Hey Hamish, love your channel. Just started learning value investing. I've been testing with a couple hundred $ at a time easing in knowing that I'm not really confident in what I'm doing. Your comment on investing in too many companies and not understanding them is similar to what I've been doing. Reminds me I should be performing more due diligence and starting to get a feel for these companies.

i also fell into the "too big to fail" trap of NAB bought at $25.65, at the time of writing its trading at $17.15, much like you it was the first stock I purchased and its the majority holding in my portfolio, ive been using your stock analysis spreadsheet to workout what my next purchase will be, I've probably picked apart 100 stocks at this point and have my options narrowed down to about 5, hopefully in the coming weeks I can find the time to cull that list to 1. Thanks for the video always appreciated :)

Thanks for your honesty. I made similar mistakes and invested in individual companies I knew nothing about when starting out. I think the best thing is to do is invest in a market ETF when starting out and then invest in individual companies when you have learned more and are willing to put in the effort. I am starting to move towards your current situation of researching more companies and investing in only the few best.

I only recently discovered your videos and I really like them. I wish I had your insight when I was your age! Your reflection on your mistakes is so valuable for me! It made me understand my own decisions and my own thought process much more. It also helps me to understand that passive investing probably is better for me as picking the right stocks is a lot of work as you said. I also like the clean style of your videos: no annoying noise, straight to the point and just enough visuals. They are also not too long! And your Australian accent is very pleasent!

Hi Hamish, my worse investment is GrafTech. My only mistake is that I saw some red flags but didn't took them seriously because Monish Fabrai was in it, I'm down 50% because of the management team - they are a big company that suck GrafTech's cash flow via Notes and special dividends.

Great video, Hamish! How many hours do you usually spend for each company you look at? In other words, how deeply should I understand a business in order to invest in it? I'd appreciate if you could shed some light on that topic. Thanks!

Started learning investing in April last year and bought my first company APX in June of the same year. I maybe did a few hours of research and bought it at $29 and didn't even really look at it until March this year, it went down to $16, then came back up to 29 where I sold it for what I paid. Now it's around 36. I just got out because I NOW know I didn't understand the business what so ever. A lesson I learnt without, thankfully, not losing any money.

One of my worst investments was $DNR. I bought the stock in the spring thinking the price of oil would spike up in the summer. I also didn’t fully understand the competitive advantages of the business and I didn’t do enough research. I also was trying to diversify my holdings away from tech. The main lesson I learned is to never diversify just to diversify.

Qudian. I read their financial reports before buying it, but I didn't understand the way they are reporting their earnings from loans and the cyclicality associated with it. In order to meet the IFRS they are obligated to book their full earnings from a loan the moment they lend the money out which inflates their reported earning when they leverage up and give out more loans. The problem is that these inflated earning do not properly reflect the current and future delinquency rates since new loans can't be delinquent until some time in the future. These freshly booked 0% delinquency rate loans lead to very high reported earnings in the short term and also distort the overall delinquency rate of all loans on the balance sheet because they reduce the overall portion of older delinquent loans on the balance sheet. Once the economy takes a hit and the company needs to deleverage and reduce the amount of newly loans given out due to too high delinquency rate the masquerade ends and their overall delinquency rate go through the roof. This results in negative earnings due to high provisions. You think that commodities are very cyclical? Microlending is probably worse. I also underestimated the indebtedness of their customers which became a big problem once the P2P lenders were shut down. I bought the stock primarily because I saw the value in their open platform and the amount of credit data they got from their large customer base. At this point I'm unsure if these two asset are as valuable as I thought they were. I'm still holding because I noticed the above problems too late and at the current price it does not make sense for me to sell and I'm waiting for the next credit cycle. At least I learned how lenders operate and I will never buy one again.

My worse investment is in two parts. I lost 100% of my A$100K investment in my cousin’s privately held single purpose property development company aimed at turning an old gas station site into multiple townhouses near the new shopping centre in Dapto NSW. The private company was deregistered by ASIC after it ran out of money waiting for the corrupt town planners to approve the development. I then compounded my error by selling 1,000 shares of CSL at a market price of A$135 to cover the capital loss. This meant I missed out on the A$148,160 rise in value. Taking my total loss to over a quarter million Australian dollars!. I learnt two lessons from this financial debacle. Lesson one is Never invest outside your circle of competency. Relying on others to overcome your knowledge deficit is no protection against ignoring this rule. A case of the “Blind leading the Blind”. The second lesson is when deciding what to sell to offset a capital loss is to cull the worst performing stocks, not your best!

I have been analysing businesses now for a year and a half and have covered the NZX and most of the ASX. I have found 10’s of investable companies but only 2 Investments so far which I managed to pick up at margin of safety prices. What do you think about portfolio diversity? Is it necessary to diversify in order to lower your risk mathematically by being invested in around 10 or so companies (as Ray Dalio mentions)? Or is being invested in 2 companies which you are confident in fine for mitigating risk in your opinion? Thanks

For some reason this video reminds me a lot your video where you went telling us about gains and losses in your portfolio, and you basically said the same things on this video about those 2 companies. A little bit not happy with your content for this week. I suppose you had nothing else to speak about. And also most of the financial videos do copy each other, I always had the impression you were different, but that didn't last long.
