Ugh, than you. I've recently started roasting my own beans and now have to change my grind settings drastically. I was buying locally roasted beans before, but the settings I had for them made my home roasted beans WAY too fine. I had no idea one bean would grind so vastly different from another!

OMG thank you so much! It was driving me crazy that I couldn't pull a decent shot because of low pressure. Changed the burr from 6 to 3/2, and voila, just like magic it's back to it's former glory 🎉🎉

I discovered that if you turn the external dial to the coarsest setting (30), the upper burr is easier to remove. At the coarsest setting, the conical burr is furthest away from the stationary upper burr, hence making it easier to turn.

Thanks it worked like you explained. I initially COULD NOT release the burr. Luckily I have an air compressor and so I took it to the garage blew it out and it was then very easy to release. If you have any coffee in the top and it won't release, DON'T FORCE IT. Clean it out well and it will work better once you finish that.

Similarly, I got my upper burr out but could not get it back in after adjustment - felt I was going to snap my fingers off. A quick vacuum in and around the grinder, using the brush to get into the grooves soon fixed this and it was easier to twist back into place.

Apparently changing the external grind setting to its coarsest option can make it a little easier to remove the burr.

I bought an older BBE used and i can't seem to get a fine enough grind! I did some sleuthing and found a single reddit comment that mentioned that the new model's adjustable upper burr assembly fits the old model, so I just ordered a new assembly and hopefully my new-to-me machine will grind a lot better! The only concern I have now is if I keep adjusting grinder down. I'm at 4 from 6. What happens if this keeps needing to be dialed down until i cant go any further. Forgot to explain about removing the bean that will be on the top of the burr grinder. Will never get the unit assembled if you don't run the unit empty before disassembly.

Great video instruction! I just followed the video and then realized, I did NOT have my "grind adjustment" number at any default number setting? I think I had the slide reel on "2" originally and then adjusted the burr grinder unit by 3 settings, to the finer (counter-clockwise). Clean your grinder before you do this! It doesn't need to be perfect at all, but you will have a much, much easier time when locking and unlocking the top burr!

I've just purchased a breville barista express. I've tried grind setting of 8 5 and 3 and the longest shot I was able to pour was 12 seconds to get 36g of espresso. I'm vibrating from all the espresso I've had. I gotta grind setting 1then most likely play with the micro adjustments. I'll update once I get it right. Thanks for the helpful video

Just adjusted mine after a full year of 2-3x daily usage. Usage largely the same beans, so in a bit curious if these things wear down or what? I have a warrant throguh April 2024 through Best Buy, so definitely want repaired/replaced if it's simply wearing down.

Adjustments are normal. Can be simple things like the roast of the beans, even humidity in the air of your kitchen than changes the flow even at the same grind size

Great video! Could you comment on one thing though: can you see the internal adjustments as major or minor steps, e.g. you have external set to 3 and internal to 6, would that be finer than say an external 4 with a internal 1? You know what I mean?

I believe that each internal change effectively offsets the burrs by one full range. Ie/ An external 1 and internal 6 would be the same as and external 16 and internal 5.

I have a weird problem now. 1 on the display was still a bit too coarse. So I adjusted the inner top burr from 6 to 4. Now it seems, that the top burr sits too close to the bottom burr: my Grinder screams as the burrs grind on each other. Even with the upper burr set to the old “6”-setting again. Can’t go below 3-4 on the display, as the very loud metal scratching begins. Is my grinder faulty?

Yes. It took me a couple of days to arrive here. I had to set my burr down to 2 in order to get enough pressure with fresh beans from a local coffee shop. Clearly, there's a pretty wide variance from machine to machine.

Great video. I was able to remove it from the breville and cleaned it but when I placed it back it went in place but the lock red is not aligned with the grinder red arrow. The red dots are on the opposite side of where align and lock are. Does this mess with the grind?

@@SathishkumarJagadeesan Yes I got it aligned. To remove the bur just twist the plastic piece inside the hopper counterclockwise and remove it. Then hold the grinder by the handle and twist counterclockwise and it comes out. Clean really well inside with the provided brushes. Sometimes you may need to place the machine upside down and shake it to remove all the old grind. Sometimes it can be a little difficult to place the grinder back in place if there are left over beans that didn't grind well.

Every bean will absolutely require a new grind setting. That is what's known as "dialing in" the coffee

Completely comes down to taste, I can’t tell you what’s right for your coffee. Too sour, try running the shot longer or grinding finer. Too bitter, try running the shot shorter or grinding coarser

would be helpful to be reminded to clear the grinder of beans before adjusting. I had trouble getting the upper burr to reinsert and had to use tweezers to pull out all the visible coffee bean fragments before it would reinsert. Otherwise, the usual great instructions.

I've not long ago purchased a Breville barista pro and it came with the Baratza burrs which has six flutes on the lower. Many people say to, out the box, change upper to setting number 3. I did that and then worked out the lowest setting I could go to was grind size 15 before I could feel burrs just touching when I was turning the upper section by hand. Shots seem to be still too fast. When I had it on grind size 6, the shots tasted better and time was closer to 30sec. I was worried though that the burrs could be contacting a bit too much? I imagine when beans are going through that they would push the burrs apart slightly? Some older stock models of the Barista pro still have the five flute lower burr so might be totally different?
