I just started this 2 days back, setting start & finish time to practice guitar & to learn recording & mixing

"The trouble is, you think you have time" - Buddha. Time management is one of the main reasons why people fail in their chosen careers. And if you are self-employed, it is even more difficult: since you are not a "nine-to-fiver", you are always under the illusion that you can pull another all-nighter to get back on track. Like you said: "you only have so many hours in a day/week" Use them wisely. Great videos, Joe.

To add to Joe's comments: I have a pretty busy job and being at the top of the food chain, I get emails FROM EVERYONE In my organization. And many have attachments I need to read. What I do is that unless it is TIME URGENT (which is RARE RARE RARE), I never read them at that moment; rather, I estimate the time I need and I have my assistant schedule it somewhere on my calendar (e.g. I may say, "I need 30 minutes within the next 2 weeks) and then I FORGET ABOUT IT until it shows up on my calendar and then, AND ONLY THEN, do I deal with it. But here's the key: That's what I do at that moment. The principle behind this is the management of commitments and that's what Joe is really talking about in this video! So with music, what Joe is suggesting is SPOT ON! Sorting out our commitments is central to managing our lives. This is essence of Stephen Covey's "Quadrant 2" living - more here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGWYapaNbahmn5I

I love your outlook and I understand the difference between making music for enjoyment and having to make it for your next Big Mac...or that Whopper that ain't near as big as the picture..aw you know...what I mean....a JOB!!! I know you've been there...I see it in your eyes...paid the dues and still love the music...that's for real. Being around "Music People" forces you to develop an instinct for sorting out whats real from the other 98% and by golly you are a rare bird....So I'm going to start accepting the idea that at some point the damn song is done and put it in the can........Thanks Joe

I remember when I worked at Sweetwater, they once played that radio jingle/song. I think I remember the song going something like "pushing the barriers of sound. Sweetwater Sound!"

It's really simple, prioritize! Nobody has time, you have to make time for the things that matter! Priority, if music matters to you, you will make the time to embrace it. Don't let your Life get so full of things that you have no time for the things that matter to you. Unclutter your Life.

It's OK Joe, we know musicians never grow up. And we like it that way!

goal-less sessions can be very useful if you don't have any inspiration for works in progress, because you can make lots of small loops and samples and patches that you can put aside and then later use when you need them. then when you're in a goal oriented session and you need a cool percussion loop, you can grab something from your pile
@famitory5 жыл бұрын
also if you end up with more stuff than you can ever use, sell it as a sample pack!

I agree with most of what you said, but sometimes, having a goal gives me unwanted pressure and I end up throwing everything away..

I thought your post was a bit hmmmm until (5.00). I have zero time to do what I want to do: make music. I promised myself I would finish 1 song this year, it's now September! As ever, you speak to me. Thanks. 3 months to finish my song!

Take away: 1 Open ended anything doesn't work. 2 People 'have'. 3 Fun could easily become burdensome 4 Shaking your head saying "shut up Joe" after he 'said' it, makes no sense. 5 Set a defined start and end time: for each step. 6 Progressing is motivational 7 Some habits need a habit-replacement 🇹🇹👍🏼💯
