My Wife’s SUV gets a Cam and Tune! BAD IDEA?

Well my wife's 08 Yukon had a DOD/AFM lifter fail 8 months ago and it is time to finally get it fixed and back on the road. It has an all aluminum 5.3 L33 with flat top pistons, 799 heads, and the bread box intake manifold so you know a guy like me can't just tear down an engine like that without doing some modifications. Let's see how this LS responds to a bigger aftermarket Comp Cam, a Diablo Sport I3 tuner, and an exhaust modification.

@@Hbzprojects I drive automatics with two feet for two reasons. First, it's nice to have a foot hovering over the brake pedal, quickens response times a lot. Second, I grew up driving manual trannys so it feels awkward if I don't use my left foot to drive an automatic.

If you don't get the squeaking stopped, it's the bearing in the water pump. Where you heated that water pump up, It burnt that water pump bearing

Pulling the inner fender skirt helps a ton to change those motor mounts. Just a heads up for next time saves you about 30 minutes. I also would have replaced them with oem mounts I've seen those power torque ones fail quite frequently.

Ive had the steam vents plugged on my supercharged 5.3 swapped c10 for about 5 yrs now with zero issues…..just make sure you jack up the front passenger tire when your filling the cooling system so that it is properly burped of all and any air pockets

With a handheld tune just tune the fan temperature to 180 and fans will kick on around the normal temperature. 187-190 degrees. I have a diablo sports tuner also on my 07 tahoe with a 4.8 same generation as your yukon. 87 performance tune with transmission firm shifts 1-2 and 2-3 you'll feel the firm shifts at WOT.

Josh I just wanted to tell you my good friend his wife had the same truck tosh got he was getting engine lights cylinder 5 was over heating it’s a bad design from gm he had it looked at by his inspection guy he said them trucks had a over heating problem on cylinder 5 so they put a spoon type thing they sale it bolts to the end cap on the connecting rod so every time that spoon picks up oil it throws it up in the cylinder like on a Briggs n Stratton motor it worked for a little but he traded the truck in because the new motor was going to be over 5 grand I don’t even think it had a 100,000 miles on it maybe that spoon add on part you may of seen them before I just wanted to tell you before I forget good to see you all I need to watch this episode tonight after work god bless you guys this made my day this video thank you :)

Unfortunately a lot of these newer engines have the multiple cylinder shutdown feature, it causes a lot more problems than anything. I personally hate working on ls engines myself, but I’ve had some bad experiences with them too.

i just bought a 2018 with a 5.3 and that lifter thing bothers me. it only has 50.000 miles they say change the oil at about 6000. so thats what i do and cross my fingers. good job on marges truck.

I personally prefer the older small block for many reasons, but the leaking always came from over torquing the Cork gaskets, when rubber gaskets started with torque stops, it stopped the old “oil leaks” in the common spots.

I reused my gasket and bolts in my Frankenstein single cam honda motor, i just torqued them 5lbs heavier than spec and its still running 5 years later. Edit: also copper sprayed the gasket

Antifreeze and belts= squeaky belt. I’ve used a bar of soap to rub on the belt. Just hold the bar of soap up against the belt sometimes both sides of the belt. Generally it will clear the noise up. In some cases I’ve used Indian Head shellack on belts. If that doesn’t stop the noise nothing else will other than a new belt.

I laughed at the 17 ft from back of motor to bumper. I have done a few shade tree mechanic stuff, and now that I weigh as much as small ship. I have had to lay a 2 x 12 across fenders to allow me to rest body over engine.

1:05:56 there’s a trick I learned on KZbin with the engine running use stick deodorant and apply it to the belt grooves it helped mine it worked you may have to apply several times over a period of time before it stops squealing permanently.

My wife destroys motor mounts by hitting R while still rolling forward. Its a violent jolt to the drivetrain, I ended up putting in solid motor mounts and a very stiff trans mount..so far so good

When the shop did motormounts on my 2010 5.3 they said book says it's 5 1/2 hrs per mount to change them.
