If they sense a woman is happier with an individual, they will push for that woman to stay with what makes them happiest. Truthfully, Emily was also probably living vicariously through her Mom if she spared no details when talking about Mike to Emily. She got to stay with John who was stable and reliable all while her Mom was living a romance movie, reigniting her love with her lover from high school (again, emotional creatures). Emily was so willing to let her dad suffer because she was enjoying the drama and risqueness of it all.
