Talk about Spooktacular Challenge: Staying in a cabin in the woods while writing a spooky novel set in a cabin? I held my breath that first day you set out your work on the table and thought, "Why is she sitting with her back to the door?" Then I thought, "at least she'll see the person on camera." Parking your car in front so you could press the alarm was brilliant! The cabin is BEAUTIFUL though :) So glad we made it through! Thanks so much for the pep talk about not giving up and to keep writing, Sarra. Seeing your success has been so inspiring and it's something I've held onto for a long time. I will make it and be published one day and your videos, resources, and encouragement will be reason why. Can't wait for part 2!

I actually live in a cabin in the woods. Number one, I have drapes and blinds! Number two, I put solar lights way out into the trees so it doesn’t just seem like a mass of darkness. Aside from that, it’s the best place to concentrate and write!
@SarraCannonАй бұрын
@@christinecortese9973 yes!! I also grew up in a log cabin in the middle of the woods! I was never scared at home, but I think just being alone in a place I'd never been to was contributing

The minute she went into this gorgeous house and I noted the absence of blinds/curtains, I knew what would happen. I am very funny about not having my blinds open at night. I also have a severe anxiety disorder, so I definitely understand. I would have to at least have a white noise machine or something at night lol, but other than that I like it quiet. I have ADHD and Autism as well, so I struggle with sensory issues, particularly with noise.

I do get aways to a beautiful rented cabin in the woods similar to yours. It's also 3-4 hours away. Deer even come up into the yard to feed. But it's aways the same cabin. I mention this because like you, the first night is a little rough, the ice crashes into it's empty tray and the sound echos through the lofted ceilings. And if there's kids in the other side of the duplex, I sleep in the other bedroom, except the refrigerator is on the other side of the wall as the headboard and the first couple of times I awake when the motor kicks on. If it bothers me too much, I sleep in the loft. Luckily, in almost 40 visits of going there, I've never had to sleep on the sofa bed. My point is: by staying at the same place, I settle in much easier and faster. I know where everything is located. It's the same dishes, the same white towels. I know which of my comfort items to bring... Like my cast iron fry pan with lid. Yes, they have a non-stick aluminum fry pan, but I know my cast iron. I bring an extension cord so I can plug in when working from bed. I take an ice chest so I take condiments and other refrigerator items that are soooo expensive in those little jars and I can bring home leftovers. So I pack somethings in mason jars to take, so I have containers to bring left overs home. They have salt and pepper, but I'm used to the flow of mine. Of course, I couldn't bring all of this if I would fly to my destination, but why not use the space in your car anyway. Soooo👍 to bringing your bed pillow! I brought mine a few years, but there's sooo many pillows on the king bed that I just don't need it. Another thing I do after unloading the car, is to try to take a nap. Even if I don't fall asleep, this lay down helps me to transition from my home life and the road trip to my new situation. I think it also allows my body to relax and adjust to the 6000 feet increase in elevation. It helps my mind to fill it's decision making tank. I guess going to the same place over and over, eliminates a lot of decisions too. I know which chair I sit in for dinner, where I like to sit for breakfast coffee. Which bathroom I use. Decisions I can use in my project instead. I also plan my meals before I leave home. It's like you said in planning for Prep-tober... plan your meal and your clothes so those decisions are already made and you can use you decisions for creativity instead of self care. 💕🌞🌵😷

What a wonderful vlog of your retreat, thankyou so much for taking time to film and share it! I quoted you in my Commonplace notebook "Just because it's hard doesn't mean it can't be joyful ... I have to take a moment in the midst of the hard, to also express great gratitude that I get to live this life that I once only dreamed of." Absolutely! Q3 was hard for me with very debilitating illness and pain, and extreme stress and anxiety, but there were still so many moments of connection, triumph, revelation, peace, comfort, achievement, hope and personal growth. I always love to count the little wins and blessings, which make everything else easier to endure. I can get scared anywhere, and would not have coped with uncovered windows ... I'd be taping up sheets to make sure nobody can see in, and reading a cosy MG school story to comfort myself. Driving on outback roads in the dark is another brand of scary!! Well done achieving so many words written and plot breakthroughs.

You know, Sarra, despite all you show us about how hard things can be for a writer, even one as accomplished as you, I think we all still draw inspiration from you. Despite how hard this retreat was for you, it gave me the inspiration I needed to kick my butt into gear to get back to edits on my book when I was feeling overwhelmed by it. There feels like there's still so much to do, even with how far I've already come, but it feels like a mountain of work still. I just need to tackle it one chapter, one page, one paragraph at a time. And I know I'll feel much better when the work is just done. You're an inspiration to us all! And I bet it was super spooky being out there by yourself.

Fun story: b/f and I would go to families property where it was so dark, a full moon would light up the road as if it were the sun itself. We had one sorta nearby neighbor, and the rest were a good few miles away at best. He joked about zombies and how spooky it was when we were outside taking photos of the sky, until we heard what sounded like kids laughing. I thought 'maybe this is just a far echo from one of those other homes far out'. Logic said real fast that wasn't possible, and it got louder. It was coyotes. There was a pack of coyotes near us and we RAN back into that house let me tell you. 😂
