In the time it took us to get this edited and posted, we are probably cutting it a little too close for Christmas for Toys for Tots for those of you interested in the E.T. Figure. Not to worry, 100% of the purchase price for those items will STILL go to Toys for Tots for later in the year or next Christmas! We are now listing 2 items instead of just the one featured in the video. If collectibles aren't your things, you can still donate ANY amount on the donate tab under the video. Merry Christmas! www.ebay.com/itm/275590500230 www.ebay.com/itm/275590512475

Love how you guys pronounce "Reesee's Piecees"! Having grown up in the '80s and '90s, I can say that yes, kids definitely went trick-r-treating and generally ran around the neighborhoods by themselves. One thing I never picked up on as a kid was the subtext about the dad having left the family for another woman. Their mom is at her wit's end, partly because she's a newly single parent and dealing with her husband leaving her. The kids are all dealing with it too, and Elliot being the sensitive one, his bond with E.T. helps him through this time. I read that Spielberg himself had an imaginary friend after his parents divorced, and that was his inspiration for the story. That personal significance is, I think, a big part of why the film is so touching.

Born in 1977 here. My brother in 1969. Yep, we did most things on our own. Trick or Treating included. No cell phones, we just came home when the street lights came on. If we were late we got in trouble and legitimate freak outs could happen if we weren’t where we said we would be. But, yes, we did most things without parental supervision in my lower middle class neighborhood.

Nominated for 9 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Visual Effects Best Sound Editing Best Film Editing Best Original Score. It was a huge success at the box office, making $790 million dollars against a $10 million dollar budget. It opened up 2 weeks before John Carpenter's THE THING was in theaters, and when critics saw that film, they said "It was one hell of an antidote for ET." THE THING was the exact opposite of ET, showing a not-so-friendly alien going on a rampage.

I have many fond memories of and associated with this movie. I was 11 years old when it was released, and I did not see it in an ordinary theater but a drive-in. It was so much more awesome seeing this for the first time under the stars; it made it more magical and special. That is one memory that will be with me to the day I die. The Christmas after this came out, one of my presents was a plush E.T. doll. That was my favorite present that Christmas and I had it for many years. A little bit of trivia: The biology teacher at the school was played by Harrison Ford. That's why you never see the teacher's face and Harrison Ford changed his voice a little, but, if you listen, you can tell it is him.

ET is a great movie to show the difference between a blockbuster from that era vs the modern blockbuster. ET drives drama through the characters and story that connect with the audience because it was so limited by technology. Today’s blockbusters lack that drama because they use special effects to drive the story. This is why ET holds up 40 years later where most modern blockbusters will essentially be forgotten.

I was born right before this film was released. My parents took me “to see it” as an infant in the back row. So it was my first ever movie. When in college, I took a short term class studying Christian Allegory in popular media. We discussed books, but also watched some great films, and E.T. was the highlight. The professor even did a trail of Reese’s Pieces to our film room that day and had a pile at each of our desks 🤣 I’m surprised you didn’t mention the allegory side, Holden. E.T. dies to save Elliot, is resurrected, and says “I’ll be right here” before he ascends to heaven. Merry Christmas 🎄

I saw this at an "Un-titled" screening. A small ad in the newspaper advertised an advanced special screening of a new upcoming Spielberg movie. No title was given, limited seating, blah, blah. I went, waited in line, and was about 3-4 to the last in line for an available ticket. The audience loved the movie, all stood up a gave a loud rousing long standing ovation. This was a few months before its general release. I saw it again later and could see that there were just a few edits, tightening up scenes. According to what I've read, M&M passed as being the candy "bait" - and Recess jumped at the chance, and the rest is history! Because of this product placement Recess skyrocketed in sales and became the candy Powerhouse that it is today.
@deathproofpony
@deathproofpony Жыл бұрын
That's true - MARS either didn't want their candy associated with aliens or thought the movie would bomb (despite Spielberg's previous successes) so they passed. Reeses Pieces were brand new and Reeses jumped at the opportunity which brought them huge sales for their new candy. IIRC, the novelization of the movie still uses M & M's, although I haven't read it since the movie originally came out.

It's actually in the scene where chancellor Valorum is remove from leadership of the galactic senate in phantom menace that you can spot the representatives of E.T.'s race.

Two scenes that scared me as a kid. When Elliot finds ET after leaving the Reese Pieces and ET screams. 😮😮😮 then when ET is almost dead in the riverbed. His body creeped me out. Also when they have Elliot in the plastic tubing hallway the FBI comes for whatever. Curious how Jen reacts

I love how all the kids on bikes have random hats, hoods or other accessories on their heads, so that they can hide the fact that they're using stunt doubles during the chase scene.

It’s funny they wanted to use M&Ms in the movie but Mars was afraid that the movie would scare kids and didn’t want to be a part of it. Reese’s sales skyrocketed after the movie came out. All the medical people working on ET are real medical people. Spielberg felt that actors couldn’t get the terms right so he told the medical staff to work on ET like they would a regular person. I remember growing up we used to walk about 3miles to go trick or treating and we’d be out until midnight. My dad went with us and carried a garbage bag that we’d dump our bags into when they got full so we could get more. When I first saw this I had such a problem with the medical part. I used to fast forward through it. Drew Barrymore thought ET was real so Spielberg instructed the puppeteers to keep the illusion going with her. Ben Burtt is an amazing sound person who worked on this movie. E.T.'s voice was provided by Pat Welsh, an elderly woman who lived in Marin County, California. Welsh smoked two packets of cigarettes a day, which gave her voice a quality that sound effects creator Ben Burtt liked. She spent nine-and-a-half hours recording her part, and was paid $380 by Burtt for her services. Burtt also recorded 16 other people and various animals to create E.T.'s "voice." These included Spielberg; Debra Winger; Burtt's sleeping wife, who had a cold; a burp from his USC film professor; as well as raccoons, sea otters, and horses. I had the ET video game for Atari and loved it. Wish I still had the game (along with the Atari system).

Great reaction! My favorite film of Spielberg! I think that this was at the height of Spielberg’s powers as a filmmaker and should be the most studied for any budding filmmaker. The blocking, framing, theme of shots etc! - The Halloween scene: my father took us trick or treating and other kids would join in because I’m the 80s you had a few kids going solo but it was still dangerous even then so I guess it depended on your neighborhood; also Holden mentioned the mother has no control. Spielberg himself mentioned that she was herself a big kid almost trying to find her way as a parent which is why she’s the only adult face you see until the government invasion. Also much of drew Barrymore’s interaction was not acting as she herself said she really believed oftentimes that ET was really alive.😊

I was soo young, 4 years old I guess, when I saw this movie and damn did it sit wrong with me. I already saw Star Wars, I was super into Sci-Fi, so E.T. seemed to be a good fit. But damn, his glowing parts scared me so much and the scenes where E.T. is all pale were terrifying for me! My (older) sister had an E.T. poster on her wall - just good old ET with his glowing finger and heart - and I started crying when I saw it, never went into her room again.
