffusors and NOT absorbers. He uses bookshelves as diffusors (Linda Perry does it also in her studio) and you have to load these up with all kind of stuff. They will give you the same effect like real diffusor panels which are pretty expensive.

Joe, have U considered Multimedia's ARC 2 (Acoustic Room correction), comes with a reference mic! I've employed in my room & it's made all the difference in my mixes translating to other systems! Would be super helpful especially since U need to adapt to so many different rooms!
@royglennie5 жыл бұрын
I think this is fine, as you said if you need a larger tracking room for drums etc then you have that next door and it's good to monitor while recording or setting up from another room anyway. Your electrics I believe you go direct a lot of the time anyway (wasn't it eleven rack you had?) And for acoustics and vocals you already proved in the 'bedroom recording' video that this can work well in the small room. Look forward to seeing the next steps and first recordings you make here.

Nice video Joe. Tip; By tillting the speakers upwards a bit, you can avoid standing waves too.l. Use the tilt to make sure vocalists are singing (aka standing) at the right height, the most imortant part. ( I do this with my eyes closed). I don't care what they say about this comment , try it..... people spend way too less time on positioning their speakers, and that's excactly where the magic happens. I learned to have fun doing it, because you're training your ears on reflections as well., and how to use them if necessary.

Make sure you air it out a couple times a day, fresh air. It is small, you have tons of stuff in there that may be off gassing, especially the acoustic wall treatment? My biggest complaint with having a small room 12'x13' is the heat generated by the board, computers, rack gear, and amps as I record. Once everything is on and the door is closed you gain about 5 degrees F per hour. Window AC unit is not an option due to noise levels, so i can only do things for about two hours before I tap out. Am I the only one...?
@Fezzler615 жыл бұрын
Me too. And dust. The outboard equipment seems to attract it. And chord management. Once all set up, fine. Change or add something, major hassle. Love my dogs, big barrier to home studio tracking.

Yay! I have more studio space than you now (heehee). It will be interesting to see some vids on how you deal with smaller room acoustics, recording, and other similar issues. BTW, when the door opened my first reaction was "Oooooh :)" BTW2: I LOVE your shirt! Where can I get similar ones? Last thing: Couple questions: Could you do a video on why some engineers prefer to have their monitors turned sideways rather than standing up like yours are? Also, why aren't your monitors angled toward your ears rather than straight?

The room you're in now is so dead! Sounds great on your voice! Small rooms rock sometimes. My home studio has been in very large rooms, then living rooms, now a spare bedroom, and this has been the easiest to actually control.
