🐛 How to get rid of Mealybugs on plants (detailed guide) - mycityplants.com/plant-care/how-to-get-rid-of-mealybugs *** Before treating your plant, try to spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation. Do not spray just alcohol-diluted in water. Switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal or none of the new signs are present. It is best to use just Neem Oil as the treatment for sensitive plants. Once a week - Wipe off visible bugs with 2-3 drops of dish soap diluted in 20oz water and LIGHTLY spray leaves, stems, and soil with Neem Oil. *** I would also recommend using Neem Oil for all your plants as a preventative measure during Spring-Summer or when you have a sick plant at home. Spray lightly once every 2-3 weeks.

I just wanted to give my thanks, my hibiscus plants that my mom left me had an infestation. I didn't want to lose it since it was something my mom left me but over the counter stuff I could buy wasn't working. I ran across your video and lo and behold it worked! Took several days of treatment but I finally got rid of all the pests! My plant is looking pretty good right now, has had several flowers bloom on it already. So just wanted to give my thanks!

So glad I have found your channel! So informative, thank you! Our birds of paradise plant has a mild infestation on the leaves, but looking at the stems coming from the soil, they are hiding there in between the stems at/below the soil. I’m concerned they are further in the soil and on the roots. Is there anyway to get rid of them here?

Hi & Thank you for watching! 🌱 1. Remove the top 3-4 inches of soil and top up the pot with a fresh soil layer. 2. Spray all visible mealybugs + between the stems in crevices. 3. Repeat the treatment once a week. 4. Switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal. Spray Lightly (stems, leaves top and under + top soil) once every 7-10 days until the issue is solved and no new signs of pests are present. *** I would recommend using Neem Oil for all your plants as a preventative measure during Spring-Summer or when you have a sick plant at home. Hi there...I am a plant lover...live in a small one bedroom apt. but have 60 plants...Today, I decided to take my 3 huge Kafir Lily plants out to the balcony to give them a bath and clean the leaves....It is very very difficult to do each live indoors as the 3 plants are huge....Anyway, while I was doing that, I noticed a very very light infestation of what looked like mealy bug (I thought I would die) and I think I did every treatment available...I have lived here for 4 years and never had any issue with my plants so I am devastated. I have blooming hoyas (5 different ones) and 8 orchids,and pothos and fittonia, aglaonema...and many many more. I now am concerned that these will spread and it is just so difficult to watch everything....I found your site after I broke my back carrying these 50 pound plants back into the apartment and have noted your advice....I have subscribed to your site and hope to find many useful tidbits...Thank you..!! (wish me luck...I have had my Kafir lilies for years...as most of my plants, especially the hoyas...)...LG

I have a beautiful pothos that trails all along my stair railing. It’s maybe min. 20’. I have been fighting for it for almost 2 years. Cleaned all the leaves meticulously. Repotted it with new soil and pot. Check it daily. And they STILL come back. I clean the leaves at least once a week with alcohol. I’m very stubborn but it may be headed for the dumpster 😢 My heart hurts! I’ve just noticed that my china doll (about 5’) had gotten some mealy bugs also. It is in a different part of the house, so unless I mistakenly transferred some bugs…🧐 It sat right near a screened window, so I think that’s how I got them. I first was carefully wiping off the bugs with cotton balls and q-tips. Now I’m just flat out spraying the leaves with rubbing alcohol. It’s a joy to see those little cotton bugs turn yellow! Then, also going to stick this thing in the shower and spray it with my organic bug killer. 😵 It’s in quarantine and will remain there for a couple of weeks while I repeat this regime. I’m so tired of these innocent looking killers! I’m tired of fooling around and I’m pulling out the big guns!

Hi, wonderful video, thankyou. I actually have about 250 houseplants. I've been battling mealybugs off and on for quite some time. I don't have any plants with heavy infestation, however, I have several plants with them. I've started spraying the entire plant, soil, pot and surrounding area with 50/50 mix of water and 91% rubbing alcohol. It SEEMS to be working so far. Would it be even better to add a bit of Dawn to the mixture?

Hi Jen, Removing adults individually and then spraying the rest of the plant to kill invisible "eggs" is the most effective way. Treatment can be damaging if used for long periods of time. It is best to switch to Neem Oil as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal or none of the new signs are present. ***Before treating your plant, try to spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging fast and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation. Hi! Thank you for watching! This can indeed be a beneficial step, especially if you’re concerned about pests or eggs lurking in the soil. I suggest waiting until the plant shows signs of recovery from the initial treatment to minimize stress. Be sure to use fresh soil and inspect it before repotting. Green Cheers!

Hi Perlita, Thank you for watching! 🌱 Re-potting is the best approach. Make sure the get rid of all old soil before re-potting. If needed, wash the roots to clean them up well. Here is the soil I use for my plants: bit.ly/2SumKuf We ship it nationwide. If you are not in the US, look for a potting mix that offers a good porosity. After re-potting, use the Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 to prevent the issue. Spray it on the soil once every 2-3 weeks. Green Luck!

Hi Yujeong, - Before treating your plant, try to spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation. - Switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal. Spray Lightly once every 7-10 days until the issue is solved and no new signs of pests are present. - It is best to use just Neem Oil as the treatment for sensitive plants. Green Luck and Thank you for watching! 🌱🌱🌱

Hello. I love your channel and your accent! I have watched you for a long time now and have talked to you on occasion. I have a HUGE question for you. I have my very first infection of mealy bugs and they are on my red wandering jew. The plant is so old and soooo huge that I have chopped it at soil level, threw out the pot and dirt, and am treating it in isolation with alcohol solution (as you taught me) however, this plant hates water on the leaves so treating it with this could damage the plant. Also, I am concerned because it is so large and full (10 inch pot-3 foot vines) how can I be SURE I have killed all of them> Do you suggest using a systemic bug killer? I want to repot it as a giant propagation but as I said, I am worried about soaking the plant because each leaf has a crown and rots easily. HELP!!
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Megan, Wow! Sounds like you have a gorgeous plant! To minimize the damage that the solution with alcohol/dish soap can cause, it is best to use just Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as the spray treatment for sensitive plants. Once a week - Wipe off visible bugs (you can use q-tips) with rubbing alcohol or 2-3 drops of dish soap diluted in 20oz water, and then LIGHTLY spray leaves, stems, and soil with Neem Oil. Do it in the morning while the light is out so the moisture can evaporate faster. Keep the plant away from direct sun while treating it. Sun might burn wet/moist leaves. When you do not see any mealybugs on your Tradescantia you may stop the treatment. If you see one or 2 white spots, just remove with q-tip and alcohol. Check the plant once a week and if you see many mealybugs return, treat the plant again with Neem Oil. *** I would also recommend using Neem Oil for all your plants as a preventative measure during Spring-Summer (when bugs are the most active) or when you have a sick plant at home. Spray LIGHTLY once every 2-3 weeks. Green Luck! 🌱🌱🌱

Spider mites are next but gnats are on my list! 😃 Here are some tips for you: If your plant is heavily infested - re-pot in a fresh soil ASAP! *** Make sure to have them potted in a proper pot with drainage. Choose pot that 1-3 inches larger than existing one. Do not keep plants in nursery/plastic pots. Of course, our self-watering planters are the best!! 😄👍 You can browse through the collection here mycityplants.com/collections/planters We also have an amazing full of nutrients soil mycityplants.com/collections/indoor-potting-soil We ship pots, soil and accessories nationwide ✈️ Gnats breed and survive ONLY in constantly moist environment - make sure to allow the soil dry between watering. If the pot you have now has a drainage hole, water plants from the bottom - pour water in the saucer and let the plant drink it. This will keep the top soil dry. Dry soil - dead eggs ⚡️ If plant is not in a pot with drainage - repot it!!!!! Sooner - better. Green luck and look out for “Gnats” video 🌱

Hi Queen Hope you're having great times Is a spray having neem + citronella + castile oils ... safe to use indoors as well as outdoors?? Without a face mask?? Will it kill mealy bugs and work as pesticide and insecticide or what shall escape from its effect other than spidermites?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants Ай бұрын
Hi! A spray with neem oil, citronella oil, and castile soap is generally safe to use both indoors and outdoors. Here’s a breakdown of each component's safety: Neem Oil: Commonly used as a natural insecticide, neem oil is safe for most indoor and outdoor plants. It can also help control pests like aphids, mites, and scale insects. However, it's best to avoid using it near pets that may lick surfaces or plants, as ingesting large amounts can be harmful. Citronella Oil: Known for its insect-repelling properties, citronella oil is also safe for indoor and outdoor use. It has a strong scent, which can deter insects like mosquitoes. Ensure adequate ventilation indoors, as the scent can be overpowering in enclosed spaces. Castile Soap: As a mild, natural soap, castile oil is often used in DIY insecticidal sprays. It is safe for plants and can help the neem and citronella oils mix with water. Tips: - Test the spray on a small area of plants to ensure no leaf burn occurs, especially indoors where plants may be more sensitive. - Spray in a well-ventilated area indoors to avoid the strong citronella scent lingering. - Avoid spraying in extreme temperatures (above 85°F), as this can stress plants and reduce the effectiveness of neem oil. This combination can be a safe, eco-friendly option for pest control as long as you take precautions and use it sparingly indoors. Green Cheers!

@Mycityplants oh God! I feel so grateful to been responded to in such a kind manner Thanks queen. Can I use as preventive action or only for treatment? If so how regular? If i am testing, how long should wait to see negative effect burn on leaf? Does the spray work for mealy bugs and or white flies too?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants Ай бұрын
- Preventive Action vs. Treatment: You can use the spray both as a preventive measure and for treatment. For prevention, it's typically recommended to apply it every 2 weeks, especially if you notice pests in the area. For treatment, you can apply it once a week until the pest problem is under control. - Testing for Leaf Burn: If you're testing the spray, wait about 24 to 48 hours after application to see if any negative effects, such as leaf burn, occur. It’s best to start with a small, inconspicuous area of the plant. - Effectiveness Against Pests: This spray can be effective against mealybugs and whiteflies. Neem oil is particularly known for its ability to disrupt the life cycles of these pests, while citronella helps repel them.

Once the infestation is under control, switch to the Neem Oil amzn.to/2un4fcz This oil will help to eliminate the infestation leftovers (if any) + is an excellent repellent. P.S. Using the treatment solution mix for too long might burn leaves. If you see any sign of leaf burn, stop and switch to Neem Oil. Hi! Propagating ZZ plants takes time. Not a fast process so be patient. There are a few ways to propagate ZZ plants: Dividing, Stem and Leaf propagation (water or soil) methods. DIVISION - instant result STEM propagation - FASTER 1-2 month or so LEAF propagation - LONGER 3-4 months DIVIDING Each rhizome (bulb) is a separate plant. You can take your plant apart and pot separated peaces in different pots or group a few together in one pot. Ok to cut roots (no ore than 20%) if needed so the stems fit well in its new pot + provide more room for roots to continue growing. STEM & LEAF propagation You can propagate stems or leaves in soil or water. I prefer to propagate ZZ plants in water. Water propagation allows me to see what is going on + I feel this method is a bit faster. When propagating in water, change water frequently, at least once a week. *** If the water gets cloudy, wash the container with dish soap before filing it up with fresh water. For faster results, place cuttings in a Bright Indirect light. Direct long sunlight exposure is not recommended unless you place them by the East facing window where the morning sun is very gentle. Stem Cuttings Cut off a stalk at the base of your plant, making a straight cut with a sharp and sanitized knife/scissors. Place the cutting in water. When the cutting has grown 1-2" of new roots, you may pot it in soil! Leaf Cuttings Cut off a leaf as close to the main stem as possible, taking a little bit of the leaf's stem with it. Place the leaf’s stem in water. When leaves have grown 1-2" of new roots, you may pot it in soil! Green Luck & Thank you for watching 🌱

I had something more to ask... I have called for sphagnum moss ... And I fear it might have some predators... I am new to handling plants relatively... Could you please tell how to check miss for things like stink bugs or others and how to kill or prevent their being? Would be thankful Also neem oil should be used concentrared after mealy bugs are gone? Or I dilute 5 ml in 1 litre of water?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 6 ай бұрын
Hi! To check sphagnum moss for pests and issues like bugs, pests, mold, or other problems, start by visually inspecting the moss for any signs of pests or abnormalities. Look for unusual spots, discoloration, or visible pests crawling on the surface. If you notice any signs of pests or mold, you can treat the moss with natural remedies like Neem oil or insecticidal soap to kill pests and prevent their return. Also, submerging it in water can be a useful method to eliminate pests and remove debris. You can soak sphagnum moss in water for about 15-30 minutes. However, be cautious not to over-soak it, as sphagnum moss can break down if left submerged for too long. After soaking, gently shake the moss to remove excess water and allow it to air dry before use. This method can help suffocate and drown pests while also cleaning the moss. Ensure proper ventilation and moisture levels to discourage mold growth. Regularly inspecting and maintaining your moss will help keep it healthy and pest-free. *** Neem oil concentrate has to be diluted always. Just follow the instructions on the label :) Green Cheers!

Hi, Mr. Mehrab, When used properly and/or mixed with water, it is safe to use. One should stop using alcohol as soon as the issue is under control or eliminated. Neem Oil amzn.to/2un4fcz can me used for very light infestations or as the preventative measure. Green Luck and thank you for watching!

Can you use this treatment on a Prayer Plant without damaging it?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan, Before treating your plant, try to spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young, sensitive, or already damaged badly by the infestation. Switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal. Spray Lightly once every 7-10 days until the issue is solved and no new signs of pests are present. *** It is best to use just Neem Oil as the treatment for sensitive plants. Once a week - Wipe off visible bugs with 1-2 drops of dish soap diluted in 20oz water and after LIGHTLY spray leaves, stems, and soil with Neem Oil. *** I would also recommend using Neem Oil for all your plants as a preventative measure during Spring-Summer or when you have a sick plant at home. Spray lightly once every 2-3 weeks. Green Luck! Thank you for watching 🌱🌱🌱

Thanks for the video. Do you have recommendations for treating mealybugs in the roots? Is it possible to use the solution of water/alcohol/soap in place of some of the water, when watering the plant? Or should the plant be removed and soaked?
@Mycityplants

Hi Soen, Thank you for watching! 🌱 I have never had to treat mealybugs root infestation. Removing, cleaning roots and soaking seems to be the way to go. *** If the infestation is severe, consider to discard the plant. Hi. I wonder if you can help me figure out why my aglaonema is drooping. It had only a few mealy bugs so I divided the stems, repotted in different pots, sprayed with a neem oil and soapy water mix, then rinsed it off. The following day all of the plants were severely drooping over as if they were dying. I hate to toss them out, but don't know what to do. What would you do?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nadine, Thank you for watching! 🌱 It sounds that your plant might be in shock after its roots got separated for re-potting. If this is the case, make sure it was watered well after re-potting + the pot should have drainage (of course):) As long as the roots are healthy and the watering frequency is established properly, the plant should recover. Check the plant's leaves (top and under) once or twice a week. Since you have a very small mealybug issue, just wash the bugs off the leaves (if you see white spots) with a paper towel or cotton ball soaked in "water (20oz) + mild dish soap (few drops. Dawn soap is good)" solution. Spray Neem Oil LIGHTLY once every 2 weeks to prevent the spread and keep bugs away. Do not wash Neem Oil off. Green Luck!

So I have 83 plants and found these on one of my biggest today. I want to treat them all and just get rid of the things. I'm thinking of filling a bucket with rubbing alcohol and soap and dipping my plants in. (I would unfortunately be uprooting them and replanting them because they need new pots anyway and I have a recent gnat problem as well.) Do you think this would work?

Hi Alvaro, - Clean the space where your plants were growing (walls, floor, windows, air vents, etc.) - Wash all the pots well with dish soap before re-using. - I would wait for a month or so before bringing new plants in. *** I would also recommend using the Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 for all your plants as a preventative measure (great repellent) during Spring-Summer or when you have a sick plant at home. Spray LIGHTLY leaves (top and under), stems and topsoil once every 2-3 weeks. Green Cheers & Thank you for watching! 🌱🌱🌱

what about treating the roots for mealybugs?
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ama, It is best to replace the top 2-3 inches of soil when dealing with this issue. Before treating the roots, take the plant out and see of there is any issue there. If not, treating the plant and replacing the topsoil should be enough. Green Luck, and thank you for watching 🌱

Hi Arunika, Yeah, fighting bugs can be very stressful. Just stay consistent and check plants often. I have an infected pothos that heavily infected under were the leaves attach to the stems it’s about 7 feet long, is there any way I can get rid them on such a big plant
@Mycityplants
@Mycityplants 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Isabella, Pothos are known for attracting mealybugs. Heavy infestation is very hard to treat successfully. Infested plant also puts other plants in danger of being infested :( Sometime we just have to let go of a very sick plant and start fresh! If you are not ready to part with your Pothos, cut it back and repot in a new fresh potting mix (these bugs, most likely, have occupied the soil of your plant at this point as well). ***Make sure to wash the pot well with dish soap and alcohol before potting. Remove all visible adults individually with cotton balls dipped in alcohol, and then spray the solution lightly the rest of the plant + topsoil to kill invisible "eggs". Repeat once a week. Keep in mind that the treatment can be damaging if used for long periods of time. It is best to switch to Neem Oil amzn.to/3b7SZb1 as soon as the infestation is under control and minimal or none of the new signs are present. ***Before treating your plant, try to spray the solution only on a few leaves, as for some, it can be damaging and burn leaves if they are young or already damaged badly by the infestation. *** I would also recommend using Neem Oil for all your plants when you have a sick plant at home and during Spring-Summer as a preventative measure.
