Iona, I follow the leading KZbinrs who evaluate clubs and discuss pointers to improve scores (some you have played with). I admire that they share their experiences; however I don't comment on their sites. Iona I want to remind you that your presentations are excellent and your personality/attitude serves us a key reminder that attitude is a large part of the challenges golf presents. My wife and I are seniors and changing to lighter shafts and club heads with more loft has made the golf more enjoyable. Another pearl was your discussion with Phil Adams about using a golf swing with flow rather than one that explodes on the ball makes sense for those of us who are not young and/or world class athletes. Wish you the best health and happiness in the new year.

Another great video Iona. I think a point worth mentioning when comparing your carry distance on the T100 versus your older T200 is the impact of loft. Your 7 iron in the T100 at 34 degrees is approximately same loft as your T200 8 iron at 34.5 degrees

I fell in love with a certain driver shaft that was really popular 10+ years ago, no longer made. I have managed to find that shaft in a few old drivers so I have been able to purchase really inexpensively those clubs to recover the shaft of my dreams! If you can’t find the shafts of your dreams new old stock, and you’re hell bent on getting your old shafts, you could dry looking for a set of irons that have your dream shafts.

A few hopefully helpful comments: F3 and F4 stands for reg and stiff flex, irrespective of the shaft model. Both Recoils and Steelfibers use this nomenclature. Steelfiber: i80: if they feel heavy in F4, try in F3. Will swing much easier. Also, you can get steelfibers in “FC” model. To me they feel markedly softer than the original i80. Lydia Ko uses the FC model. Good luck.

Don’t know if this helps, but I had very similar issues - club fitter gave me KBS TGI (Tour Graphite) 70g in my irons and they have been the perfect combo for eliminating injury, while adding more stability. Best investment yet. Good luck, hope you find something that keeps you playing 🙏

IONA, you are a class act, for sure. Love following this video to the end. I do the exact process every two years to verify if my forged clubs need lie adjustments. I can attest to a heavier shaft causing injuries down the road. I play a KBS C-Taper 120 and often thought C-Taper lite might be the way to go, but your suggestion of a composite shaft might be the answer. Thankfully, I can assemble my own specs.

This video hits close to home. I'm on a similar journey to find an iron shaft that feels and performs right for me. Last year, I was fitted into clubs with Recoil Dart F4 75 stiff shafts. Even though the total weight and swing weight is similar to other clubs I've played, these have always felt heavy to me. After a year of playing with them I'm now dealing with tennis and golfer's elbows. The carbon shafts I've tried include Fujikura Tour 115i (decent), Steelfiber fc115 (dead) and KBS TGI 80 (light and whippy). I just picked up a set of irons with Mitubishi MMT 80. So far, they feel nice. Distance and control are good too. The weight is good, they feel lively but not whippy, and they seem to be kind to my elbows. It's still the honeymoon phase, but so far they are ticking off all the boxes. I've got my fingers crossed. Good luck on your quest.

At the end of January, I always spend a few days on the range. Slight difference, over three days, I hit 12 shots with every club. I take out the best and the worst each day, then average the 10. So at the end, I have 30 shots averaged on each club. Gives me a good set of numbers for each new season.

Iona...this is a great video! I have similar issues in my wrists, but mine is genetic. Basically an extra small bone in my wrists that, as I have gotten older, have caused some stiffness and discomfort from heavier clubs. I moved to a fully forged head that I absolutely love, and to a lighter graphite shaft. When picking a shaft, I tried around 15 different ones until I settled on a KBS TGI 70g. The Recoil shafts just did not have the same "snap" that I can feel in the KBS, and I would push shots out to the right with the Recoils. With the KBS, its a lovely little push draw. I used to swing my irons in the 83 to 85 mph range, and also found that slowing down my swing into the 78 to 82 mph (which took a bit of work), and moving to a regular flex (from stiff) improved my comfort and wrist problems significantly. The crazy part is slowing down with the new shafts greatly improved my carry, and my accuracy (I was flushing it on the center of the club way more often). My distances are just about 5 to 8 yards longer than what you are seeing on this video per club. When I went to the fitting, I also decided to really open up my options, and ended up finding that I never loved the length of a 4 and 5 iron, so I had those clubs made at 6 iron length, my 7 and 8 iron are 7 iron length, 8 and 9 are 8 iron length, and PW and 54 &58 degree wedges are all 9 iron length. Hybrids, 3 wood and Driver are all standard length. My iron game has never been better. I know you will find the right combination...when you do, the confidence just goes up! Keep up the wonderful work...

Thanks Iona a great insight with great narrative as usual. Really enjoyable watch and informative. Just shows that going to a proper club fitter instead of what I did, which was an American Golf fitting session makes so much difference. AG while ok felt more like a conveyor belt which my naivety shown, where it’s clear you get more of an experience with a proper fitting session, try more and probably hone in more tweaking out the marginal gains.

Hi Iona, great video report, thanks. One explanation for you getting less carry with the T100 irons compared to the T200 could be that each club is 2-3 degrees weaker in loft. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the T200 is a "hotter" club head anyway. I personally need more help than you, so I would need the extra forgiveness of the T200 (and then some 😁). I'm planning to get a set of Mizuno JPX 923 Forged irons soon, but I need to decide on the shaft. AeroTech should have one to suit me.

Really interesting video. Have you considered trying thicker grips? They might take some pressure off your wrist. I bought a set of Titleist 100s irons a year ago - love them! - and decided to experiment with thicker grips because I have a right elbow injury. They’ve made a huge difference and my elbow doesn’t bother me hardly at all now. Got the MCC +4 grips, with a couple of extra tapes, they’re thicker on the lower (right) hand compared to standard grips. Just another idea to maybe explore with your fitter! Good luck. 😊

Golf is such a tease, especially with equipment, I had a set of John Letters (sadly no longer with us) TX irons from the early 1990,s and once i made a slight adjustment to them they were just lovely the feel was the thing for me, i used them for many many years and only changed them when the heads were shot, i am still searching to find something that feels right but at nearly 66 is do l look at lighter steel or graphite ie senior in the shafts, so the search will continue 😊. Great vlog, hope you find what you're looking for, really do enjoy your enthusiasm for this great game 👍

I didn't get to play a whole lot this last season, and we're well into indoor golf season here in Canada. I'll be moving into the indoor facilities and going through this exercise again very soon. From last year's numbers, our iron yardages are quite similar and I don't start to hit longer until 6 iron. However, I don't hit my 5 or 4 iron well at all, which is why I carry 7W, 5W, 3W. My 7W is pretty much my favourite club in the bag because it's so versatile for me. I can use it from 165 to 190. It's very workable and launches high. I'm really looking forward to my winter sessions in the new year. Thanks for sharing your processes! I really enjoy these videos as you talk through everything.

A wee trip to the Sky Sports studio with your old mate Simon Holmes working on the pressure plates could do the trick. Technology these days is brilliant, but you can’t beat natural talent, you pretty much know what feels right for your own swing and how far you can push your wrist, I’m sure you will sort out what shafts are right for you.

One thing... the smash factor is the ball speed/swing speed, so naturally it is alot lower with more lofted club. 1.50 is ideal for driver. so dont worry you're doing fine in that regard

Well that was fun! I was surprised (pleasantly) that our club didtances were very similar! Arnold Palmer said find a swing you can repeat comfortably...then use that swing and find the distances! So when I was still young I chose to use a smooth 7i for 140 yards... while my friends were smashing 9i 150 yards! I was more balanced and consistent! And played better!😎 I'd like to point out the variables that you aren't getting in the simulator! Uneven ground... texture of the grass and grip of the shoes! Wind and temperature! So I'd say look for club feel first then the other stuff??

Very good info. I'm hitting similarly lofted irons, much heavier, with steel shafts. 8i down, our distances are pretty similar. Impressive! I'm flying my 7i about 160, with only about 3 yards rollout. It sticks to greens nicely. I recently had an analysis at Golftec. The only correction they wanted to coach me on is "compressing" my irons. They only teach the forms of the top PGA tour pros. At 63, I'm wanting to avoid potential for injury. Coming into the ball steeply sounds dangerous. It would be really cool to see how you've adjusted your swing through impact to avoid injury. I think other senior golfers would appreciate it, too!

Great video - I'm sure someone has pointed this out already below - shocked the first thing you stated with your 7i shaft is that it's a Steelfiber i80 stiff for your 150yd carry. I struggle with the i80 stiff flex and my carry 7i is 170yds. Steelfiber stiff (04) flex play closer to X. Merry Christmas all!

When I was only several years into Golf I decided to buy a set of Ping Eyes, they were so easy to hit, but most shots I would compare the feel to hitting with a hammer, and in no time switched to Blades although they didn’t flight the ball as far, I could tell by the feel how far the ball would carry, and it vastly improved my game. I had a long lay off Golf and came back and decided to go for Semi Blades but eventually had to now revert to a strong and very forgiving set of Clubs which are the T400’s, I’m close to 70 so need all the help I can get, so instead of relying on feel, I have to work a lot harder on my short game as I know I may not get my shots as close as I used to. I still have several sets of Bladed and Semi Bladed which I occasionally practice in my Garage Simulator I doubt it but at some point I might mix my shorter clubs up with Semi and Bladed Clubs if I can reach a decent standard again, going to take a lot of work.

My professional shaft recommendations as alternatives to your original UST Recoil 80 shafts: 1. KBS TGI 70 R+ (can tip for one hard-step toward stiff flex and is 70g raw right on the nose, just a little bit heavier than these Dart 65g; 2. Project X Catalyst 60S; 3. Kinetixx TS-Iron R-flex (plays stiff anyway); 4. Fujikura Pro Graphite 75-S

Potentially the Axiom 75g save for price. But does offer options in terms of build and tipping to get the right bend profile. Looking at switching to graphite from Modus 105’s as having some issues with joints these days especially now it’s UK winter with indoor and/or range mats.

Great video Iona. I would've expected a difference in club fittings if you'd have gone to a well known golf retailer but not from a Pro from a golf club. There is a lot about the shafts that is being ignored. A guy on KZbin (can't remember his name, think he was German) explains how the shafts are just cut from a longer length and the stickers are just put on any old way so the kick point could be anywhere on the shaft but because the sticker has been put on, then they line up the head with that. That's why you hear people saying they hit their 6 iron like a dream and better than the rest of their clubs and its probably because it just so happens it's the only one that lines up correctly. Trouble is, trying to find somebody who will test the weight of the shafts and the kick points and is willing to spend the time because they'll just say you're not a Pro, you won't notice the difference. Sorry for the rant

But after few months of using them old wrist injury started to come back out of nowhere and more i used the irons worse it kept getting after each round. I was in lighter shafts in the mizunos but fitter recommended the x100 due the the tip stiffness and torque. I am like to tinker with clubs so went and got cobra forged tours with kbs $ taper 120 shafts and trying them for few months and so far wrist pain is not annoying me at all. I took my gamer ball to a custom fitting last week.

I noticed the indoor beanie too. Seemed superfluous.

I got hold of a Garmin R10 for this very reason. Squinting down the range is now way to find your distance.

Interesting stats on the 1/4 inch shorter shafts. I’m 5’6 and have 1/2 inch shorter shafts. Not sure if I should opt for full length shafts next time.

Tremendous consistency. When I do this you have at least a couple of shots over the hedge onto some poor persons conservatory table. Virtually. The difference between a duffer and a good golfer.

Don’t really understand, but is it possible to get the new heads fitted to your old shafts? Or do shafts wear out after a while?/

Should try the jumbo max grips, Ive got arthritis in both wrists and have been really good, keeping the pressure off, takes a bot of getting used to though

I play the F3 with Callaway Apex 21 heads. Shafts are great for my 50 year old creaking body and I think are a better compromise than the F4s. Keep going 👍 great content

With your wrist injury, have you considered single length irons? It would make it easier for you to control and standardize the bottom of your swing arc...and thus could help you lessen the force of impact on your wrist when the club is making contact with the turf. I know you are interested in maintaining club head speed with longer shafts, but if you can swing with less pain and reduce worsening your injury, perhaps it would be worth at least trying it. Regardless, happy holidays and thanks for your open-hearted golf content.

Such a useful “end of term” exercise to see if your yardages have changed over the course of a season! Imho most amateurs have only a very rough idea of how far each of their clubs go and that’s a serious but easily fixable problem! Here’s an idea for you Iona….how about inviting all your subscribers to donate a fiver and three lucky people (me included obvs) get chosen at random to play a round of golf with you (Chasing the red natch) and all the money goes to the charity of your choice! Whaddya think?

Have you tried Fujikura Pro iron shafts they do 65 75 85 and 95. I played the 95 tour great feel. Worth a look. On another topic something that has helped me with wrist and finger pain in golf was switching to Jumbomax grips. Yes they would take a little getting used to because of the size but they are great. (Ask Peter Finch ). I would go Zen Lite there better in the wet, size wise they say opt for the same size as you would be in men’s gloves.

I have gone through fittings before and they always try to put me into heavy stiff clubs, I usually suggest a lighter softer shaft and they refuse to even let me hit!

Highly recommend a visit to Precision Golf for a detailed fitting Iona. As good as it gets for a truly agnostic approach to fitting and Simon Cooper there is a genius. Great KZbin channel too if you want to check them out 👌(PS… they’re Near Weybridge in Surrey so not too far for you)

@@3nCounting the issue is with shafts and weighting not the heads. No offence to the Titleist fitting centre but it won’t be as in depth as at a top level specialist. But thanks for the reply…… “dude”

All my clubs come from Simon and the guys at Precision Golf however I suspect there is an obligation for her to play Titleist so it becomes a shaft only issue where Precision are brand agnostic. They would be very happy I’m sure to work around that though.

Could you pull the old shafts out of the T200s and reuse? Would be really interesting to see the comparison with the t100 head.

Have you tried Axiom shafts… I am currently demoing the 105g, but I’m getting the 75g put in an iron also to test. Currently I play Recoil F4 so around 95g shaft. I love the recoils, but I am finding the axiom to be more stable and actually get more height

Fantastic video as always. For me hitting off false turf kills my wrists and forearms (Your a million times better than me and pick the balls off the ground beautifully so may not been an issue) Have you thought of trying a more cavity backed iron? I know there is some snobbery around this but surely a more forgiving head with a cavity back would absorb the strike better and not transfer it to the hands/wrists as much as a blade? Just an idea, I'm a newb and no expert. Just thinking of things to help your wrists.

G’Day Iona, swing is looking really solid, for what it’s worth..I’d like to see you hold your finish longer ( without the recoil ) and really post up on your right toe. All Good keep the videos coming.

I know I've said this before but I'll say it again. You need to slap on some jumbomax ultralite grips asap. Should hopefully help your wrist problems like its helped many others including Peter Finch
