the phrase they used to describe Doug Walters was " the electrifying Doug Walters " . indeed this Mate from Australia was one of their greatest heroes who refused to be a star . he talked with his bat and often came late in the middle order . love ya Doug

Doug Walters tormented Indian spinners in India. His wicket was the most difficult to get when he toured India. Gibbs is one of the greatest bowlers and to hit him like that is incredible.

My all-time hero, Doug Walters - total mystery that he never played against the West Indies after that series. Toured England four times and failed on each tour - despite all that, had a career average of 48, on par with a Neil Harvey.

"Probably only Bradman scored more hundreds in a session than Doug Walters" ... in Bradman's day teams bowled 120 balls an hour, whether 20 6 ball overs in England or 15 8 all overs in Australia. In Walters's era it was 90 ball an hour, and this is still the ideal today. However, slow over rates did not really begin until after world series cricket, and now it has gotten ridiculous that a new over can't start until the multiple tv adds have finished. If 90 balls an hour by the fielding side had been the norm in the 21st century, Adam Gilchrist and Virenda Sehwag would have scored centuries in session more often than either Bradman or Walters and the likes of Lara, Tendulkar and Ponting would have done it on a number of occasions as well.

@@ianghose1 Yes, for sure, Pietersen's average strike rate when scoring a century was 71, which was the necessary scoring speed required to score a ton in a session up until WW2. By Doug Walters' era, the 1970s pre WSC it was 85, but nowadays would require better than a run a ball.

True, but mind you he was a surprise recall for the 80-81 series against India. Did not do badly but prior record and his age may have worked against him, not to mention many youngsters crowding the middle order.

@@VSV659 I think he averaged 24,in 1977..7 in 1972.. he was always happier on true wickets like here in Australia, although in1973 he caned the west indies attack.fobt even go there on the tour of South at in 1970.. bad management,itentary,poor umpiring,a woreout Australia side after four tests in India...I'd like to have seen More of Martin Kent however back injury caused a hasty retirement.

@@roybennett9284 Honestly, despite everything we hear about Walters’ feats at Perth and Port of Spain, I think his extraordinary years were in first class cricket in the Sheffield Shield and early Test cricket between 1963 and 1969 - and during that time, he was also out of cricket for 2 years - one of the few players to go into Selective Service.

@@VSV659 yes and he went in willingly,no complaints to the media or protests.one could only imagine his runs and average if he has played.i can clearly remember the match when waters and Higgs came together for a last wicket partnership...then big Lance Cain's sent down a short one Higgs used the bat to protect himself and was caught... however no ball as it was suggested intimacy bowling.what a drama with Geoff Howarth seeking clarification from both umpires...not a good summer for the kiwis.
