@Lissbirds Hello, thank you for your comment. Even though John Paul was born in humble locations, it is a beautiful area.

First death - John Paul viciously flogged one of his sailors, leading to accusations that his discipline was "unnecessarily cruel." The sailor died. This is the second death - Leaving Scotland, John Paul commanded a London-registered vessel, a West Indiaman mounting 22 guns, named the Betsy, for about 18 months, engaging in commercial speculation in Tobago. This came to an end, however, when John killed a member of his crew, a mutineer, Blackton, with a sword in a dispute over wages.

In Britain not many people actually know who he is. Interesting that in a time when the Royal Navy was known for its cruelty, he was one of the few officers who had to face charges after having one of his men beaten to death. It's curious who we choose as heroes.

The flogging he meted out was in line with the disciplinary standards of the time. Wooden ships and iron men. The sailor probably died from infection, which is unfortunate. The mutineer, if he truly was, was subject to summary execution under established RN regs of the time. Now if JPJ just suddenly ran him through because he dissed him, that would be different. The dissing would be subject to flogging and similar punishments. In those days the CO was half a step below God, and his word was law. It is possible that the high command leaned on JPJ because they didn't like Scots, and that is the main reason he left the RN. That seems pretty likely. Anyway, a great man who is not well enough known today.

Very interesting. Ive always thought of Jones as a great patriot and mariner. I thought he killed a crewman in self defense. Please tell me more about this other murder..

@john nyman -- the first "murder" was likely death from infection. The guy's name was Mungo Maxwell, and his father was somewhat connected, so there was some furor over his death. The second guy was the mutineer who backed JPJ up to an open hatch. JPJ said the man was thrice my size", so in self-defense he stabbed the guy with his sword rather than get pushed backwards into an open hatch. A friend of JPJ told him that the British admiralty may let one death go, but 2? You have a problem. You gotta get outta Dodge. At the time the American colonies were a big area with a lot of places to disappear. JPJ -- whose name at the time and birth name was John Paul -- asked what's the most common name there? The guy said Jones, so JP became JPJ.

JPJ headed for the colonies and stayed for a while with his brother William in Fredericksburg, VA. But to this day there are sections of about 2 years where his whereabouts are unknown.

ohno2112 is correct. Commodore John Barry is the Father of the American Navy. John Paul Jones was a bold, brilliant, brave and heroic fighting Naval officer and is known in popular opinion to be more swashbuckling than Commodore Barry, but not only does Barry have the fighting record to match Jones' (Barry also fought as a Continental Marine for Geo. Washington at the Battle of Trenton), but Barry was the man who fought and convinced the Continental Congress to have a Navy, and outfitted the first ships. Though Jones bravely and expertly commanded several ships (as did Barry), and beat the British Navy in a number of spectacular engagements (as did Barry), but unlike Barry, Jones was not in a position to build the Navy, which Barry was and did, not because he was commissioned to do so, but because he saw the need to do so and did it. Additionally, after the Revolution, Jones left the U.S. to fight for the Russian Navy. Barry continued to lead, advocate and fight for, the U.S. Navy. The Navy came into being because of Barry's efforts. That defines fatherhood, and that is why Barry is the "father of the Navy", not Jones.

Jones was from Scotland and was not respected in the colonies because he lacked class. He was not privileged to gain the rank as Barry had. Favoritism seemed to be a big part on Barry's success. They both and John Adams wear the title of "Father of the Navy". The Navy was disbanded after the Revolutionary War. Jones had been arguing to keep a Navy going in which he wanted sailors educated in war tactics. It fell on deaf ears. Barry's position with persistence more then likely assisted him in succeeding in creating a Navy. Jones requested permission to go to Russia, Jefferson granted it, and only did so if he were allowed to maintain his citizenship to the US. He appreciated the US because it was being built as a place for men to be able to make themselves despite the class they were born to. It seems the hierarchy to include Barry didn't want JPJ around. I wonder why Barry didn't offer to work with Jones if they were both fighting for the same things for this country?
