Great tips that are almost never mentioned! Here's something else that I catch myself doing: leaning the guitar back just a little too much. It's basically to see the neck. But if I keep the neck surface perpendicular to the ground, my wrist feels better.
@FlamencoExplained
@FlamencoExplained 4 жыл бұрын
Good point about the need to watch the left hand - if you're tilting the guitar back your wrist just has to reach that much more! Might have to do a video about learning one's way around the guitar without feeling the need to peek. Cheers, Kai

I have tried to play using flamenco posture, but personally I found that using classical posture is more ergonomically comfortable and relieved my wrist pain. I keep working on flamenco posture.

Another way to handle fingering and forming chords with fretting hand is like this: Bend your elbow in order to raise your hand and wrist, while keeping wrist straight. Elbow is somewhat but not quite below the wrist. Left-hand fingering the chord should be easy and more comfortable.

Thank you for this video! I've been experiencing numbness in the fingers of my left hand while playing, and I'm pretty certain it's from bad posture. I think the main root of my problem is my wrist, so this should help a lot. I also have a tendency to tense and lift my left shoulder, which is likely contributing to the numbness, too. I'll load up this video when I need a reminder to relax. Thanks again!!
@FlamencoExplained

Hey Milo - Bad posture can definitely mess you up, but if you're feeling numbness you're probably also using way more tension than you need to. I'm really glad this video helped you, and you're right to look at your whole body and not just the arm/wrist. Cheers, Kai

Thank you Kai this is amazing! makes a lot of sense! my index however does not seem to be long enough to bend around the neck as shown. I have quite small hands, should this same principle apply to those like me? (I would also really benefit from a video on right hand wrist pain.) Gracias Maestro.
@FlamencoExplained
@FlamencoExplained 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm - I've seen some great players with tiny hands, which makes me believe there's always a way. Unless your index is shorter than the width of the neck, you should be able to apply these concepts. Just be super patient and start slow

I really appreciate your efforts ... I wish to see a video about right-hand wrist pain ... I am really suffering from right-hand wrist pain every time I play. yet I don't know the cause.
@FlamencoExplained
@FlamencoExplained 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Hamad - that's a bit less straightforward, but the basic idea applies. Look at how you're using your right hand in terms of the mechanics of the arm (i.e. how the arm wants to move ideally and what you're asking it to do when you play). If you have pain it's more than likely that you're either bending your wrist more than you think or you have tension in your right hand/arm/shoulder/neck that is turning into hand/wrist pain. Cheers, Kai

One could try to stretch the fretting fingers too far when attempting to figure how to play a piece of music from written musical notation. I did that about 30 years ago, and it gave pain in hand and part of forearm which took about 4 months to heal.

Great stuff. Can you describe the disadvantages of having a more classical posture with the left foot raised, for the flamenco guitarist that is. Because clearly it is a posture that is better for wrist ergonomics.. That would be great! Thanks!!!!
@FlamencoExplained
@FlamencoExplained Жыл бұрын
Hey - honestly I’ve spent so little time exploring classical posture that I’m not really qualified to describe much about it. But I’ve seen enough badass classical players play insanely virtuosic music to speculate that nothing about that posture is going to hold you back technically.

Classical guitarists keep the tuning pegs level with their head. Then barring does not require bending fingers too much.

Thats great tutorial for the left hand but I will be honest my right hand makes all the trouble when I do fast Picado,tremolo,Rasgiadous but not on slow tempo only when I jump to high tempo,it might be because I dont stretch much?bending my wrist too much to get the hand positioned right?thanks alot for your help
@FlamencoExplained
@FlamencoExplained 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah - basically the trick is to make sure that you don't tense up when you start to play faster. Way easier said than done, but that's almost always the problem with playing faster, as the tension destroys all of the good habits you develop when playing slow. Cheers, Kai

Hey - I didn’t know about the C or D shape terminology, but one of the most important things when choosing a guitar is whether or not if feels comfortable, so really try to play a guitar before buying it if at all possible.

What about the thumb? Parallel to the fret? That's what I've been reading, but it puts my wrist in an awkward position. Thanks!
@FlamencoExplained
@FlamencoExplained 3 жыл бұрын
The thumb is there for balance, so don't force it to do anything it doesn't want to. Certainly doesn't need to be parallel to the frets. Look at your hand away from the guitar to get a sense of what's natural for you.

@FlamencoExplained
@FlamencoExplained Жыл бұрын
Hey - It can definitely take some time, especially if you've been bending your wrist for a long time already. I'd say try to be patient with yourself and don't expect it to change overnight, and then try to be as mindful as possible of how you're using your wrist whenever you pick up the guitar. Maybe even write yourself a note in the space where you practice to check in every now and then. Cheers, Kai

From this exercise, I went from realizing that my wrist is weak, to realizing my *whole arm* is weak. Doing the arm thing for the barre chords makes my arm hurt, and the strings *still* don't ring. Guess I'll have to sort this out.

Not quite sure about the music you're mentioning, but the concept is really the same no matter what chords you're playing - get used to straightening the wrist and playing with less tension if you're experiencing pain. And if it's a lot of pain definitely take a break until it stops hurting if you can!
