Hello friends! Welcome to the first van build vlog.
I picked up my van on Tuesday this past week and couldn't wait to get out there and get to work.
The first step was pulling out that bulkhead wall behind the seats and removing the D-ring bolts on the floor and walls. I was sure glad I had my impact driver for that. I did have to drill out a couple of screws on the wall but eventually that yielded to my efforts and came down.
Next was rolling up the rubber floor mat and then lots of cleaning and degreasing to get ready for paint.
I primed the floor where the paint was worn off to bare metal and any small spots of rust I could see. Luckily there were only a few areas where there were pin point size spots.
Then rolled on a coat of Tremclad rust inhibiting metal paint on the walls and ceiling and then the floor. In hindsight, maybe the floor would have been ok with just the primer but, as I already had the paint I wanted to give it an extra layer of protection.
Like so many parts of Canada and the US, t's going to be stupidly hot here next week so I probably won't be able to do a lot on the van. Unless my sound deadening arrives! I think I'll brave the heat to put that up if I can 🤓🤷🏻‍♀️.
I hope you enjoy the vlog ❤️.

Adelina, you are my hero, your videos are helping me in more ways than you will ever know, they have been inspiration! I live near Edmonton (Sherwood Park) in the home I shared with my late husband. My only daughter and her adult kids currently live in Calgary. I am working my way through minimizing, with help from your videos, to list my house and sell, so I can relocate nearer to family.I have been researching tiny home builders and options of places to park one, closer to my family in Calgary. In the process, I attended the virtual tiny home conference this spring and saw a presentation by Kenton, so have registered for his workshop to be held at SAIT July 30-August1st. He is also doing the workshop in Edmonton, but I will be at a seminar on Salt Spring Island, in BC when that is scheduled, so, Calgary it is for me! I saw your excellent testimonial for his workshop. I am also interested in building out a van conversion, like you are, to allow me greater freedom to travel, and explore places to eventually land my tiny home. I have long volunteered for various music festivals in Alberta and volunteered at my daughters triathlon events, and I like to ski, do seminars on the Island, so a van will help support that. I was wondering if you would be willing to do an interview with me sometime about your experience selecting your builder. Your tiny house design has so many unique, well planned features, and ideas! Would you text or call me at 780-996-5568 if you would be willing for a interview.

Good evening! I am living vicariously through you! I live in a tiny house in Florida and am loving it. I have a 21ft RV but as I’ve gotten older (75) I’ve been wanting to downsize from that too. My son has a van that he said he would sell to me but that probably won’t happen for a couple of years. Meanwhile, I will enjoy watching you fulfill yet another one of your dreams. The most fun out of all of this is challenging yourself to downsize. I did it when moving into my tiny (180sqft) and now I’ve started to get rid of a lot of camping equipment. I can dream! Looking forward to your next video. Take care of yourself in that heat. Be blessed. Susan Harter

Wow, the Pro Master is really square! I didn't think that it was that square. You may be right, it might be the better choice compared to the Transit for space. Nice job! Good choice! They are probably just out of the white because I know I have bought it in the past for a couple of my garden wrought iron plant holders. It seems everyone is doing renos and other home projects with Covid and all. Are you going to use a bedliner to coat the white metal walls? I hear it helps with preventing condensation. VanCity VanLife interviewed a couple (I think they were from Ontario not sure), that used it and they don't have insulation in their van and they said that they don't get cold. I guess it acts like a minimal amount of insulation and by keeping moisture at bay it helps keep them warm, maybe? Keep up the great job! I am excited to watch your process and to see the end product. All my best.

I am excited for you. Just a thought of a van I saw a couple years ago built by a 17 year old girl and her Dad. It was also a budget no build project. They took her captain's bed and mattress (always available on craigs list and market place) from her room, put it across the back with a couple off the shelf narrow kitchen cabinets under it. Between the 2 end cabinets they put a couple cabinet doors, and that is where her potable toilet lived. The area underneath at the back gave her some storage accessible from the back. (I think this would be a great place for batteries and electrical.) The drawers under the bed were a good spot for all her belongings, and the two end cabinets were used for cooking pots and pans, and on the other side was food. In a gypsy wagon I built, I put in a top lift fridge/freezer on heavy duty drawer slides to pull out. It is straight dc, and uses very little battery power. I would recommend having a DC to DC charging unit, and make sure your alternator is strong enough. (I destroyed my alternator and wiring because I didn't know) If it is diesel, it probably will have a high output already. This way, if you are doing a lot of travelling at the start, it will be more than enough to to keep your batteries full without solar at the start. I went with AGM 105 amp hour (they don't need venting) at the start but do an energy audit on what you may want, and will need. (I had 3 because I was running a dialysis machine - got them in Vancouver much cheaper.) ( I went with a 370 amp alternator made by Meckman, but there are others out there cheaper). I would recommend this from the start, as it can be used in your build later on. When I did all this, portable power was in it's infancy, but now there are a lot more choices. Just one other thing. I started using Baltic Birch plywood for building. It is light, and you don't have to use any 2x framing. The cabinetry is all done with a Kregg jigg pocket screws. You can fill the screw holes with plugs made for it. (they are fairly expensive to buy at a local building store, but you can buy them in bulk far cheaper. I reverse engineered the pocket jig, and made my own plug maker for pennies on the dollar) Way lighter and cheaper as you don't need to spend the cost in dimension wood. I look forward to following your build.

@garypollock1949
@garypollock1949 3 жыл бұрын
@@joansmith2974 I took a 2 x 3 x about 6 inches long. I then drilled a hole in the center all the way through with the kregg jig, and drilled another hole straight in with a 2/8 inch drill, about 2.5 inches deep, at about 1/3 of the width of the block. I then ran it through the band saw, cutting off the top part, exposing most of the 2 holes. You can then insert the dowel into the angle cut , and cut off the long end. Put the plug into the straight hole, and cut it off flush with the block. It will then fit perfectly into the plug hole, with a little left out to sand flush. If someone knows how to post a picture here, I can do that.

Hi from Sylvan Lake! I love your channel and your tiny home. You're rocking the Van project. I'm excited to watch your progress. In this video, you mentioned that you like your screen curtain on the house door. Where did you get it? Maybe I could find one in Red Deer. Some are made so cheaply but yours looked like a good one. Who knows, us Alberta gals just might meet up someday. 🇨🇦❤

I've been watching a lot of other videos of people doing the van life. I am excited to see what you do with yours. I know it's not full time living. Are you doing most of the renovation yourself or hiring someone? When do you expect to be done with your build? Can I ask what year is the van and how much did you purchase for?
@myBIGtinyhouselife

I’m doing a quick fit out for the summer and then come fall I will start the full build. I want to do a lot myself with help but there are some things I don’t have the knowledge or tools to do. I don’t have a garage to work out of. It’s a 2017.

just over 200 KMS. Not sure what that is in miles, sorry.

what should I expect to pay for a similar van and what mileage is reasonable? Thx....complete newbie!
@myBIGtinyhouselife
@myBIGtinyhouselife 2 жыл бұрын
I can't answer that because it all depends on where you are located and the availability. The cost of used cargo vans has skyrocketed since the pandemic started. Lots of people have turned to van life to travel since air travel is uncertain. I spent over $20K Canadian on mine but a smaller van, different manufacturer, different mileage or year etc. could be more or less.

@@dianegoss7181 Good advice. Many van dwellers use marine products. Think they get products & free advice if you’re fortunate from owner/manager of a marine store. But you did well, Adelina, and it looks better already.
