Chasing high dividend yield was one of my early investment mistakes. Often times, the high dividend yield was telegraphing issues with the company and was being paid for by more and more debt. I ended up with a few cases where the dividend was subsequently cut followed by significant share price collapse.

I failed to apply the portfolio diversification technique in investing I learned it the hard way. No matter how much you are making from a particular investment at the moment still don't forget the diversification technique so that when another is down, the other will be up. You can do so by getting an experienced specialist whose platform has diverse investment choices to choose from. By doing this, you give little room for regrets and perhaps gain more.

The only things I would add are: read and 'paper trade'. Read Ben Graham, Phil Town, Fisher, Taleb, Damodaran, Carlin. The list goes on. This has two advantages; 1. You will pick up something from each book, and over time you will form your own opinions and may even disagree with some of the authors on some points. 2. Reading takes time, and you won't be buggerising about on the stock market, making half-arsed decisions - at least you'll be able to identify your mistakes by the time you start investing! Which brings me to paper trading: Start a book of companies you're interested in and 'invest' some imaginary money, then check to see how they fare over time. You'll soon see how much the price varies in the short term, and it won't cost you a cent (I think this might be from Phil Town).

I’m never having children, but if I did, I would definitely introduce them to the stock market through paper trading at a very young age and let them follow the market for 5-10 years. They would learn such a vast amount of valuable information all before the age of 18.

One thing that changes EVERYTHING and the one I would give to my younger self - "am I buying a business or am I buying a stock" . Once we change mindset that we own a busienss, with real living people, workign there, thinking about a business, how it can improve, what weakness there is or risk, and what strenght - it changes everything, simply everything. There is no more important thing than this and from this all questions arise and center. Think BUSINESS not stock, not chart, not price, not 10 % down or 10 % up.

Hi Hamish, Great video as always. Only one question when should you take profits in a stock you like, and then look for another entry point, accepting the fact that a better entry point may not come.

Even with a recession going on right now, unless you got cash into the market in March or April you were already facing an overvalued market again which has been getting progressively more overvalued, built on hope and that many company's achieving lowered expectations(Apart from big tech). Volatile months ahead however could be a good opportunity if you do have stocks near you buy price.

ITC is one such example where I can say the stock prices are irrational. It's one of the cash-rich business & increasing profitability without any debt over the past few years. But still, it has only given merely 2% over the past five years.

Hi Hamish, thanks for the great content, I constantly find value and different angles on things in your videos. A question for you, what do you think about great businesses (have all 4 Ms), where the share price is directly affected by the price of a material (gold, copper, oil, gas etc)? So they are growing cash flows and equity, but still very much correlated to the price of the material. Cheers mate

Hi Hamish, this is a great video for beginners and I wish I knew this (like we all I suppose) 5 years ago when I started my investing journey. It is a great reminder for not so new investors and/or experienced ones as well. I found the idea of investing in an index fund consistently as a foundation for your investments very useful. This framework can take the pressure off yourself of having to find individual stocks right away and therefore letting you take the time to learn on how to analyze businesses. Cheers! 😉

Hamish, i know that you invest in US stocks. How do you deal with the currencies when buying/selling? Ive currently lost around 4% on my american investments this year because i bought dollars with kroner (norwegian currency) at a bad time. In total ive earned a lot of money on the investments, but this loss annoys me.

1. I'm all for picking individual stocks. I don't care how much time I have to invest to learn as much as I can. Then again, I'm starting as a pro. But nothing beats good individual stockpicking, tho. 2. Stocks prices really ARE irrational, at least short term, simply because most people ARE irrational. Don't believe that “always perfect pricing” theory at all. 3. Penny stocks can be as good as anything else, or even better, if you know more or less when to buy them and how to know they're not very risky, for example, buying well below book value (or even better, tangible book value), not much debt, being profitable... There are quite a few like that right now. I mean, some are even less risky than most big tech (which I also own some of)! 4. Ah, yes, too many “traders”, especially these Robinhood days...
